Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I have a dog but agree with you 100%. It doesn't belong in a pub or a cafe.
It does if the owner of the pub or cafe says it does.

What it comes down to. I know plenty of people who don't think children should be in pubs either...

True that!

Hmmmm.....

I'm glad I'm one of those and not you, because I'd be really upset if I was that unpleasant.

Probably best you stay indoors and not visit cafes etc.

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

This. If you care this much just go somewhere that isn't dog-friendly.

I'm allergic to dogs as well, but people who have dogs need places to go.

🤣🤣 Christ and it's the dog lovers who are the nutters. Ok then

Suzi888 · 07/02/2023 16:41

It’s children I don’t care for (and I have a one, but time and place). I don’t expect to have to clean up a table before I sit down, interact with someone child etc.

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed on the furniture or to urinate etc of course that’s disgusting.

I agree with pp though, there is probably is trace amounts of human shit on bars, chairs etc.
I’ve seen people changing babies on the pub seat, letting children run over furniture with shoes on- obviously family friendly places but still…

I can be allergic to some dogs (despite owning one) I take an antihistamine if I’m likely to come in to contact with lots of dogs.

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 16:46

My dog is allowed on my sofa at home, because it's my choice. He doesn't shed, so I can deal with him being there. I wouldn't dream of letting him on furniture in a public place.

When we go to a dog friendly pub, or cafe, we take a backpack with a blanket and things to keep his mind busy whilst we are in there. The blanket is put on the floor, and he's encouraged to lie on it. We also make sure he's put at the point furthest away from walk ways etc.

I don't think there's anything entitled about the way I use dog friendly facilities.

I agree, it's inappropriate and gross for a dog to be given food directly off the table, or to sit at the table. I wouldn't do it at home, I wouldn't do it anywhere else.

It's not on to tar all owners with the same brush, I'm respectful of the other customers.

It's like me thinking all parents are entitled because I once went for coffee with someone who allowed her toddler to use the potty (for both!!!) whilst sat in actual Costa. Not the toilet, the actual cafe area. And then proceeded to walk the potty through to the toilet...

I don't even know why I'm astonished so many entitled dog owners think it's ok for dogs to be on furniture in public places or pee on the floor. It's absolutely no wonder people get fucked off with dogs.

I know it's the owners not the dogs - that's very evident here.

But not one person said that! Nobody! Dog owner or not. Are you reading the right thread? You are making stuff up. It's absolutely no wonder that people get fucked off with dog haters pretending that they are being reasonable.

Do you know why they “pander” to us? Because they make money out of us.

bigbluebus · 07/02/2023 17:03

DH and I were in a cafe one day. A couple at the table opposite us with 2 dogs were just getting up yo leave as we arrived. As they walked out, one of the dogs cocked it's leg and had a wee up the specials blackboard leaning against the wall and all down the wall next to it. The owners just walked out as if nothing had happened. We had to tell the woman behind the counter so she could clean it up.
I also hate seeing dogs on the furniture in public places. Dogs should be on the floor under the table - end of. And that's exactly where a service dog would be.

I'd rather a pissy furry dog that half of the humans in most places I go to

maybe you just need to go to some nicer places?

Actually, there is in my city. The closest cafe to me... no under 13s on week days. Bliss.

Are you in the UK?

Yes I am in Bath. The place is called Cassia - it advertuses itself as a 'co-working' cafe which in practice just means a lot of people are sitting around with laptops... i.e. just like every other cafe in town! But no kids allowed and the menu reflects that. It is very nice. Dogs are allowed, incidentally.

@Warrensrabbit

you sound soooooo entitled

just so long as you and your dog are ok eh?

The only pub in my town that doesn't allow dogs is whetherspoons and that is an absolute dive.

FluffyYucca · 07/02/2023 17:24

i have no issues with well-behaved dogs in cafes.

Problem is, a significant minority of the dogs in our local cafes don’t seem to be. They bark incessantly, or jump up at people, or fight with each other. And neither the dog owners nor the cafe staff do anything about it.

And there are literally no cafes in my local town or the surrounding ones that aren’t dog-friendly. I appreciate that dog owners want somewhere to go - but how about the rest of us?

Warrensrabbit · 07/02/2023 17:24

@LuckySantangelo35 how is it entitled when the manager actually invites you in? I was regularly ordering takeout so as not to go in- but the manager has actually taken the time to invite me in because they want and value my business.

kc431 · 07/02/2023 17:40

Aprilx · 07/02/2023 13:58

They really don’t. Mine never lick their arses or each others and definitely not other dogs.

I have never yet come across a town in the UK where nearly everywhere lets dogs in, I suspect you are exaggerating. You have also picked out three incidents which also are atypical. No dog owner wants their dog peeing inside or sitting on the furniture or climbing on the bar.

Come to my town - I genuinely haven’t come across an establishment that doesn’t allow dogs, apart from Spoons. They’re EVERYWHERE. I’m allergic and had a massive reaction in a charity shop, then some woman gave me dirty looks like I was diseased and muttered she didn’t want to catch something!

I wish they weren’t everywhere but I’d have to move towns. I live in a very yummy-mummy town where everyone seems to have dogs, but work in a more industrial town where I don’t think I’ve ever seen one…maybe I should move there.

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

But there aren't, that's the problem. Some hotels and B&Bs (the latter often because they have their own pets (could be cats!)) but not cafes/shops etc. People get incredibly aggressive if they can't take their "fur babies" into places with them, so nobody dares say no.

And it's totally wrong that someone with allergies should be in this position. Not just customers but staff. It's rubbish if you work somewhere and they decide to allow dogs and you've either got to leave or work with streaming eyes (or worse) every day.

Guide dogs are not a problem - there aren't that many of them and they do a job and stay out of your way. And they won't climb on the furniture.

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 17:56

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/02/2023 16:10

Who wants to sit in their nice clothes on a sofa or a chair where a dogs arse has been?!

I mean really

some people are proper grotty if they can’t see the problem with that

Very well said

XmasElf10 · 07/02/2023 18:00

Dog owner here. He is not allowed on cafe furniture and I’d be mortified if he peed in a cafe. He is properly house trained. I agree with you. Dogs in public places should be quiet, clean and on the floor!

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 16:59

Do you know why they “pander” to us? Because they make money out of us.

Yes but they could make money out of the rest of us too. There are very limited options for people who don't want to encounter dogs and so the OP is justified in her concern..
