Do you clean your bins?!

Hamster1111 · 13/02/2023 20:58

Inspired by the outsourcing thread.

I've never, ever cleaned my outside bins. Nor do I ever intend to. Am I slovenly?

Yabu - my bins are sparkling
Yanbu - they're outside. Who cares

We have ours cleaned each week, it's £5 a month and the guy just follows the bin lorry around!

Tinkerbyebye · 13/02/2023 21:00

My general waste wheelie is cleaned monthly, even though everything is in bags it reeks in the summer

stayathomer · 13/02/2023 21:00

I only have when they’ve gotten horrendous because a bag split etc. Plus there’s six of us and multiple pets. looking at eg my mum’s/mils bins I don’t think people always need to

BakedTattie · 13/02/2023 21:00

We have a guy that cleans our bins, he follows the bin lorry and does it.

its great and only £3 a time.

no smelly bins here.

(disclaimer, we have dogs and cats so lots of picked up poo in the bin!)

Curiosity101 · 13/02/2023 21:00

YANBU - but we do have someone who comes and cleans our bins every fortnight. Totally unnecessary at this time of year, but we get maggots if it doesn't get done in summer 😬

Squirrelblanket · 13/02/2023 21:02

Never. Weird idea and a waste of money.

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 21:02

I have a wheelie bin cleaner. 3.75 every 4 weeks.
With rotten food and nappies even bagged ot stinks.
The recycling one i do maybe every 3m myself and a bottle of bleach

BiasedBinding · 13/02/2023 21:03

No. Food waste that we can’t compost goes in a caddy that we rinse out, but the big bins don’t have anything in them that can fester so they’re fine

BiasedBinding · 13/02/2023 21:03

What are you putting in a recycling bin that means it needs bleaching?

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 21:03

Fwiw mine started because inhad a rotten chicken. I 5x bagged it and it was height of summer. Omg the maggots. As was 1 day after bin been emptied. So 2 weeks of rotten chicken the smell was horrendous.
I signed up for the cleaner and I it was a 6m contract so i just carried on

Adrelaxzz · 13/02/2023 21:04

No life is short. I do not want to waste time cleaning an outside bin!

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 21:05

Coke beer cans often leave dribbles jist often generally gets dirty at the bottom.

picklemewalnuts · 13/02/2023 21:05

Never. We bag in the house, so why would you need to wash it? Ditto having an extra bag in the wheelie bin. Why would you.

8misskitty8 · 13/02/2023 21:05

Outside wheelie bin gets cleaned by a bin cleaning company every fortnight when bins get emptied. Leaves it clean and smelling fresh.
Can’t stand stinky bins.

Ffsmakeitstop · 13/02/2023 21:05

My DH puts massive Wheely bin bags in ours even though most things are already in a bin bag. They do sometimes need washing out in summer as we get maggots when it's really hot. Never needed to do that when we had weekly collections.

FourBoysAndAFeline · 13/02/2023 21:06

Yes because maggots.

Even when we are careful with the bins and swear they haven't spilt or leaked, and the lid is closed, once or twice every summer maggots happen.

Grim

Does it have to be bleach? Couldn’t you just hose it if it was a problem? (My recycling bin doesn’t seem to need washing)

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 21:06

We also dont have seperate food waste in our area. And LL won't allow compost bin. So food goes in bags in wheelie bin.

Our recycling is shite too. Not even allowed to put like fruit punnets in.
Only cans, card and plastic bottles

JaceLancs · 13/02/2023 21:07

Once or twice a year or in between if a black bag leaks

BlueAgaveDreams · 13/02/2023 21:07

Gosh who knew bin cleaning was big business 😂?
Apart from a box for glass we don't put bins out just the bags (rural collecting point) so nobody else sees them. Maybe I clean the insides twice a year? By clean I mean chuck water in overnight.

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 21:07

Probably could to he honest

PeekAtYou · 13/02/2023 21:07

I pay for a monthly clean because it gets gross. It's well worth paying the £6 so that it doesn't smell and become a maggot breeding ground in the summer.

jtaeapa · 13/02/2023 21:08

I only use very good quality thick well fitting bin liners. That way, neither my kitchen bin or outside bin ever get dirty.

Oblomov23 · 13/02/2023 21:08

Only once or twice a year, Dh cleans and bleaches it.

TheHateIsNotGood · 13/02/2023 21:08

Not regularly but I do clean all my bins from time to time. Moreso in summer. All bins get a bit manky if you never clean them, just as everything does if it's not part of a natural environment, including you and me.
