Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Just because they allow them, does not mean it's fine to do the things I mentioned, I find dogs inside, feeding them etc disgusting.

And where have I said it's ok for anyone to let them do the things mentioned? It's up to me or whoever choses to give my dog a pork scratching. How the heck is that disgusting? I don't let him lick plates

Its disgusting dogs eating from your hand.

Why?

How so?

It says it all if I have to explain why its disgusting!

Weird comment. No it's not.

Madness this thread is. So the massive jar of dog treats that are normally in the bar area are just for show now are they?

It's not disgusting. Unless you feed dogs using your mouth?

It certainly says a lot about you that you’re unable to explain it.

OMG12 · 08/02/2023 14:45

I do wonder which places you are frequenting . I’d say most dogs just lie on the floor. Seen some dogs on sofas but always on blankets/coats.

we do to loads of dog friendly places.

what I would like to see banned in eateries is cooked fish - the smell makes me want to vomit. Even worse if someone on the next table is eating it whilst you eat your vegan meal - oh wait. I’m a reasonable human so don’t give a shit!

We used to put polos between our teeth and get our horses to take them.😊

GoodChat · 08/02/2023 14:49

@OMG12 and maggots under our tongues to warm them up when fishing - that's definitely more gross than dog or horse mouths Grin

Oh yeah - makes them wriggle more😂😂

YABU we need more dog friendly rather than dog tolerant places 🐶

You don't hand feed puppies? Why not?

Lolalaboucheridesagain · 08/02/2023 15:17

I totally agree with you. I love dogs. I own a beautiful dog. But I know that lots of people are allergic to, or afraid of dogs. So I only take my dog to the local ‘doggy pub’ (which has been dog friendly forever, and where the owners two dogs have free rein). Yesterday I was out for a meal with my husband in a non-doggy pub and two older ladies came in with two very smelly dogs, who proceeded to sit under our table whilst the ladies did nothing 🙄 Infuriating.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/02/2023 15:19

@vivainsomnia

Lord if you think your dog doesn't walk-in piss poo or lick his her genitals your seriously delusional.

Thisishalloweenthisishalloween · 08/02/2023 15:20

The problem is people don’t treat them like animals. They treat them like babies so having a dog on a sofa is nothing to some people.
someone brought their dog in to the doctors!!!!!

DangerousAlchemy · 08/02/2023 15:22

@RichardBarrister that's awful! I hope you went & told the dog's owner the reason you were having to leave early! Dogs should be on leads in pubs/cafes/restaurants and not allowed to bother other people!

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/02/2023 15:24

Is this still going on? Boring dog haters frothing. I take our dogs to pubs , restaurants and cafes that allow dogs.

Froth away all you want you moaning Minnie's. Our money is as good as yours to businesses ...dare I say better.

I have three grown up DC but I'd rather be in a cafe etc with dogs than screaming children.

Your dog's money isn't as good as the OP's.

VinterBjorn · 08/02/2023 15:25

I don't think dogs should be on furniture in a public place tbh, then again, I don't think kids should be standing on furniture in their shoes but that happens a lot more from what I've seen.

My dog regularly puts his front paws on the bar, I don't like it but bar staff want to say hello to him, it's not his fault that he's encouraged by the people working there, he's an unusual breed and very handsome and people friendly so as much as I discourage it, he'll do it despite being told off. He is however a very good pub dog.

The biggest problem is that people don't properly socialise their dogs. They think it means them saying hello to every dog they see when really it is being well behaved in a popular place.

Covid has really shone a light on bad dog behaviour is and how much dogs get away with it. People buying unsuitable dogs, not training them, over socialising them with other dogs and letting them do what they like, especially smaller breeds and bully types.

There's a reason that deaths by dog bites have risen so sharply and it isn't breed specific anymore.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/02/2023 15:25

I love dogs in these places. Makes me happy.

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 11:01

Dogs in cafes and pubs don't bother me, I do on occasion take my dog.

What DOES bother me though is when people take them to places like that and don't simply take a blanket to place on the floor and have them stay there.

I've seen 'influencers' with their small dogs on their laps, putting food on the table for the dog to eat directly from, even eating directly from the plate!

If you take a dog, keep it on the floor

Also, 'small dog privilege' shouldn't be a thing. No dogs allowed should mean no dogs (obviously not service dogs) - not 'pick up your dog and carry it around'

Small dog privilege is exactly what I call it. My dog is a big breed and as such I've put a lot of training in to him.

I take him pretty much everywhere with me, the Apple Store, school, pubs, anywhere that allows dogs, he's really well behaved and people love to come and stroke him and ask questions about him. As he's so big I'm super aware of those who may be frightened and ensure that we are respectful of their space.

On the flip side, I've seen small dogs behave appallingly and are always the first to start on my boy as he minds his own business under the table. It bothers me as my dog is more likely to get blamed if anything was to start from him being attacked by a small dog, which has happened and only thanks to people who saw it did the culprit get ejected and not us.

Cakeorchocolate · 08/02/2023 15:34

I'm not anti-dogs but not a dog lover either.

Had this recently where a dog was sitting on a chair in a pub/restaurant, paws on the table at times too. I was shocked none of the staff said anything to the family.
I think it's fair to draw a line at paws and fur on the furniture. I'd be pretty frustrated coming out of somewhere with fur on my clothing because inconsiderate people have allowed their pets on the furniture.

If I was allergic I would contact the venue(s) owners and politely inform them of this and ask that perhaps they could consider having a no animals on the furniture policy to help people like yourself be able to visit safely.

AlwaysGinPlease · 08/02/2023 15:37

@GoodChat well it's my money obviously as obviously dogs don't have money and you know that because...

We went to out favourite very dig friendly pub in the summer lots of dogs. Upstairs seating. Outdoors. Mother of child say to us oh he doesn't like dogs... child goes I dint like dogs. I said it's ok I don't like children but you can stay obviously joking. The mother really expected is to give a damn when she chose to come to a pub full of dogs. Entitled.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/02/2023 15:38

Worth noting that there’s evidence that dc brought up in households with pets like cats and dogs are generally healthier than those who don’t have them (in terms of catching bugs). So, they may be disgusting but…
