Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I'm sure I'm in the minority here; I love dogs, we had in the past considered getting one, but I do agree with the OP.

I'm not a fan of them in restaurants, not least due to hygiene reasons, but because a dog cocked it's leg up against my coat hanging on the back of a chair once in a restaurant... due to the type of coat, it was ruined!

Add in that one of my children is terrified of dogs after being pushed over and pinned down by one.

My kids are brilliantly behaved in restaurants, they have been taken to restaurants since they were tiny and know how to behave. Now if your kids can't behave in a restaurant, I honestly feel the same as I do about dogs!

I love dogs (I have quite a few black labradors) and am obviously not allergic to them. However, I would never dream of taking even one of them into a cafe or restaurant, let alone all of them! If I am shopping, they stay at home. When I had fewer dogs I would occasionally take them into the garden of a pub but never inside. My dogs are not allowed on the furniture at home or anywhere else. They are well trained and are very obedient. When my dogs were puppies, I made sure they were pretty much toilet trained before I took them out for any length of time. I always made sure to take them outside every 20 minutes and gave the command 'be clean'. When they urinated, which they did 99% of the time, they were praised. Now they urinate on command. I think the problem lies with the owners and/or handlers who can't be bothered to train their dogs properly or clean up after them when they have an accident. It isn't the dog's fault, it's theirs! So, in my opinion, you are definitely not being unreasonable!

Do you give them treats?

I see this comment a lot but I've never seen anyone change a baby's nappy on a table where food is served

I have many times. I’ve also seen and had to deal with people leaving dirty nappies on top of their empty plates.

memorial · 08/02/2023 16:12

There's plenty of places that dogs are not allowed (far far more than where they are). Just go to those.
Like the beach in the summer. There is literally one small beach that allows dog. Not even that nice. Yet full of people having picnics and suntanning who get pissed with dogs running around. Seriously go to All the other beaches where I can't go with my dog.

What a great dog owner you are.

I'm a pretty great dog owner.

pissingglitter · 08/02/2023 16:14

I’m not a fan of dogs in cafe’s or pubs unless they are guide dogs. I was having Sunday lunch at a pub and there was a dog off the lead running around jumping up at tables and then to top it off, cocked its leg and pissed up my coat hanging on the back of my chair! Dog owners didn’t bat an eyelid

FamBae · 08/02/2023 16:16

I have three dogs which we take out to pubs and cafes regularly, they sit quietly beside us or under the table , we usually sit near the door and would never allow them on furniture and God forbid if they peed we would alert staff so it was cleaned up properly. I guess some dog owners are alike to the parents of unruly children just lazy and don't give a fig. Don't tar us all with the same brush.

And any dog owner worth their salt would think that behaviour was completely unacceptable as well.

I don’t mind “proper dogs” (I.e non highly bred, Josef Menegle experiments) with nice old men, in pubs. That’s it.

I can't believe you take 3 dogs inside somewhere! Unbelievable

My dog is a 'proper' dog, but neither myself or DP are old men, so don't we pass?

Not really. If they allow dogs, they allow dogs. What's unbelievable is you thinking it's unbelievable.

We do. We are CAMRA members.

How was I tarring dog owners with the same brush? Am I not allowed to be upset that my cost was pissed on? If you refer to my original post I said I was not a fan. After that experience I now avoid anywhere where they allow dogs. My choice - just as it’s yours to take dogs to places where they allow them.

Sheera4 · 08/02/2023 16:32

As a dog lover and owner I fully agree that this is not acceptable. There should be a separate area for people without dogs and those with. Then there is a choice. Most dogs do not enjoy being in crowded places, these trips are for the owners benefit not the dogs.

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 11:00

Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.

I fully accept lots of places allow dogs now it's surely it's not unreasonable to be able to sit on a chair that hasn't had a dog in it

I'm allergic to cats and love dogs but have no allergies to dogs thank god. Have to say though, if it was a cat friendly environment I just wouldn't go there. I don't sit in my friends living room ( soft furnishings) or stay in her house for long because of her cats. I wash my hands before I leave so I don't inadvertently rub my eye and end up in eye casualty as I did once before. So I rarely am at her house and if so great caution is taken, sometimes strong antihistamines if necessary , but they make me very drowsy.

The dog hygiene thing, well humans are skanks too, but sadly can't wholly avoid them. 😘I agree though that dogs shouldn't be on the furniture and should be better behaved, but then so should children who can be equally noisy, disruptive and dirty but they have to be tolerated pretty much everywhere. 😆

Ps I am childless 😃

fitzwilliamdarcy · 08/02/2023 16:33

I do think it's weird how many people are simultaneously saying that nobody likes dogs being in cafes/shops/restaurants/pubs but that all of the cafes/shops/restaurants/pubs in their town are dog-friendly.

The owners aren't doing it out of kindness, it's because they make more money from dog owners than from people who hate dogs.

It's the exact same argument for pubs all allowing kids now. I don't like that - and it's bloody hard to find a pub that doesn't prioritise the family spend by allowing toddlers and young children to run riot - but I accept it because there are fewer people like me than their are families.

tldr if you don't like dogs in businesses then unfortunately that is a you problem. Please do feel free to open up a dog-free cafe/shop/restaurant/pub if you think that it'd make more money than the reverse (it won't).

Dogcafedreamer · 08/02/2023 16:11

Do you give them treats?

Yes I do, especially when training them. Once they have realised what I want them to do and consistently do it correctly, then the treats are phased out and just verbal praise and a touch to the head given. My dogs are very food driven (all labs are!) so luckily they are quite easy to train to a basic level. Slightly more problematic with advanced training as it takes much longer. If they misbehave, they are scolded, which they hate, but they are never physically punished. Oh, and every single evening at 9pm they are given either a pigs ear or a chicken foot. From 8.30 they sit and stare at us, very annoying :)

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 18:09

They also allow dogs in! There is no where to escape them!!

I'm glad someone got there before I did!

That's the point - there is no choice for people. It's weird how people seem to accept that nut allergies are an issue, but shrug their shoulders about allergies to animals. And yet it's much easier to keep a dog out of a cafe than nut products!

DenmarkDen · 08/02/2023 16:43

Thank you, how lovely of you to say so, but I think I'm just an ordinary dog lover.

MarvellousMonsters · 08/02/2023 16:46

I'm not allergic and I'm a dog owner, but I'd not expect to take my dog to any old place like that. Any business that's going to be 'dog friendly' needs to state it on the door so that allergic people can make a choice about going in or not. A dog friendly place would also, I assume, mean your dog is allowed on the chairs/sofa (but not the bar or table) and again, those with allergies can decide if they are willing to go in or not.
