To get colleague a valentines gift?

YABU = don’t buy
YANBU = buy

The colleague who sits next to me is lovely. We talk all day at work, although we don’t socialise outside of work. Known her for 2 years.

She suffered a recent bereavement and has pretty much had to hold everything together whilst the rest of her family grieves. Her husband also died years ago, and she said today that she hasn’t celebrated Valentine’s Day since his passing.

AIBU unreasonable to get her a rose or a box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day tomorrow? We’re both women so it’s just to be a friendly gesture as she’s been through a lot. I don’t want her to think I’m being weird though.

Nice gesture, go for it. It's not only for people in love x

JustDanceAddict · 14/02/2023 11:14

Too weird! Bring a box of biccies to share.
When I was a teen my mum’s partner sent me a card - creepy AF - wanted to make me feel good but it just reminded me I didn’t have a boyf!! He was odd though…

Possibly the person who poster it on here is the author

Funny AF!

I wouldnt. She doesn't celebrate it for a reason.

But it is. It's Valentine's day. You can be nice on any day of the year. Why hijack a day of romantic love to send a work colleague a gift? It's weird.

drunkornot · 14/02/2023 22:36

UPDATE

I didn’t get her a gift or really acknowledge the day to her. However another (female) colleague ended up getting her a single rose so she ended up with the same gift! Great minds I suppose

Nah all of you convinced me not to do it, some of the responses were quite strongly against it. Pretty sure someone said I lacked empathy and would be weird?
