Eating cake in the bath ok but crisps is gross?

Firstly, this is somewhat lighthearted

I enjoy a bath one night every week. It's a night my DH games and as long as both kids aren't ill, I also manage to have a nice relaxing bath. iPad with a good reality tv series, nice drink, long soak and a treat to eat. I usually get myself a yellow sticker item for post dinner yum. Trifle, piece of chocolate cake etc

Last night I was having my nice soak and hadn't picked anything up so I took up some wotsits.

DH sees me go upstairs with it and comments 'you're not having crisps in the bath are you?'.

I explained I hadn't had a chance to pick anything up and he didn't have a problem with my slice of black forest gateaux the week before

Then he sort of screws his nose up and says that cake or a nice dessert is an indulgence in the bath...but crisps is just a bit gross. He couldn't articulate why and admits the old flake advert from the 90s may have influenced his opinion.

So.. AIBU that both are fine to eat in the bath or is there something about some foods that just seem wrong while soaking

Folks, if you are of the anti eating anything in the bath then this is not for you my friends!

Nothing wrong with eating crisps in the bath to my mind. A lovely hot bath, a good book and a large bowl of either salt and vinegar or thai sweet chilli crisps makes for a perfect evening for me.

Anyone who still remembers Steptoe and Son will remember the pickled onions in the bath episode

@MereDintofPandiculation I remember the dirty old scruff 🤢 washing up in the bath. I wonder if @CraneBoysMysteries does too, & she’s just trying to break us in gently with this cake eating thing.

007DoubleOSeven · 05/02/2023 15:44

Cake is romantic, crisps are not.

When did you last gather at a wedding to watch the happy couple take their first crunch of cheese and onion walkers?

bigbadbarry · 05/02/2023 15:47

I recommend a solero for a bath snack

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2023 15:49

I think it's romantic that he imagines you as sexy flake lady in the bath, and can see cheesy wotsits don't really do that. You will just have to hide them in your bathrobe pockets.

I quite like eating pasta in the bath, although probably not a meat sauce. A friend of mine eats her breakfast toast and jam in there. Ice cream is always good for the temperature variation but obviously has to be quick.

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2023 15:51

I’ve never eaten anything in the bath, just sounds a bit grim but then my toilet is in very close proximity to the bath and eating anything in the same room as my toilet is a very clear no from me.
Would make no difference if it was wotsits or cake so he’s being weird to comment like this only when it’s crisps!

Actually, eating anything in the presence of an uncovered bumhole or fanj is just - unseemly. <hoiks bosom>

That's one the best reasons to do it, that it's "unseemly".

Do you never eat after sex? Or during? Or just naked in general?

I always eat and drink in the bath. Where else are you going eat a ripe mango?

mydogisthebest · 05/02/2023 15:59

I am actually amazed that people eat in the bath. Drink maybe but eating just seems so wrong and weird.

Mind you I hate baths - such a waste of time and water. Haven't had one for over 25 years but when I did have one I was in and out in about 10 minutes

Well clearly as she enjoys it. What a silly question. She likes to sit in the bath , have a drink and eat some crap. it’s clear she’s not doing it as she’s starving and can’t wait till she gets out the bath, she purposefully gets in the bath to eat. 😂

people do all manner of stuff I don’t do . I don’t eat and drink in bed, I don’t have a tv in the bedroom, I can’t imagine laying there watching telly and eating pizza. But folks do. And it’s not as they are so starving they can’t wait to eat till they get out of bed.

Well, it's not silly to me is it or I wouldn't have asked 🙄

No, she's right, it was a very silly question. It's patently obvious she doesn't NEED to eat in the bath, and that she's not in there long enough to miss an entire meal.
She does it because she likes to, because she enjoys it.

And lets face it, you weren't really asking. You were doing the "I'll pretend to not understand the concept and judge hard, thinking I'm doing it undercover". Fail.

This is interesting. I've always considered myself the most unqueasy eat anything at any time sort of person but the idea of eating or drinking anything in the bath fills me with revulsionn

BurtonsRevenge · 05/02/2023 16:16

Yes crisps are actually, perhaps irrationally, disgusting to think of eating in the bath. I think it's the inevitable cheese crumb from the whatsits mixing with the bath water image. I've called social services.

CraneBoysMysteries · 05/02/2023 12:59

😆 I think there is probably a lot of truth in this! Especially when he mentioned the old flake advert.

So pleased he hasn't walked in on me demolishing half a tub of Ben and jerrys in there...which is not uncommon!

What the hell do you mean HALF a tub?

UnattendedPotato · 05/02/2023 16:20

... and soggy crumbs are soggy crumbs sweet or savoury doesn't matter as long as the bath is left clean. However a real treat is cannabis gummies and champagne but that's what I call a Christmas bath.

You are a long way from the most unqueasy person. More the opposite.

Not understanding people's issues here. If I lie on the couch with wine and crisps, that's ok, right? But if I lie in the same exact position sans clothes and added hot water, thats revolting and disgusting and everything else?
Makes no sense.

Also not getting why everyone is banging on about food being in the bath. Are you are unable to get your food into your mouth? If you eat on said couch is it covered in crisp and cake debris everytime? Maybe I'm super agile but when I eat in the bath it all goes into my mouth, not all over me.
(apart from the mango, of course)

Casilero · 05/02/2023 16:23

It never occurred to me to take snacks into the bath. I do like to spend hours in there on occasion though, often with a glass/bottle of wine. I don't think cake's really a suitable bath food, but olives, cheese, maybe a selection of antipasti might be quite nice. I could get one of those bath shelf things that go across the bath 🤔

UnattendedPotato · 05/02/2023 16:18

What the hell do you mean HALF a tub?

I guess the first half must be for when you’re waiting for the bath to run

AKAsomeoneelse · 05/02/2023 16:32

I wouldn’t eat in the bath but I do like a glass of wine in the bath. I wouldn’t judge anyone for it eating in it though and I don’t get the ‘I couldn’t eat anything next to the toilet’ - as long as the toilet is clean, someone hasn’t just done a stinky poo in it and it is just an innocent bystander then I don’t see the problem.

Pleiades2020 · 05/02/2023 16:34

Tiramisu. By far the best thing to eat in the bath. Very luxurious. One of those little pots. Just don't sprinkle the chocolate! I'd imagine crisps are difficult as they'd melt with wet hands and get in the water?

CraneBoysMysteries · 05/02/2023 16:46

Haha thanks @TheBigWangTheory . I was wondered about all these crumbs people keep mentioning! Despite in a bath I can still get food from the plate to my mouth without spilling it 😆

And to the poster who mentioned tiramisu... it is my favourite dessert! But I'm yet to find a good supermarket version. Recommendations welcome!

Eating in the bath is gross. Full stop.

I love to eat and I love a bath but not at the same time.

CraneBoysMysteries · 05/02/2023 16:48

And actually, thinking about that flake advert. I can't think of anything more likely to get crumbs in the bath than a bloody flake!!

Some Cheetos, wine and my phone and I could stay in there all day.

Unfortunately I just about finish the wine and the toddler clamours in 😭

ToriLynn · 05/02/2023 17:08

Cake can be eaten with a fork, crisps can't, therefore touching them with potentially wet hands

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/02/2023 17:10

So yeah I’m in the no eating in that room camp…that being said if you are ok with that then I don’t see a difference in what you eat in the bath.

ok except for the pasta dinner that’s wrong on any scale 🤣
