Just that really.
£100 for a machine which I need to buy the hot chocolate for.
Is it really that special?
My eldests birthday in a couple of weeks who likes hot chocolate and is hard to buy for, but would it be money well spent?
Views please 🤞🏻

I can't understand them. You can make an absolutely delicious hot chocolate with milk, cocoa powder, sugar and a microwave. It seems really unnecessary.

If you're using actual chocolate - whether the Hotel Chocolat sachets, or any other kind - then what it does much better than the microwave is get it all really well melted and blended together. I used to make 'proper' hot chocolate in the microwave sometimes and however much I took it out and stirred it, I'd always end up with little bits of chocolate lurking at the bottom. With the Velvetiser you just put in milk, chuck the chocolate in, and press a button.

I got mine for Christmas and I love it. Genuinely haven't been so excited about a present in years. And, erm, I'm definitely getting more calcium than I used to...

linelgreen · 12/02/2023 10:26

We are now on our fourth velvetiser not because of any faults but as each child went to uni they took the velvetiser with them!!!!

Chocolateonsticks · 12/02/2023 10:35

I got mine before it became really popular, as in had just been released but the year before suddenly everyone had one and it was far cheaper so there really is no excuse for the price being so high. That said it was the best thing I could have purchased for someone like me and my lifestyle so I probably would say I'd buy one now too. I love their daily coffees, always make lovely hot chocolates in it for my fortnightly book club if I'm hosting, make hot chocolates for my nephews and guests, after a long dog walk and they are just delicious. If you're after a cheaper alternative the Asda one is something by less sweet toothy sister in law went for after I got nephews into hot chocolate and its exactly the same!

SleepyRich · 12/02/2023 10:36

I'm not reading 5 pages of talk about a hot chocolate maker to check, but in case you don't know you can buy it for £70 with 2 cups.

And the following place sells extremely nice hot chocolate which I find better value than the hotel chocolate stuff.

I love mine and you can buy other chocolates for it. Best gift I’ve ever received

seven201 · 12/02/2023 10:40

I have one, wish I'd just bought a milk frother, I don't get the hype personally. You can Chuck any hot chocolate in it - I put normal Cadburys in it the other day. I put coffee granules in there before, that was nice too.

Binfluencer · 12/02/2023 08:28

We mostly use ours to make lattes! An expresso coffee made in our bean to cup grinder, added to milk from the velvetiser.

We're fancy 😄

We do this too and the kids use it for hot chocolate. It gets a lot of use in our house.

Smudge77 · 12/02/2023 10:51

Have one and yes use it regularly, makes mocha coffee chocolate, milk frothing, hot chocolate. I use Callebaut Belgium chocolate from Amazon, and it's great. Clean up is easy, just put warm water in and rest start button for 1 minute and it's clean.

Courgettecity · 12/02/2023 10:56

Used mine twice already today, again it was a gift and it's good for making the milk in a latte, and I buy none brand chocolate so not too expensive. Cleaning is easy as well

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/02/2023 11:01

My mum has the HC one. She raves about it and uses it every 2 or 3 days. My DCs gave her a packet of the choc sachets for Xmas.

Rainbowshit · 12/02/2023 11:12

I bought my DC one for Christmas a few years ago. They say it is one of their best ever Christmas presents. It gets used almost daily in winter.

Before I bought it we always ended up with milk over boiling all over the microwave and chocolate powder everywhere. That all ended when I bought the velvitiser.

It makes amazing hot chocolate, so much better than using the microwave.

It also ridiculously easy to clean. Just stick a bit of water in and it cleans itself.

Abraxan · 12/02/2023 11:24

Dd got one as a gift when she was about 16/17y, so about 3 and a bit years ago. It makes really lovely, consistently good hot chocolate. Been a good buy here. It's used regularly.
Was a lot cheaper the the coffee machine which I use far less.

TheTeenageYears · 12/02/2023 11:44

I don't have a velvetiser but I have owned milk frothers for years to make hot chocolate. I can say with absolute certainty that they are not all created equally and using exactly the same milk & chocolate in different milk frothers or in a cup in the microwave will result in drinks tasting very different.

TeenDivided · 12/02/2023 11:46

@imnottoofussed The Velvetiser doesn't froth, it velvetises - so smooth and silky not bubbly froth.

Headabovetheparakeet · 12/02/2023 11:47

If you sign up as a HC VIP, you can get it for £69 at the moment.

yoshiblue · 12/02/2023 11:51

I have a hot chocolate shaker, does a great job and was £25 I think.

Unless you are drinking hot chocolate constantly, I don't think it warrants an expensive machine.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2023 12:18

Not in our house. Stick water in, let it clean itself and then have to wash it under the tap with a sponge to get the smears off.

BeyondMyWits · 12/02/2023 12:49

We got one at Christmas time on the vip special offer £69 and use it all the time. It takes literally 2 unattended minutes.

So it goes on whilst I'm filling the dishwasher, then pour it out, put water and a drop of fairy liquid in, go drink it, return later when im clearing up something or other, pour out the soapy water, rinse with fresh water, wipe, done.

Ours seems hot enough... you can drink it straight away.

Smoky1107 · 12/02/2023 12:51

I've got a cheaper version from Amazon. I buy hotel chocolate sachets and I love it. It's a real treat and I don't share!

harrassedmumto3 · 12/02/2023 12:52

In my experience, people can't speak highly enough about the Velvetiser.
Definitely money well spent if you can get it on offer.

AngeloMysterioso · 12/02/2023 12:57

I’ve got the Aldi version. Does the job!

PuppyMonkey · 12/02/2023 13:00

My sister got one for Christmas and tried one - she used the HC hot chocolate sachet and tbh I wasn’t keen on the taste of it. Left a sort of nasty aftertaste or something, I’m not sure. I left half of it.

I like the hot choc my DP makes which involves real blocks of dark choc mixed with Green and Blacks. We have a frother thingy too - I’m afraid anything else just doesn’t match his.Grin

Georgieporgie29 · 12/02/2023 13:00

euff · 12/02/2023 09:43

@Georgieporgie29 it's Royal Chai, Kashmiri Pink Chai. We get it in a local Sri Lankan shop which also has stuff from Pakistani/ Indian brands etc. Tea for DH does not usually mean instant or tea bag but he is happy with this. He has a sweet tooth and has the sweetened version but I like the unsweetened. He will also chop a few pistachios and add to the top. I know some of the main supermarkets now have some chai's but we haven't tried any yet so can't recommend.

Ooh that looks lovely, thank you I shall look out for it

FavouriteSlippers · 12/02/2023 13:03

We have the cheap 25 quid asda one. Its been brilliant. Hot choc, lattes etc. Even do milkshake on the cold function.
Also just get standard powder in sainsburys etc

This! I read a thread on here a year ago about the velvetiser, I was humming and ha-ing about it for ages, and someone suggested this as a low-cost alternative. It's amazing - makes super smooth and velvety hot chocolate, you can use chocolate drops or hot chocolate powder, and is a fraction of the price.
