Ok, so not strictly AIBU but I need voting.

Please help settle a friendly disagreement about something trivial…..curtains.

In your opinion, which style of curtains look the most dated/unfashionable? Eyelet curtains (with the metal rings at the top) or curtains on rails with a string at one end so you pull the string and both curtains open together?

YANBU - having a rail with a pull cord at the end looks dated/unfashionable.

YABU - eyelet/ring top curtains look dated/unfashionable

I’ve voted but not according to the silly categories you put up there.

ScramblePud · 04/02/2023 20:49

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever come across curtains with a string that opens both sides. Personally, I think curtains rarely look good and almost always look dated. There are exceptions, of course, and I even have curtains but, in general, I think most curtains look dated.

youshouldnthaveasked · 04/02/2023 20:51

Have you got a picture of these pull cord curtains? I’ve never heard of them.

Keepyourmummysboys · 04/02/2023 20:52

God curtains are so dated, younger so many lovely blinds now,,,silk, velvet, I’d not do curtains in either of these categories.

picklemewalnuts · 04/02/2023 20:52

I can't vote.
Curtains with a cord are classic I think. The opposite of fashionable. It does depend on the track. If you can see slightly warped plastic track it looks well past it!

Eyelet and tab top curtains on poles are dated.

Notplayingball · 04/02/2023 20:52

YANBU

jacult · 04/02/2023 20:52

both look dated to me.

Bosk · 04/02/2023 20:53

Eyelet curtains are an abomination.

LittleMrsPerfect · 04/02/2023 20:53

I only like Eyelet curtains, all other styles to me look untidy as you see a plastic rail or the curtains don't hide the metal rail.

Yirk · 04/02/2023 20:55

Wow!
Didn't realise my poor curtain rail had become so dated and distasteful!

Flavabobble · 04/02/2023 20:58

I craved the string pull curtains that lots of my aunties had. So much so that I insisted on getting some when I first bought a house - 1992. So I think they're old-fashioned. However I also think that;
a) blinds are even more old-fashioned (especially vertical blinds) and
b) eyelet curtains are the height of fashion.
So what do I know..

MaraScottie · 04/02/2023 20:59

Tull lenght/height wave top curtains can look really contemporary, I wouldn't go with anything else.

Curtains that only go half way down are also hideous.

Smilethoughyourheartisaching · 04/02/2023 21:03

Just go with what you prefer. All of these strangers on mumsnet don’t have to live with it

Draincover · 04/02/2023 21:06

If you have pelmets, you would never know the difference. And if you care about trapping heat, you would have a pelmet!

JaceLancs · 04/02/2023 21:06

I have neither
my curtains are on poles with rings and curtain hooks

ShinyMe · 04/02/2023 21:06

Just have what you like. Who cares if it looks 'dated' in someone else's eyes.

My curtains in my bedroom and living room were my granny's. I remember them in her house when I was a child in the 70s, and they appear in photos of my mum in the early 60s. I like them, I don't care if they look old fashioned.

OverProtectiveMumOfPFB · 04/02/2023 21:07

Rails but with a pole. Eyelet are ugly and pull cord can break/go uneven.

AuntSallie · 04/02/2023 21:08

I haven’t voted as I give zero fucks what is in fashion.
I prefer eyelet curtains because you can adjust how much they are open or closed infinitely. With the draw pull style, the curtains have to be mirror images of each other and that is technologically inferior.

StillWantingADog · 04/02/2023 21:09

Rails and a pole

but mostly here to try and understand the curtain hate!!

(sorry to sidetrack but is there anything really terrible about having a small window with just one curtain rather than a pair? My mother thinks this is the height of distasteful!)

WednesdaysPlaits · 04/02/2023 21:09

French pleats all the way.

cords are good but pull bars are posher

NEVER anything but floor length

eyelets look really cheap.

DeedlessIndeed · 04/02/2023 21:10

I can't stand the eyelet curtains, especially with a chrome/silver eyelets - I think they can look a bit cheap...

VioletCharlotte · 04/02/2023 21:11

I'm laughing at this as I had no idea there was so much hatred for curtains! Does everyone just have blinds them? Don't they make the room feel cold?

Can’t stand?

Wow. I mean, I don’t have them, but I can stand them if I saw them. i don’t go round pricing up people’s soft furnishings when I see them though?

Viviennemary · 04/02/2023 21:13

I think those eyelet curtains are really ugly looking. In a few years nobody will have them.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/02/2023 21:14

Eyelet curtains are easier to hang and look neater but NEVER use the stupid toilet roll trick - it looks pants.

My nicest curtains, however, are actually rod pocket/slot top velvet ones. They look so smart.
