Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Quveas come to the north west it's unfortunately dogtopia!

YANBU.

Dogs simply should not be in pubs and cafes.

Well that's not true is it. Simply, it's at the owners (of the premises) choice. Don't like it? Don't go. That's what's simple.

SharkVega · 07/02/2023 14:48

It would be a cold day in hell before I re-routed a dog walk to pick up a pint of milk on my way home

Who said anything about re-routing a dog walk? There just happens to be one between the woodland park we walk in and my house. If it wasn't allowed I wouldn't do it but it's convenient so I do and my dog loves getting fusses off the staff, she's already had her run round the fields. Wilkos have obviously decided it's a good business decision for them which I suspect is the case for all the cafes and pubs and shops that allow them.

I suppose what non-dog owners don't realise is that people with dogs consider them part of the family, and treat the accordingly.
Cats though, don't see the point of those at all...

Do you realise how daft you sound saying that and then finishing with the cats statement?'

It was a joke...

Ah well apologies. You never know on threads like these.

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 14:59

@Rollin I wasn't meaning in relation to the cafe sorry, just general public, out walking etc. Yes I realise I digressed, back to topic.

Cosyblankets · 07/02/2023 14:59

I don't know a single person in real life with an allergy so bad they can't be near where a dog has previously been. But this thread is full of them.

Same. Thank goodness there's medication.

I have 4 cats and if I visit my best friend I make her husband sneeze and his eyes go itchy if he doesn't take an antihistamine first. Fine if he does though. In fact he can visit my house if he takes his allergy medication before hand.

Not saying they don't exist or it doesn't happen but if you read this thread it's every other person with such an allergy!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 07/02/2023 15:13

I have a big hairy boy and I agree OP. Dogs should absolutely not be on furniture in pubs etc and they should not be peeing on floors or allowed to harass people.

Just Like a toddler thread about cafes etc it's a mixed view but this dog thing is going to far.

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 15:19

I don't even know why I'm astonished so many entitled dog owners think it's ok for dogs to be on furniture in public places or pee on the floor. It's absolutely no wonder people get fucked off with dogs.

I know it's the owners not the dogs - that's very evident here.

Oh no I get it. I don't know a single person allergic to dogs. I'm just saying even if they are, it can normally be treated with medication.

But if the landlord of the pub encourages it? How is that my fault?!

GoodChat · 07/02/2023 15:25

@AllThingsServeTheBeam the landlord of the pub won't encourage you to let your dog piss on the floor and not clean it up

@Tiredalwaystired

How difficult is it to understand that it's the pub/cafe/shop owners right to decide what works best for their business?

it's not a case of Dog trumping paying customer 🙄🙄 it's a case of MANY dog owners spending money in there who wouldn't if they banned dogs 'trumping' the minority who want dog free/restricted venues

their business their decision!!

It is nothing like disabled access.

She hasn’t asked for dogs to be banned. Just not on the furniture as it exacerbated her condition. That’s fair. But the earlier answer was “you’ve got a health problem? Then just go somewhere else and we’ll carry in as we are. We won’t make any adaptations to support you”.

I don't think landlords/owners encourage it rather than not see it happening half the time and staff are busy enough.

How about just use common sense and realise you shouldn't let your dog all over the furniture?

@Silverbook how are children more unhygienic in comparison to dogs? Can you elaborate?

I’ve never seen a toddler lick his own privates then lick his mums face. But perhaps that just me..?

I also tend to wipe my kids hands before they eat in a cafe.

macaronicheese123 · 07/02/2023 15:30

You are not being unreasonable. I like dogs too and i’m not allergic but i still believe they have no business being anywhere that’s serves food. It’s gross!

Warrensrabbit · 07/02/2023 15:31

the OP would hate me and my dog, we are welcome in a number of our local chain restaurants who actually don’t allow dogs! Picking up a takeaway with my dog the manager told me we were actually welcome in-I said that’s not what the website says and he told me that it was up to me but most in that particular town were happy with well behaved dogs as he gets a better spend per head!

Erm you're wrong there.

They literally pat seats and take photos of visiting dogs and post them on social media

I don't really understand why you think that everyone who doesn't have a problem with it is an 'entitled dog owner'. I don't care what other people do with their dogs, a dog on a seat isn't a big deal to me. My dogs have never been inside a cafe, pub etc, they wouldn't enjoy it so I don't do it. We stay away from people as much as possible when out because they aren't particularly keen on strangers touching them up. It still doesn't bother me that dogs sit on a seat. Of course dogs shouldn't be peeing on floor but floors can be cleaned it isn't the end of the world and I'm sure cafes etc have weighed this up when allowing dogs. I just can't get worked up about any of it. What I choose to do with my dogs and what other people do are different but again I can't get worked up about it, my way is not the only way.

If you are getting worked up about it then it is probably best that you avoid those situations or talk to the owners of the establishments. It would be far more effective than being 'fucked off' and 'astonished' that not everyone thinks the same way as you do.

'I don't even know why I'm astonished so many entitled dog owners think it's ok for dogs to be on furniture in public places or pee on the floor. It's absolutely no wonder people get fucked off with dogs.'

oooh, I've missed the posts where people are saying dogs should be allowed on furniture in restaurants and can piss freely on the floor - I'll have to go back and have a re-read... Personally I love nothing better than when our dog climbs on the table when we're eating out, pulls pints behind the bar before taking a whizz over the nearest toddler...
