To think there’s just something a bit special about people from Manchester & Greater Manchester

On behalf of all mancs, we don't care what YOU think.

There's so many reasons why mancunians are the greatest people to have ever existed 😌 Not least is our ability to cultivate a healthy sense of irreverence. Which is useful when faced with a bunch of southerners on mumsnet spouting off.

Why start or post on this thread if you don't care?

It's an AIBU - did you just want everyone to agree with the OP or not post? A bit fascist, isn't it?

pigsinoodies · 01/02/2023 22:08

BloodAndFire · 01/02/2023 21:29

Personally i don't think I would be looking to Simply Red, Take That, M People and one of Crosby Stills Nash and Young to prop up my sense of regionalist pride.

How are Beautiful South from Manchester?

BloodAndFire · 01/02/2023 22:08

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:59

@BloodAndFire I think the majority here have been lighthearted, fun and fairly polite to each other..I’ve only seen yours and one other poster who are quite aggressive and mean in the delivery.

I don’t agree at all about it being white, macho, violent etc…

Sheffield though, I agree, is also a great place.

My posts are lighthearted. But the reality is that my experience of Manchester/Leeds is the most intense and aggressive racism I've ever experienced, with a hugely macho and violent culture.

I don't think it's a north/south thing. Like I said I bloody love Sheffield and everything that's come out of there. And i have a soft spot for St Helens.

But what were you expecting with this thread? What kind of responses were you hoping for?

I would never post the same thing about London because (a) I don't believe it and (b) I don't base my sense of self-worth on how many MOR indie bands have been signed in a 20-mile radius of where I'm from.

Because their name is ironic...is that what you mean?

Paul Heaton was an old neighbour of mine!

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 22:13

@BloodAndFire Very lighthearted 🤣hence the snide comment at the end.
That’s okay though..

It is a shame you had those experiences though and if you ever visit again, doesn’t sound like you’re keen to…at all 😬hopefully things might be a bit more positive

How quickly does it take to wear off when they go outside the city and does it cause a hangover?

You've got the tone all wrong.
Sincerely, we don't care.

If you know and understand mancunians then you wouldn't need me to tell you this thread was light hearted.
Mancunians are always taking the piss....having a joke or whatever. We just don't take ourselves too seriously. It seems down south though a joke is seen as an invitation to start a duel.....

Paul Heaton isn't from Manchester, grew up in Sheffield (born on the Wirral)

mommatoone · 01/02/2023 22:20

God l thought this thread was lighthearted, but not so sure now!.
Im a manc , and yeh theres some bellends here like there is everywhere!.
But... we have a real diverse society that extends to all nationalities/ genders/ race/ religion/ anything!!!
Not too mention our music scene. Im an old gimmer now - But ..... the hacienda, joy division, the smiths, Oasis, james. I could go on...
Manchester isnt the dogs bollocks for everyone. But for those ' givin it large arrr kid' - come see for yerself !!!

nationallampoons · 01/02/2023 22:22

I've met some lovely ones, but a lot of obnoxious ones. Same everywhere I guess

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 22:24

@mommatoone It was supposed to be lighthearted 🤷🏻‍♀️😅
Ohhh The Hacienda, I only caught the end of it and went a few times at 16 ish, before it sadly closed

@INFJay Exactly this..it went a bit defensive and mean, not sure how that happened 🙈

He's not from Manchester though and they're not known as a Manchester band.

He's from Wirral, moved to Yorkshire then Surrey. The band's generally regarded as being from Hull.

Fairislefandango · 01/02/2023 22:27

Almost everyone thinks their bit of UK is special

I don't think they do. Well... they may well think their bit of the UK has special features, areas if natural beauty etc, but I think most people are sensible enough to realise that every area has a mix of people. I've met plenty of people from Manchester. I can't say I've noticed a special quality common to them.

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 22:28

@pigsinoodies I don’t know if anyone said they’re from Manchester though? 🤷🏻‍♀️I think it’s just the Northern thing, them being from The North?

Well he definitely lives/lived in Manchester for years! Maybe he tired of Hull🤣

Or he may have been a frequent visitor of Badly Drawn Boy, who lived around the corner- used to see him regularly though.

I’m a born and bred Londoner but have to say I have a special place in my heart for Liverpool. Love the vibe, accent, everything and so many of them are as funny as fuck and know how to have a good time.

Haven’t spent enough time in Manchester to judge whether it could replace Liverpool in my heart.

Justleaveitblankthen · 01/02/2023 22:34

lieselotte · 01/02/2023 21:30

Technically I am from Greater Manchester (although it was Lancashire when I was born), so I agree Grin

Though I actually prefer Liverpool and Leeds to Manchester [ducks]

Same here! I don't rate my own Lancashire town as the friendliest, but just next door in Bolton? Salt of the earth 😊

They did, I wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise.

That's some cringey shit right there.

mommatoone · 01/02/2023 22:37

@Yousillybugger well i dont recall much of the hacienda nights. I was there. But not really🤯,But the atmosphere was immense, the building is still there, they still do hacienda/ house type nights- afternoon evening's! Theres all sorts going on.
And what about afflecks Palace. So diverse, always has been. Love Manny ❤️ x

mommatoone · 01/02/2023 22:38

@LeilaGetTheHose - i think you need to get your coat love.
