To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

autienotnaughty · 14/02/2023 14:58

Wow thanks for raising awareness I'll be staying on contraception abit longer

TurtleTriplets · 14/02/2023 14:58

Good luck OP - I hope you get the result you want. I am 36 and would much rather the menopause than a pregnancy now. We are all different though!

Namechange12908 · 14/02/2023 15:07

One of my late relatives conceived naturally at 52, her DH was 65. They already had adult children and lots of grandchildren.

Child is now early 20's, both her parents have sadly passed, but she is close to her (much older) brothers and sisters and has lots of nieces and nephews who she calls her cousins.

I’m late 50’s and for my bad luck, I’m still ovulating and having periods.
I guess there’s always a chance I could get pregnant. What an awful thought. My mums aunt had a child at 55 but that was 54 years ago, but theses things do happen.

54 years ago those 'surprise late babies' were, in almost every case, actually their grandchildren.

anonymousproblem · 14/02/2023 15:11

Possible but not as high a chance. Most likely perimenopausal symptoms. Although my auntie did get pregnant at 49-she had twins. Total shock and really really threw her and my uncle. So it’s not totally impossible.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/02/2023 15:11

According to the bible Sarah, the wife of Abraham, was 90 years old when she gave birth.

And they don't tell lies in the bible. 🙄

Laiste · 14/02/2023 15:12

Have you got kids already OP?

What makes you 'feel' pregnant?

To be honest i'd be testing asap. The digital ones can be done very soon after conception.

I fell preg naturally at 45. (planned mind you)

Alconleigh · 14/02/2023 15:13

Unlikely but not impossible I guess. I am 46 and don't bother with contraception beyond withdrawal, but don't have sex that frequently and am happy with that level of risk for me. Other people wouldn't be, I realise. Only one way to find out.....

That is true. However in this case the child was a one and only. My mum remembers the aunty being pregnant and my Nan ( mums mum and the aunty in questions sister) thinking it was very scandalous, in a “ what will the neighbours think” sort of way! 🤣

Yes indeed. It's still very rare, nowadays it's mostly from assisted conception. It happening naturally is actually quite remote.
You can google all the details.

quietnightmare · 14/02/2023 15:17

Uh ohhhhh Hope all ok

NewNovember · 14/02/2023 15:17

Being 49 gives you twice as much protection against pregnancy as using a condom so I wouldn't worry too much.

Oh go away. We’re all thinking it 🙄😂

yes I agree with this about the 'surprise babies' actually being their grandchildren.
I know a woman now almost 70 years old who grew up thinking her grandmother was her mother. teenager daughter had got pregnant all was kept quiet and the parents passed the baby off as their own. she eventually found out many many years later that the woman she thought was mum was actually her gran and her older sister was actually her mother.
this must've happened lots back in those days due to the stigma of being an unmarried teenage mum.

moonlight1705 · 14/02/2023 15:20

My cousin had 3 children in her 30s thrn has met a new man. She now has two children with him, one born when she was 52 and one born when she was 53. She conceived naturally.

Mmmm all these miracle babies happening around 40 years ago. I was also propositioned with this when I was pregnant in the last decade so still happens. Don't think everyone was super-fertile and having babies at 47+ back then.

CustardySergeant · 14/02/2023 15:21

Why would you think you wouldn't get pregnant if you haven't been through the menopause? That's very basic knowledge surely.

I would imagine that it would have created a lot of interest, medically in those days. No doubt her case notes were of significant interest.

OhMyBleedingHeart · 14/02/2023 15:22

Lots of relatives on Mumsnet who just missed out on a Guinness world record it seems!

donttellmehesalive · 14/02/2023 15:23

My gran had my mum at 49. She's twenty odd years younger than her siblings.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/02/2023 15:23

My great grandmother got pregnant at 49, had the baby at 50.

You really weren't aware that you could still get pregnant if you haven't been through menopause?

(Or was that sarcastic?)

amonsteronthehill · 14/02/2023 15:25

It does happen.... 😬

skingraft · 14/02/2023 15:26

I think that naturally conceiving at 49 (and the pregnancy actually ‘sticking’ and leading to a baby) must be incredibly, incredibly rare but it does happen sometimes, I remember reading a Wikipedia page on oldest natural conceptions and some women were even older (don’t ask, I regularly fall into random wiki wormholes!)

If you look at the huge families like the radfords and that big American family, the ones who never use contraception and just let it happen if it happens, the final baby seems to come around age 44/45ish then no more.

ShiverOfSharks · 14/02/2023 15:27

Can you get pregnant? Very possibly.

Can you carry to term and have a live birth? Very, very unlikely. But I wouldn't actively court putting myself through a miscarriage, if I were you.
