Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

@Sparklingbrook not that I'm aware of, I'd go if they did.

The point is, if you don't like something you don't do it?

What's the point in coming on here whinging about it? It doesn't achieve anything. It's pointless, it's not going to change the cafe.

The places that don't allow dogs far outweigh the places that do.

It's a non argument isn't it? If you don't like something then don't put up with it.

I think this thread proves that it's different from place to place. Since places opened up again after Covid it seems most of the places that didn't allow dogs around here suddenly did. So you'd go along and all of a sudden-dogs everywhere.

I went to one of those shopping outlet places and there were so many dogs, I was really surprised.

Dogcafedreamer · 08/02/2023 08:27

@AllThingsServeTheBeam does your dog get a round in? It seems a common theme that they don't! As PP said it's a bit rude Grin!

But we'll overlook that as they're our fur babies hey? Grin

This is AIBU. On MN. The home of whinging, it's where people come to have a moan. Grin

karmalama · 08/02/2023 08:28

I love dogs, have lots but it does seem to be getting a bit mad. Few weeks ago when it was chucking it down, was in a village bakery and someone came in with a huge doodle thing, it was drenched and dripping water all over the floor. Seemed very unhygienic and I have low standards !

Oh and insult others, because they have a different view?

Plenty of bane calling on this thread.

Pinkypie86 · 08/02/2023 08:31

@Sparklingbrook

I agree - with our dog ( sadly she was PTS last week ) we found that it definitely varies between regions. Coastal places allow more dogs also, quaint towns and villages seem to be more dog friendly. Our local city wouldn't be somewhere many dogs would venture.

Shopping outlet was always our girls favourite place - she loved the fusses. She was impeccably behaved though.

Someone did buy us a drink once because of him... Does that count? 🤣

I am a huge cat lover but really do not fancy a cat cafe, it just seems a bit wrong.

Cat cafes are pretty shit

That's really not the case in the touristy town I live in, the places that allow dogs vastly outweigh ones that don't. Plenty of other people on this thread have said this is the case where they live too.

She hasn’t asked for dogs to be banned. Just not on the furniture as it exacerbated her condition. That’s fair. But the earlier answer was “you’ve got a health problem? Then just go somewhere else and we’ll carry in as we are. We won’t make any adaptations to support you”.

@Tiredalwaystired

yes, I've read all the posts, thank you.

It is up to each business to set their own rules regarding dogs allowed/allowed on furniture/whatever.

the OP can ask a particular business owner to consider not allowing dogs on furniture, but she can't expect it to be made into something like disabled access.

businesses don't have to 'make allowances' for allergies. Where would it stop? No flowers inside? Vacuuming & wet mopping 4x per day? No fragrances at all? Only water for cleaning?

Why can't dog owners exercise common sense and not let their dogs on furniture regardless? I wouldn't have let my kids put their feet up on furniture in places like pubs and cafes so who do some dog owners think it's ok for dog feet to be up on furniture (and arse and mouth)

Well under the equalities act they kind of do. Also one vase of cut flowers is less likely to trigger hay fever that several dogs.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/02/2023 09:24

Animal allergy is quite common, between 10 and 20% of population.

Judijudi · 08/02/2023 09:25

on a train one day and person got on with dog and proceeded to let dog sit on the table! It was an hour journey and the dog was on the table for the entire journey! Absolutely disgusting.
Can’t stand dogs and have a lifelong fear of them

WFHbore2023 · 08/02/2023 09:26

The thread has gone off on a tangent, the OP hasn't said anything about dogs not being allowed in to places, other posters have said that.

The OP said

So, no OP, YANBU. That should 100% be the bare minimum expected when taking a pet in to a cafe or pub.

There's a huge difference between a dog being made to sit on a blanket under the table whilst it's owners are eating, and having a dog sat up at the table.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 09:36

Oh and insult others, because they have a different view?

Yep, that often happens.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 08/02/2023 09:40

I love the non dog people’s insults. Calling dogs “mutts” and “fur babies” and saying your house smells. 🤣 primary school style.

I agree. Uninvited. But when the landlord physically taps the seat to get your dog up there for a photo, what can you do 🤷🏼‍♀️

shiningstar2 · 08/02/2023 10:01

I am a dog lover but I would not be happy with dogs on cafe seats ext. When we walk our dog at the coast we are lucky that we have a couple of cafes that welcome us in with our dog. Hot coffee and a bacon sandwich with a sea view. Lovely. Our dog knows the routine. She happily curls up under the table and you would have to look very carefully to even see she was there. She is never fed at the table from us so has no expectation of titbits being fed to her in a cafe.
Basic good manners for dogs. I have only seen one owner take advantage and put her dog on one of the cafe seats. She was immediately and politely told not an option by the owner. The owner welcomes dog owners because it keeps her business going, especially during the winter when there are less people out walking in all weathers. Their is a sign on the door saying dry, well behaved dogs welcome at owners discretion. This is as it should be if, as a dog owner I am lucky enough to find a cafe/restaurant/hotel where the owner likes dogs and will welcome me in on a chilly day. I am sad when the odd irresponsible owner spoils it for the rest of us.

You could say no? You don't like your dog to get up on furniture where people are going to sit and suggest a photo elsewhere?
