Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I still don’t want dogs on chairs and tables and lots of other people don’t either
I, I, I. The world doesn't revolve around what you want. All the reasons given have been challenged with facts. You can say that you don't like X, Y and Z, but that doesn't translate to your wants taking precedence over what is allowed.

I would never have allowed my kids to put their feet on seats or stand on a table. Or wee on the floor. Or leak on a seat. Higher standards I guess. Which is what the whole thread is about really
Neither did I but that doesn't mean it others don't. I would never impose my dog on someone with a phobia or who asked politely to do something different. If they don't want to ask, or respond contrary to how they feel, that's their issue.

What I hate is unjustified generalisations. All dogs this, all dogs that and them decide they are entitled to make rules for all just because it fits with their own personal principles. Imposing their views confusing what is right or wrong with what they believe is right or wrong. That's entitlement.

We all have to follow the rules and be respectful. I follow the rules and try to be respectful, but what I won't do is systematically do what one other person demands just because they strongly believe it's their right as defined by their own book.

What kind of crazy world do we live in where it’s acceptable for dogs to sit on tables and chairs in public eating spaces?

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/02/2023 13:33

My dog eats pop if he can get hold of it.

He walks in pavements covered in piss and other animals poo mud dirt general ground germs.

He licks his balls and penis and butt

He licks my cats butt

This is why he shouldn't be on public furniture

I only take him to places in summer where we can sit in the garden He is happier at home with his bed and his cat friends than bored in a cafe anyway.

I guess I assumed that not letting a dog sit/stand (or a toddler stand), on a table from which people eat, was a universal standard that didn’t need specifically defining. Clearly not.

Why can’t all dog/owners be like you. It’s easy to forget there are decent and respectful dog-owners after reading threads like this. No denial, no minimising, no deflection, no entitlement: just awareness and understanding from you. Thanks.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/02/2023 13:40

@ThisIsBrandNewInformation
Awe thanks.

I am a sane person that realises it's a dog not a child and therefore has different needs and rules.

And a child shouldn't be peeing on floors without parents cleaning up or standing on tables or running amok either and table should not be used as bloody changing tables HmmShock

Omg! I wish all dog owners thought like you do. Thank you.

DrManhattan · 08/02/2023 13:44

Totally gross. I couldn't eat in a cafe if there is dog hair, piss and shit. Horrible.

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 13:45

It's hilarious, people tying themselves in knots comparing dog's paws and human hands and trying to argue that a dog is more hygienic. But if that's what you want to believe to justify it I suppose...
The point us that you are either super hygienic focus or you're but if you are, consider all hygiene risks, not just those only associated with dogs.

In the end, we should all hold a minimum standard of hygiene. My dog does seat on one of the sofa at one cage, with the total approval of the owner (who come to give them a treat). It's leather like so easy to wipe and hair doesn't stick. My dog doesn't shed and is no less hygienic than a human being. Still I will always wipe the sofa afterwards. I wouldn't allow a Labrador though who are indeed more likely to roll in poo and shed a lot.

In the end though, it is our responsibility to look after ourselves so wash hands and surfaces around us especially if vulnerable. I'd love to hear about someone catching Toxocariasis or other germs from seating on a chair in a dog friendly place. It's not how these rare disease get caught.

That's absolutely fine, don't go to them.

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 13:52

Because it's a fact. Dogs do not transmit diseases to humans as humans do to themselves. That doesn't mean dogs should be allowed to go and lick anyone's face. It's just mean that using this as an argument to ban them in public places doesn't stand.

Thank goodness for decent dog owners like yourself. It's a shame more aren't like you

And back to this. I don't judge or berate people who don't like eating around dogs. That's their choice even if I don't understand it. I'm glad there are places where dogs are not allowed.

Just don't come to places where they are allowed and moan about them being there.

Why when we go to places that allows it. ONCE AGAIN, avoid these and go where you won't face this problem. We don't have to feel shame because we make different choices to that poster, who from what was posted seem to have a dog with habits others don't have.

So I aren't a decent owner because I take my well behaved dog to pubs that allow him in there?

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 14:01

Dog owners who let there dogs go inside places, sit on furniture, go near the tables, wander about & annoy others should be ashamed of themselves. I hate it when they feed dogs food of there plate too, it's disgusting.

I am not disgusting for letting my dog go into a dog friendly establishment.

Eh? Inside places that let them?? I don't do any of the other things, apart from share a chip or packet of crisps/pork scratchings. I have nothing to be ashamed about. Thanks.

DrManhattan · 08/02/2023 14:15

@Dogcafedreamer I don't obviously

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 14:17

Just because they allow them, does not mean it's fine to do the things I mentioned, I find dogs inside, feeding them etc disgusting.

What’s disgusting about giving a dog a bit of leftover meat? I quietly slip it under the table and she takes it from my hand. How does that affect anyone else? I’m not putting the plate down for her.

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 14:24

Its disgusting dogs eating from your hand.
