In an apocalyptic scenario, would you survive long?

I wouldn't! At all. I cannot run fast or fight, I'd be a goner immediately the zombies or aliens or whatever descend. When I watch a movie of tv with this theme I can't ever keep up with the characters when they make a quick plan about who is going to do what where, and when they give each other silent hand signals eg going into a room they think is occupied I'm just like huh what do you mean? Grin

If you reckon you'd survive a good while if the shit hits the fan, what are your best survival skills? Are you good at going with the flow, being flexible, thinking quickly on the go?

Whenever I watch these types of movies I always worry about the minor practical inconveniences (rather than obvious things like food or fighting).

Are they brushing their teeth everyday? How bad do they smell? How often do they change their clothes? What if they get their period?

I need answers!!!

😂🤣

I think I’d be alright. They’re the walking dead, not the swimming dead so I’d just cruise out to an island with my family & their partners and we would live off the land and sea. Between us we have the skills to do most anything.

So, I’d be bee lining to steal a luxury yacht if the apocalypse happens.

No, apparently they float around in the water I’m afraid. And even if you steal that yacht and get to an island, eventually the tide is going to wash a few up, in the dead of night, when everyone is sleeping of course.

PoseyFlump · 14/02/2023 06:51

What are the rules on turning into a zombie? If you died moments before they bit you would you still turn into one or do you need to be alive when bit? (asking for a friend)

Oysterbabe · 14/02/2023 06:52

Whenever I watch a film of this theme I always think I'd rather die in the initial disaster than deal with all that stress and hassle.

not really a topic for casual entertainment given what millions are facing right now

Maybe some of us on this thread are chatting about zombie apocalypse's to distract from what we are facing right now?

CalpolDependant · 14/02/2023 06:57

I’d be good. I’m a bit of a loner and I reckon other people would only slow me down.

My two eldest would be zombies within hours. They’re feckless, lazy and unsure how to interact with the real world. Not entirely my fault, btw… They were lovely before puberty!
My husband would die trying to save them because he’s soft. Especially for the girl.

My youngest can’t walk yet so I’d take her, strapped to my chest. She’d likely be okay because she’d grow up in a world of hard knocks. Small chance her crying would get us both killed but it’s not a given because I’m a mean shot.

I’m not fit enough but this doesn’t worry me. I will get fitter, zombies are slow and my wit would save me.

Well, according to The Walking Dead, everyone is infected with the virus so when you die naturally you still get to turn into a zombie. I’m really far too old to know this.

GG1986 · 14/02/2023 06:57

Definitely not! I take daily medication and once it ran out it wouldn't be long before I was killed off, also have IBS so no doubt I would need a shit at the most inconvenient time! Unfit as well, can run for about 1 minute then I'm wheezing.

IHeartGeneHunt · 14/02/2023 07:04

Ooh this is my specialist subject! Survival in Apocalypse is one of the ways I get myself to sleep.
I can forage, make fires, know my mushrooms, know the good hidey holes around here, can siphon petrol, knit, sew, and have watched enough surgical videos on YouTube to give me a decent chance of performing the necessary field dressings in an emergency.

FindingMeno · 14/02/2023 07:12

I always fancied myself as a survivor but now I'm older and less fit and my survival skills, although extensive, are rusty, I would need a couple of years warning period to sort myself out.
Without that I'd be mediocre at best and would have to sacrifice myself so as not to jeopardise my dc's chances.

TrinnySmith · 14/02/2023 07:13

It depends wehther the rest of the population were largely wiped out or not. If it was every man for himself I'd last a while, DH has guns, live in the country, could stockpile food, burn wood for heat. If all the crminial element were still about then eventually they'd win as they are crueller and wanton. If you have a handful who will do anything for power (even over a devastated world) you probably don't have much chance unless you are one of them.

Happysalley · 14/02/2023 07:16

I live next door to a house full of junkies so experienced at dealing with zombies. I look mousey and quiet but I'm a good fighter and I know a guy who's into survival and hunting. We'd strut around like Daryl and Carol but hopefully with more shagging.

Changechangechanging · 14/02/2023 07:16

Ha! My children and I for years did car apocalypse - time in the car was spent discussing what we'd do. We have a whole plan and meet up place with strict time limits as to how long we wait for the rest....hope we never need it!

