To think this IS racist META?

Pollyperch · 31/01/2023 23:58

Local paper FB group. Story about longstanding popular Chinese takeaway closing down.

Lots of nice messages but one says "at least the last few Local cats and dogs can relax".

I reported to FB / META as racist. I received a response saying the comment did not breach their community standards and I should hide the commentator if I was offended. I appealed this decision but same response. I can no longer view this comment.

AIBU to think META are wrong and this is racist?

They haven’t taken it down?

OP did your report go to a human or a robot? Probably the latter

DemiColon · 01/02/2023 00:19

I think I would describe it as potentially being in bad taste rather than racist.

Though it might be more a comment on what the person thought of the quality of the food. I was in a restaurant on a different continent once and served what was supposed to be goat but I am pretty sure was actually dog. It did not live up to my expectations, that's for sure.

In the UK?

You're racist too.

Pollyperch · 01/02/2023 00:20

No just blocked for me. The comment is still there.

No still there. Just hidden for me.

They never seem to take anything down. I don't think the reports are actually looked at by a human

itswednesdayy · 01/02/2023 00:22

i watched a documentary which covered facebook’s content moderation. I wouldn’t be surprised if you received an automated response. I imagine an algorithm might struggle to detect racism there. I think they initially had people manually root through reports but it probably wasn’t cost effective

Pollyperch · 01/02/2023 00:23

Yes in the UK. Maybe I overreacted then but I was very shocked someone in 2023 would say this!

Seriously? I doubt these people do, that's exactly what racism is .... assuming all people of the same 'race' are the same. Bet you wouldn't like people to assume things about you based on negative British stereotypes

I really don’t think that Chinese people running takeaways and restaurants in the uk are going to be kidnapping fluffy and rover to create their dishes. So why does that ‘joke’ need to be made? In my opinion the only need for it to be made is to other Chinese people, or to put them down in some way. It’s clearly derogatory and not meant in a complimentary way.

It’s racism as Chinese people are just that - people. Just like us, cats and dogs are seen as beloved pets in China. Any cat or dog used as food is essentially someone’s lifelong companion pet stolen against their will. With the loved pet being brutally killed.

It’s racist to assume all Chinese people consume dog or cat meat, when in reality the majority are against the abhorrent practice of pet kidnapping and killings.

Why would you automatically assuming Chinese would approve of such depravity? This ‘’meat” is considered niche - the fact it sold in underground wet markets is indicative that it’s not a Chinese societal norm. There’s likely somewhere in the UK dark web where you can source this meat too, doesn’t mean we have a “dog meat” culture.

saraclara · 01/02/2023 00:44

Did you report it to three admins of the group? That's the swiftest way to get such posts removed.

saraclara · 01/02/2023 00:45

The, not three

"It’s racist to assume all Chinese people consume dog or cat meat, when in reality the majority are against the abhorrent practice of pet kidnapping and killings."

Please quote an authorative source for this assertation.

And please say where I stated that "Chinese would approve of such depravity?"

Putting words into people's mouths is not a good basis for a discussion.

You’ve answered your own question.

Presuming every takeaway is involved in this practice is why it’s racist.

OP I find that META is an American company and happy to go off American standards but probably don’t understand why that racist here (unless it’s a thing in the US too)

Well it's pretty racist that you've used this as a comparison. African food is, as far as I'm aware, more likely to contain goat but is 100% human-flesh free.

In a local Chinese takeaway in a British town? Are you on glue?

What on earth has cannibalism got to do with African food. Don't drag others into this mess.

Thank you. Not sure where it got this reference from, but said poster is definitely racist too. Also why drag Africans into this.

Readytoplay · 01/02/2023 06:19

Unfortunately, the Meta reporting detector is fairly basic and it’s automatically programmed to only discover the “explicit” slurs (N-word, etc.) and not ‘micro aggressions’ (which are still every bit as offensive).
Chinese restaurants serving Dogs and Cat is a stereotypical idea that was once seen as ‘humour’, but rightly, not acceptable by today's standards. The other week I was watching an episode of ‘Only Fools’ when the following interaction between the brothers takes place when arriving at a Chinese takeaway which they are refurbishing. When Del Opens the door, a cat comes sprinting out :

Del: Oi, don't let him out...Well that's going to please Mr Chin innit?
Rodney: Was it his pet?
Del: No but number 39's off the menu.

As much as a classic the show is, there are some moments (such as this) that makes me cringe. However, this episode is from the early 80s (it's a ‘Grandad’ episode) and society has moved on and become more educated on things such as this.
The reason I mention this is because I am going to guess that the person who posted that comment on your Facebook page was a White, middle age, male. As, (at the risk of sounding hypocritical as this is also a stereotype) they are often the democratic who don’t always realise that humour from yesterday is seen as outdated today.

TheDogIsTooEarlyForTea · 01/02/2023 06:22

I don't think META care.

If they banned offensive content their platform would no longer work as intended and would tank. So they leave it because it drives their business model.

They are just hate peddlers disguising themselves as your friend.
