Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

'the OP would hate me and my dog, we are welcome in a number of our local chain restaurants who actually don’t allow dogs!'

You see this is what I don't agree with, I have no issue with dogs being in dog friendly well signposted restaurants, but not in those that don't allow dogs.

the OP would hate me and my dog, we are welcome in a number of our local chain restaurants who actually don’t allow dogs! Picking up a takeaway with my dog the manager told me we were actually welcome in-I said that’s not what the website says and he told me that it was up to me but most in that particular town were happy with well behaved dogs as he gets a better spend per head!

Wow. The entitlement and lack of consideration is quite something.

There will be people who chose to visit that particular place due to the "No dogs" policy.

How inconsiderate to just ignore that.

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:02

Some of these posts remind me of the Spitting Image sketch where people where coming into a police station blaming all the crimes on rottweilers... when I was a kid it was Alsatians.
Now it seems all dog and owners are all the target for hysteria,...
Cockerpoos are the ones you really need to watch out for - look sweet but it'' nick your seat in the pub without a backward glance...

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 16:03

If I went to a no dogs allowed restaurant and there were dogs I wouldn't be going to that restaurant again. I like dogs, used to have one but don't want them there when I'm out eating a nice meal etc.

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 16:05

'Now it seems all dog and owners are all the target for hysteria,...'

Would you call the uproar about all of the recent dog attacks hysteria? The negligent owners of these dogs should get a suitable punishment, but as usual they barely get a slap on the wrist.

lurchermummy · 07/02/2023 16:09

I love dogs, have two of them but YANBU I wouldn't let them on the furniture in a cafe or pub. I generally don't take my two anywhere like that anyway as my little Jack Russell is too highly strung, he wouldn't cope. But even if he was calm it would be strictly floor only.

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:09

'Would you call the uproar about all of the recent dog attacks hysteria?'

Yes, I would as it happens. Given the number of attacks versus dog numbers in the UK it's clearly a tiny, tiny amount - awful though it is when someone is killed or badly injured it's rare.
And I do think consequences for owners who have illegal or out of control dogs should be harsh - having said that, if your the owner of a dog that's killed your child or grandchild then perhaps it could be argued that no punishment will EVER be worse than that.

But back to the actual discussion - dogs in cafes. Completely different.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/02/2023 16:09

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/02/2023 10:49

Honestly, none of those scenarios would bother me.

@MrsSkylerWhite

you wouldn’t be bothered by dog piss in a cafe??

you do you Hun

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/02/2023 16:10

Who wants to sit in their nice clothes on a sofa or a chair where a dogs arse has been?!

I mean really

some people are proper grotty if they can’t see the problem with that

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:11

I saw a toddler wee it'self all over a chair and floor in a cafe. World didn't end. Nor will it end if a new puppy has a similar accident on the floor of a pub.

To re-iterate - people are deliberately taking incontinent dogs ( or kids for that matter) to cafes or restaurants.

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:14

aren't taking...

Anyone who comes to my house sits on furniture where dogs and cats have been.

I'm not remotely 'grotty'. What a dickish comment

Clearly you didn't read the next comment as a follow up.

A suitable punishment might act as a deterrent, obviously nothing will ever make up for it but justice should be served. Yes back to the topic.

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:25

Some pub or cafe posting a dog pic on a chair or up at the bar is likely to have been staged for the post itself... we were in a big pub at the weekend. Middle of nowhere - full of dogs - it's near a beauty spot. Didn't see a single dog anywhere but on the floor, most under tables.
That's standard, IME, and I go to a lot of places with dogs there. I've yet to see one pee indoors or sit on 'people' furniture. Occasionally there'll be a puppy in someone's arms.

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

its just personal preference 🤷‍♀️

i would not want to sit on a chair where a dog had sat cos
a) there bare arse had been on it, dog don’t wipe their bums. Hygiene.
b) I don’t want dog hairs on my clothes

Rollin · 07/02/2023 16:27

You think there's a punishment in the world more effective than being responsible that the death of your own child? Or any child? Stiff fine maybe? Prison?
Or you think that anyone who's animal has killed someone would be likely to have the same thing happen twice because they didn't learn anything the first time around?

Twillow · 07/02/2023 16:28

I have a dog but agree with you 100%. It doesn't belong in a pub or a cafe.

Thing is... If you go out in public you have no idea if a dog has sat where you're sitting. And 'Hygiene'... I can guarantee there are more disgusting people than my dog.

It does if the owner of the pub or cafe says it does.

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 16:32

@rollin I don't understand your point. I said there should be a suitable as in harsh punishment in a way to go some way in deterring other shit owners. At it stands they get a slap on the wrist. Arr you saying murders should just get a slap on the wrist because no punishment is fit to make up for their crime. That goes without saying but it doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen

no I don’t know

but if I do know then I will avoid

and yeah you get some mucky people but as I say a dog is a dog! They can’t wipe their bums and can’t wear clothes to cover their bums.

Now lets get back to topic

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 16:33

Love a dog in a cafe, especially if it's my dog!

Photo in our local cafe, she loves it.