PortiasBiscuit · 14/02/2023 07:17

I’d stick with DH, he’d look after us.

PoseyFlump · 14/02/2023 07:19

when you die naturally you still get to turn into a zombie.

That's proper unfair.

TrinnySmith · 14/02/2023 07:19

I don't think we are far from chaos - I thought about trying to write a book called The Lights Went Out.
How long before chaos if the electricity substations were bombed. So no heating (pumps needed for radiators), cooking, phones eventually, lighting, no petrol pumped at petrol stations, so no vehicles, no delivery of food after a while, no security at supermarkets. I don't know how it works with 4G, 5G but I suspect electricity is needed in it's ability to work. Chaos!!

JustKeepSlimming · 14/02/2023 07:23

We'd have to ditch DH, because he'd inevitably get us killed by doing something stupid, and he has no useful survival skills anyway.

My friend's DH would be excellent, so I'd probably take the kids and team up with my friend and her family instead.

On my own I'd be ok at the survival aspect, but hopeless if I was attacked. I could probably live happily in an unknown corner of the woods for a fair while, and if I had books id be quite happy. But as soon as zombies came for me, I'd be a goner.

CantFindTheBeat · 14/02/2023 07:26

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 13/02/2023 23:47

I have a hunker down and wait for the worst to sort itself out plan. I'm fat, unfit and would be fucked if I lose my glasses, so I have bugger all chance in a run and kill scenario.

If everything was to go to plan then I would rock it, of course that wouldn't be likely but still it's kind of fun to think through.

I've mentally plotted how we'd fortify our home and adapt it to self sufficiency, where we'd get supplies and how they'd be stored and preserved, what livestock would be needed to keep us in food (rabbits are top on the list, they breed quick, give meat and furs, easy to care for and feed), what fruit and veg could be planted for short and long term crops, what would make good bartering supplies.......

Big fan of zombie/dystopian movies, TV shows and books so find myself thinking about it fairly often.

Yes - glasses!!

How would we even SEE in the apocalypse!!

Iwantabloodypizza · 14/02/2023 07:29

I’d like to think so.

But I’m fat and can’t run.

I’m also coeliac so looting for food would t be much fun while scouring the back of packets for ingredients that will make me vomit.

I also have a two year old who will not shut up for a second, so if we ever had to hide, we’d be done for in a second.

Jimboscott0115 · 14/02/2023 07:30

I'd do well initially and could look after the family I reckon but there's absolutely no way i'd make it until some form of civilisation returned, I'd die doing something stupid - a 'there's only 200 zombies between me and that abandoned beer delivery truck, I'll be back in a minute' type rash decision!

MavisFlump · 14/02/2023 07:42

Justmuddlingalong · 13/02/2023 23:40

I couldn't be arsed with it. Dealing with unapocalyptic life knackers me as it is. If the leccy still worked I'd just have a cuppa and accept my fate.

Me too!
I wouldn’t last 5 minutes, am a complete wimp 😀

Iwantabloodypizza · 14/02/2023 07:43

Just 'surviving' instead of 'living' would be so bloody miserable. And in a world with no rules and no law, I reckon feral humans would probably be scarier than the zombies, so no thanks!

Thats pretty much my life now living on the edge of a rough estate.

We had a power cut here a few months ago. The whole area. The local shop across the road from me was looted while the power was out and they tried to do Aldi too. It’s any excuse for them round here, the place would implode within the hour if anything serious happened.

Cherryblossoms85 · 14/02/2023 07:43

@AffIt I often think that too, but my DH is so morally upstanding I'm fairly sure he'd say "after you" to complete strangers so many times that our whole family would die within five minutes. It's actually, weirdly, something that really bugs me!

Thatsplentyjack · 14/02/2023 07:47

I think I would do quite well. I can be very quiet, and I have a lot of rage I would love to take out on a fee zombies 🤣 reality is my kids would get me killed in minutes coz they cant shut up or sit still, and tbh I wouldn't even try to survive through it. Who would want to? I've seen walking dead, who wants to live like that!

StarmanBobby · 14/02/2023 07:50

i’m very practical and resourceful, plus have young children so I’d give it a go… another one who’d be peeing all the time though!
