To think this IS racist META?

Local paper FB group. Story about longstanding popular Chinese takeaway closing down.

Lots of nice messages but one says "at least the last few Local cats and dogs can relax".

I reported to FB / META as racist. I received a response saying the comment did not breach their community standards and I should hide the commentator if I was offended. I appealed this decision but same response. I can no longer view this comment.

It’s so arbitrary! I know someone who got a 24 hr Facebook ban for racism for posting “Those crazy Russians!” She’s Russian.

As also mentioned in a recent post in France horse meat is eaten

These have historic origins and different cultures have different norms

But these being facts does not separate from a cultural stereotype (dog is eaten by some in China) and the racially motivated ‘joke’ that a Chinese takeaway in the UK would have been secretly capturing and cooking dogs & cats

However, 2 takeaways local to me, owned by the same family, were closed down a few years ago after they were found to be serving cat meat 😱 I'd had a questionable looking and textured/tasting meat from one of them and had stopped going there and put it out of my mind until I saw the reports 😬

And what has that got to do with Chinese takeaway?

As a slight drift along with eating habits in cultural norms / stereotyping and individuals:

I come from an island family, in a world travelling / sea faring / exploring community and our family tree is traced back to another country with another historic trend of world travelling / sea faring / exploring culture

Fish feature strongly in their diets

Culturally & stereotypically I should eat fish
If you were to hear a little knowledge about me and were putting together a meal, you’ll probably think of a nice fish

But in my childhood I was overcome in a fish market and was sick
I don’t eat fish, hate the smell of fish, dislike the taste of fish and still get queasy in fish aisle or on the market
All because of one childhood memory

It's a tired old joke and yes it could be regarded as racist.

This. I know people eat dog, monkey, other things I wouldn't in other countries. I know because I've been there and seen it. It's a cultural difference. We eat pig, which is pretty reprehensible on many levels to many people.

That has no bearing on a joke that a takeaway in Britain is kidnapping family pets. THAT'S the racist bit.

Ha!!! I have certainly learnt that from this thread but thanks to PP for the tips on how to report in the future.

I think you're right. I was banned for a few weeks because I called a naughty puppy on a dog page a cheeky little monkey.
