Just that really.
£100 for a machine which I need to buy the hot chocolate for.
Is it really that special?
My eldests birthday in a couple of weeks who likes hot chocolate and is hard to buy for, but would it be money well spent?
Views please 🤞🏻

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a machine that makes hot chocolate for someone who "likes hot chocolate." They'd have to really love it.

namechange143 · 12/02/2023 02:55

I've had a hot choc from a friend's house and it was delicious. One of the best I've had.

I've thought about getting one. The sachets aren't cheap, it really puts me off.

If you do look to get one, you can often find offers (if you sign up to their VIP thingy or you can get refurbished ones a fair bit cheaper).

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 12/02/2023 03:00

Aldi has one. I have no experience with them but I'd get that copper one, it's purdy!

Oops forgot the link.

I didn't pay full price I joined some club thing and got £30 off. DD loves it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/02/2023 03:15

I coveted after one for ever but got a milk frother/hot chocolate maker from Amazon. It needs to get the temperature high enough to melt the chocolate .
Not as flashy as the HC but the jug part can go in the dishwasher which the HC cannot ( and that put me off as I knew I would ignore it as I;d have to handwash)

Yes the sachets are £ but if you normally buy a hot drink outside they are ££ .

I use a dark grated chocolate and soya milk ( which is sweet anyway)

roseheartfly · 12/02/2023 03:17

I have it, bought it 2 years ago and use it most days. You don't need to buy the hotel chocolat for it.. can use normal chocolate powder and it's great for making frothy milk for coffee. I absolutely love it.

85sarah2005 · 12/02/2023 03:19

my colleague has one that she's brought in, it's no better than my super cheap milk frothy, you are just paying for the brand name. also the HC chocolate is nice, but not the nicest hot chocolate I've had.

SaltnPeppaPig · 12/02/2023 04:09

It's really lovely. Got it as a gift and not sure I would have spent that much myself but I guess that's the point of gifts!

donttellmehesalive · 12/02/2023 05:19

I have one and use it most days. I've had a number of milk frothers over the years but this is a lot better. Very pretty, easy to use/clean and makes perfect hot chocolate in terms of temperature and consistency. You don't have to use their sachets - can use any hot chocolate powder, or I have melted pieces of aero or other chocolate bars.

euff · 12/02/2023 05:24

Another one gifted it here. Wouldn't have bought it myself but it does get enough use here. DS loves their hot choc but we only allow a max of one a week as a treat as their hot choc is rich and expensive. DH has a chai drink from elsewhere which comes out very nice and he prefers that to heating it on the job or in the microwave. I have ordinary hot choc powder in it. DD prefers ordinary hot choc powder drinks with milk nuked in microwave.

Pleiades2020 · 12/02/2023 05:27

You can join their VIP.ME membership (free to join) and get it for about £70. I got mine from ebay for about £55 (but obviously if doing that be careful about who you're buying from, etc.). They do make lovely hot chocolate though.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2023 05:32

I love mine but there’s been a few threads about them on MN with lots of people saying they aren’t any better than this that and the other.

You don’t have to use turn expensive HC sachets it works with ordinary hot chocolate powder.
Some people say it’s not hot enough but it’s the perfect temperature IMO.

plumduck · 12/02/2023 05:41

Some people spend a lot on those nespresso machines. So it's dependent on your values

Polgara2 · 12/02/2023 07:17

I love mine and use it daily. Best hot chocolate I've had. Don't use Hotel Chocolat sachets all the time though just ordinary hot chocolate. Whatever takes your fancy.
I got mine with a £20 off voucher but dd2 got a refurbished one from the hotel chocolat shop for £45 i think

Akite · 12/02/2023 07:25

We have a hot chocolate maker from Amazon which was half the price and it's brilliant and used all the time. Wouldn't have paid for the HC one. Ours can do enough for 3 drinks at once, I didn't want a piddly little one. And the jug can go in the dishwasher.
its a bit like this one : Amazon milk frother

KangarooKenny · 12/02/2023 07:26

My DD loves hers, we buy her the sachets for birthday/Xmas.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 12/02/2023 07:40

I dithered for a couple of years and then got one at Christmas. Dd says it was the best present. Got ours from a Hotel Chocolat outlet shop so it was a refurbished model at £60. The sachets are cheaper too at the outlets. It does use normal powdered hot chocolate too though.

I would buy another if it broke, it is so easy to use and clean, much less trouble than using a microwave and it's all frothy. Worth £60 but I 'd still be dithering at £100.

plumduck · 12/02/2023 07:42

Can it go in a dishwasher?

Paturday · 12/02/2023 07:43

I have one when I go to my friend’s house. It’s just a hot chocolate. Similar to Starbucks I’d say. I wouldn’t buy one, especially not for a kid.

Led9519 · 12/02/2023 07:45

An aerolatte milk frother does the same thing and is about £8 and can be used in a normal cup of hot chocolate. Get that.

Unbridezilla · 12/02/2023 07:46

plumduck · 12/02/2023 07:42

Can it go in a dishwasher?

No, as the electrical connection is integrated in the main body (like a kettle). It's really easy to clean though

We love ours, although got it years ago when cheaper. We grate a mini aldi 80% bar in for max choc at min price. My dad buys the mint sachets and for him, the taste is good enough to be worth it. Plus they have outlets where you can stock up for cheaper.

Lilyhatesjaz · 12/02/2023 07:47

My DD thought she might like one so we got some hot chocolate from the cafe to try.
DD decided it was over rated and saved her money.

DashboardConfessional · 12/02/2023 07:48

It can't and doesn't need to go in a dishwasher. You literally just rinse the frother mechanism under the tap and give the non-stick chamber a wipe.

I've had mine since Christmas 2018 and it's excellent. I use all sorts of different chocolates in it but my favourites are their coffee/chocolate sachets.

If you're buying someone one for a present though who doesn't have their own income, it is a bit stingy to only buy normal powdered chocolate for it. It's an ongoing investment.

Polgara2 · 12/02/2023 07:49

I have a milk frother which I also love but it really doesn't compare or do the same thing as the velvetiser.
