Eating cake in the bath ok but crisps is gross?

Firstly, this is somewhat lighthearted

I enjoy a bath one night every week. It's a night my DH games and as long as both kids aren't ill, I also manage to have a nice relaxing bath. iPad with a good reality tv series, nice drink, long soak and a treat to eat. I usually get myself a yellow sticker item for post dinner yum. Trifle, piece of chocolate cake etc

Last night I was having my nice soak and hadn't picked anything up so I took up some wotsits.

DH sees me go upstairs with it and comments 'you're not having crisps in the bath are you?'.

I explained I hadn't had a chance to pick anything up and he didn't have a problem with my slice of black forest gateaux the week before

Then he sort of screws his nose up and says that cake or a nice dessert is an indulgence in the bath...but crisps is just a bit gross. He couldn't articulate why and admits the old flake advert from the 90s may have influenced his opinion.

So.. AIBU that both are fine to eat in the bath or is there something about some foods that just seem wrong while soaking

Folks, if you are of the anti eating anything in the bath then this is not for you my friends!

I don't see a problem with it? I suppose the crumbs from the Wotsits may go in the water, but so would the crumbs from cake.

Mrsjayy · 05/02/2023 12:57

You have spoiled his image of you luxuriously bathing now he just sees you stuffing your face with wotsits 😂

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 05/02/2023 12:58

I’m not quite sure why, but a glass of wine or a cocktail - and maybe a couple of chocolate truffles or something similar - sound fine to me but cake and crisps sound minging.

Do you take a plate? what about crumbs?

😆 I think there is probably a lot of truth in this! Especially when he mentioned the old flake advert.

So pleased he hasn't walked in on me demolishing half a tub of Ben and jerrys in there...which is not uncommon!

Maybe because if you dropped crisps in the bath they’d get all soggy?!

Shouldbesleeping8 · 05/02/2023 13:01

I kind of get his point. Chocolate crumbs doesn't seem as gross as cheesy crisp crumbs floating around the place.
Having said that, I've eaten toast in the bath so I guess that's similar.
Is it something to do with a chocolate treat being a luxury- like a soak in the bath is. But crisps are bog standard snacks. I suppose the snack needs to suit the surroundings - eg; pork pies at picnics, sausages at a bbq etc. Crisps in the bath just don't suit.

fatherliamdeliverance · 05/02/2023 13:02

That sounds dreamy! Preferably with a nice glass of dry bubbles too.

I have to say I'm with DH on the crisps though (for my own preference, of course you should enjoy whatever you fancy).

I'm personally more about the texture than the taste of food. I think this anti crisps-in-the-bath sentiment is because cake, trifle and most puddings are soft and moist to start with so the steamy atmosphere wouldn't affect their overall feel whereas the textural appeal of crisps is that they're, well, crispy and that would be affected negatively by the environment.

Just thinking through some more savoury things to work out whether it's a sweet vs savoury thing and maybe that's a part of it too. Possibly due to contrast. I expect you use a sweet smelling or floral bubble bath which wouldn't be in accordance with a deeply savoury dish. Also maybe the oiliness of a lot of really treaty savoury food is against the soapy cleanness of the bath. Interesting one!!

This is sort of what my DH said but couldn't articulate why!

I do take a plate with me and I have one of those bath trays so rest my drink, ipad and plate on it.

It is honestly heaven

It’s handy for getting the orange wotsit stain of your fingers. Two birds with one scone!

fatherliamdeliverance · 05/02/2023 13:04

Yes to scones in the bath!

😂

I'll sit on my hands so, not being a bath lover, but also can't imagine eating in one!

Keepyourmummysboys · 05/02/2023 13:05

I dunno. Eating black Forrest gateau in rhe bath I also find weird 😂

Tangerinie · 05/02/2023 13:06

😂😂😂

I also think it's that you've ruined his fantasy image of you eating a decadent cake or flake in the bath with your cheesy, orange wotsits.

There's no difference really. Cake crumbs can probably be just as gross as wotsit dust in the bath

IWonderWhyIBother · 05/02/2023 13:10

Why would you eat anything in the bath? Slightly weirded out.

I hadn't thought of this benefit 😆

The disclaimer came too late for me!! The thought of crumbs of any kind in my bath gives me the ick.🤣

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/02/2023 13:26

Anyone who still remembers Steptoe and Son will remember the pickled onions in the bath episode

DurhamDurham · 05/02/2023 13:27

To be fair if you dropped practically any food item in the bath it would get soggy. Cake included.

UnctuousUnicorns · 05/02/2023 13:28

YABBU. Eating anything in the bathroom, near the toliet, is gross.

MourningTea · 05/02/2023 13:30

The only thing I would eat in the bath is chocolate, anything that leaves crumbs is gross. I wouldn't eat in the bath to begin with mind, just my opinion though.

Abreezeitheglade · 05/02/2023 13:31

My best friend eats fish and chips in the bath. Every Friday night. She even has a special tray.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/02/2023 13:33

I can't remember the last bath I had, I only use a shower. So I can't even take a glass of chilled fizz in because it will get diluted with warm water.😢

Misery Note: you shouldn't really use a glass in the bath in case it gets broken and you sit on it! Although a plastic flute (that's an imitation glass not a musical instrument) is never the same.

Montague22 · 05/02/2023 13:33

I nearly always have a drink in the bath. Otherwise I just eat ripe fruit, the kind that would drip all down your wrists

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/02/2023 13:33

I do the same as you, only with a Diet Coke as I am not a drinker. Tonight I had peanut brittle but crisps (aka potato chips) are perfectly fine IF flavored -- salt and vinegar, onion and sour cream, or barbeque.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/02/2023 13:34

I think Wotsits would be fine so long as you used chopsticks.
