Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

@GoodChat well it's my money obviously as obviously dogs don't have money and you know that because...

We went to out favourite very dig friendly pub in the summer lots of dogs. Upstairs seating. Outdoors. Mother of child say to us oh he doesn't like dogs... child goes I dint like dogs. I said it's ok I don't like children but you can stay obviously joking. The mother really expected is to give a damn when she chose to come to a pub full of dogs. Entitled.

The solution is you keep your dog away from her child and she keeps her child away from your dog, surely?

All it needs is a bit of courtesy from everyone.

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/02/2023 15:39

Oops dog and don't

Rollin · 08/02/2023 15:41

'people tying themselves in knots comparing dog's paws and human hands and trying to argue that a dog is more hygienic.'

Dog's paws smell of popcorn when they sleep. Dogs win.

BabyTa · 08/02/2023 15:41

I think a pub or cafe is generally fine. A restaurant however is not, and I've left restaurants over this, especially when you are going out for a nice meal and the dog is large and in your face. I dislike dogs and think people have to understand & accept that they are not for everyone

Minimooncat · 08/02/2023 15:41

I agree they shouldn't be everywhere. Especially not places where people eat. I have a dog and he gets left at home.

Gnomesrule · 08/02/2023 15:44

Yeah dogs are grim, much rather eat off a table where a mum just changed her kids nappy or where the toddler was wiping its bodily fluids all over. 🙄

Sennelier1 · 08/02/2023 15:45

I like dogs and don't mind dogs coming along to the pub or a restaurant. I always ask the owner if it's o.k. to interact with the dog, maybe play a bit. But then I think a dog is still a dog, not a person, so may be given a bowl of water and a snack to chew, but not be fed of your own cutlery nor from a plate on the table . So yes I prefer dogs to stay on the floor, not putting their paws on the table or licking the bar. And I really prefer owners to be in control of their dogs, like when saying sit or stay the dog should do as told. F.y.i. I'm allergic to cats, not dogs.

DangerousAlchemy · 08/02/2023 15:46

I love dogs tbh (well behaved dogs on leads) & don't mind them in cafes etc if they are on the floor and not in the way. We went out for a family pub lunch on Sunday and there was one cockerpoo stretched across the carpet massively in the way. The waiting staff were stepping round it etc. Should have been tucked out of the way imo. The owner fed the dog some food off his plate at one point - but I'm not bothered about stuff like that. Can't stand dogs constantly barking though or running around off-lead. (Also hate noisy screaming kids running around).

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 15:46

Curtsey for one another is exactly what we need, which is why it should be dogs outside on the floor & humans inside. Simple really.

I see this comment a lot but I've never seen anyone change a baby's nappy on a table where food is served

Yes I am in Bath. The place is called Cassia - it advertuses itself as a 'co-working' cafe which in practice just means a lot of people are sitting around with laptops... i.e. just like every other cafe in town! But no kids allowed and the menu reflects that. It is very nice. Dogs are allowed, incidentally.

God, I wish there were more spaces like this!

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 15:51

GOODCHAT neither have I, it's just something the dog owners make up to excuse there disgusting dog behaviour!

1HappyTraveller · 08/02/2023 15:52

I love dogs but agree that those scenarios are unacceptable. You can’t expect everyone to be accepting of dogs and as you’ve highlighted it’s not fair on those with allergies either. Dogs should should be on the floor or a proper Igwe dog beds in these establishments and any mess cleaned up properly. Especially places serving food! One of our local dog-friendly cafes had to put a sign up asking people not to allow their dogs on the furniture. It’s grim.

Nanny0gg · 08/02/2023 15:53

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/02/2023 10:49

Honestly, none of those scenarios would bother me.

I love dogs and I'm happy for well-behaved ones in cafes and shops.

BUT - they stay off the furniture and they don't pee indoors!

How would that not bother you?

No what's simple is letting the owners decide the rules.

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 15:58

The owners are being forced into making these decisions to let dogs in because of the sheer volume of people who have a dog. The issue is then that the dog owners forget they are a dog & treat them ridiculously &!allow the disgusting behaviour that goes on & that people without dogs don't want to be around as described over & over on this post.

Like giving them a dog biscuit? Shock horror

YANBU but unfortunately businesses are happy to pander to mingers who love nothing better than wallowing in dog fur, dog slobber, piss and shit.

You think the dog mingers are bad? You met any horse mingers? Those girls are nasty. Some of us pick up horse white with our bare hands gasp!!

Noodles1234 · 08/02/2023 16:02

I grew up with Dogs, I just feel now a lot of people take on dogs that don’t have the time to properly bring them up. Many don’t mean I’ll to them and love them, but they work long hours then are out in the evenings and weekends. You have to put in a lot of hours with dogs. Plus the breeds people buy, some of them - WHY?!
…. neighbours wanting a quiet life and having to endure endless hours of barking at all hours as owners are out (again) / on holiday etc.

Yes, it bothers me. I avoid many parks as with small children it’s not pleasant to be around a fair few of them.

I would like a dog, but our lifestyle is not one for dog ownership, plus I’d rather wait until we had a detached house as I don’t feel it fair to subject people that never wanted a dog to have to listen to one.

not popular probably, but how I feel.

another dog hating thread, tedious.

No! That isn't what @Dogscanteatonions said! I love dogs, but I have a big problems with dogs being anywhere but on the floor in cafes or pubs. It isn't hygienic to have dogs sitting up to tables or bars.

sazzaz1980 · 08/02/2023 16:05

I agree with you! There’s just no need for it

DenmarkDen · 08/02/2023 16:07

I love dogs (I have quite a few black labradors) and am obviously not allergic to them. However, I would never dream of taking even one of them into a cafe or restaurant, let alone all of them! If I am shopping, they stay at home. When I had fewer dogs I would occasionally take them into the garden of a pub but never inside. My dogs are not allowed on the furniture at home or anywhere else. They are well trained and are very obedient. When my dogs were puppies, I made sure they were pretty much toilet trained before I took them out for any length of time. I always made sure to take them outside every 20 minutes and gave the command 'be clean'. When they urinated, which they did 99% of the time, they were praised. Now they urinate on command. I think the problem lies with the owners and/or handlers who can't be bothered to train their dogs properly or clean up after them when they have an accident. It isn't the dog's fault, it's theirs! So, in my opinion, you are definitely not being unreasonable!

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 16:08

Thisishalloweenthisishalloween · 08/02/2023 15:20

The problem is people don’t treat them like animals. They treat them like babies so having a dog on a sofa is nothing to some people.
someone brought their dog in to the doctors!!!!!

Maybe it was an assistance dog.

Read some of the comments. It's turned into a dog hate thread. As per. Look at some of the posters saying that the owners of places shouldn't allow dogs into their establishments... Just because 'they're disgusting'
