Lived there 10 years and I never understood the 'we're from Manchester, we do things differently round here'. Yes people are friendly but same as any other northern city/ town

People are mad, I see it all the time on local Facebook pages 'Only in OurTown!' used for both good and bad scenarios, council decisions or news stories.

Presumably written by people who have never ventured beyond the borders of OurTown, or they'd have realised that OtherTowns are all much the same Hmm

No, but close; Wilmslow!

That definitely is the worse side of Manchester!

BloodAndFire · 01/02/2023 21:25

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:22

@BloodAndFire 100%

100% what?

Happyjoyjoy · 01/02/2023 21:27

I 5th Glasgow. 😀

BloodAndFire · 01/02/2023 21:28

I did once have a friend from Salford/Eccles, who helpfully informed me: "If you ever meet a coloured person, right, don't call them coloured. They don't like that. Just call them black."

Me, born and bred in London: 😬🤐😳

So yeah... maybe there is something a bit special. But not quite the way you meant it, I don't think.

Twawmyarse2 · 01/02/2023 21:28

Has no one mentioned the Smiths yet?

Joy division?
the Buzzcocks?
the Fall?
Take That?
10cc?
happy Mondays?
the Courteeners?
Blossoms?
the 1975?
The chemical brothers?
simply red?
the Hollies?
M people?
James?
black grape?
the beautiful south?
Graeme Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash (Salford lad)?

the FUCKING BEE GEES??????!!!!!

Sorry, but I just have to remind you of just some of the fantastic bands/singers to come out of Manchester.

All that "ee ar our kid I'm a propa manc me like kid" shite does get on my nerves, but I do think us mancs can be very proud of our musical heritage!

Cuppasoupmonster · 01/02/2023 21:29

I’ve only met a few and omg the lies that come out their mouths! Like Jay from the inbetweeners! Just me??

Personally i don't think I would be looking to Simply Red, Take That, M People and one of Crosby Stills Nash and Young to prop up my sense of regionalist pride.

Hobbesmanc · 01/02/2023 21:30

Wilmslow isn't Manchester! It's the equivalent of Home Counties Surrey! I love Manchester. Came here as a youngster in 1988 and never went home.

Can't deny though that it's looking a bit run down. So much money pumped into high rises and new housing areas. Yet driving in down Princess Parkway is like driving on a third world road. Pot holes that will swallow you up. And parts of the north of the city need serious spending.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 01/02/2023 21:30

Are you sure that Special People from Greater Manchester people consider themselves from Manchester ;)

lieselotte · 01/02/2023 21:30

Technically I am from Greater Manchester (although it was Lancashire when I was born), so I agree Grin

Though I actually prefer Liverpool and Leeds to Manchester [ducks]

LadyAstor · 01/02/2023 21:32

I could say the same about Stoke, Yorkshire and Newcastle.

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:32

@BloodAndFire 100% that Elbow are something good to come out of Manchester 🙄

So, you met one person from Salford who said that..and you’re basing all other people from Manchester on that interaction 😅

Well, I’m a born and bred Londoner so not sure my opinion is worth much Wink… but I prefer Scousers to Mancs.

Well, it's a good job we're all different then isn't it me old cocker?

I can appreciate all types of music from all cities and parts of the world, I'm open minded like that - but there's no denying all the above bands have had massive success and lots of hit records. And lots and lots of fans who seem to love them.

I guess you're just wanting to be a miserable, obtuse git though aren't you?

Pray tell, where do YOU come from BloodandFire?

KimberleyClark · 01/02/2023 21:34

I agree OP. Though I am biased as I married one.

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:34

@Andrelaxzz Why?

VintageThoughts · 01/02/2023 21:36

Sorry. You're the wrong side of the Pennines.

Yorkshire's where it's at 😁

WishIdDoneItYearsAgo · 01/02/2023 21:39

@Hobbesmanc, we rented in Didsbury for 18mths before buying in Wilmslow and I worked in town so do know more than just the end of the A34.
But Wilmslow isn’t quite as removed either physically or psychologically from Manchester as Surrey is from London. I’ve lived in Guildford which is very similar town but there’s far less popping into town for lunch/shopping/a night out.

Andrelaxzz · 01/02/2023 21:40

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:34

@Andrelaxzz Why?

I used to work in Wilmslow, most the town don't consider themselves as Mancs but more want to be seen as Cheshire set. Lots and lots of Botox and talk about cars.

Wilmslow isn't in Manchester? It's Cheshire east so presumably that's why people from there don't consider themselves Mancunian Confused

Andrelaxzz · 01/02/2023 21:46

Exactly!

Yousillybugger · 01/02/2023 21:46

@Andrelaxzz @Twawmyarse2 It would be considered Greater Manchester though, wouldn’t it? Also can be called Cheshire. Yes, lots of it is like that, not as much as Alderley Edge..seriously wealthy, but it also has the more *Normal areas as sang about by The Doves, I think they were from there and ‘Black & White town’ may have been about there
