Daughters birthday and one friend is vegan

My daughter 9 yes old wants me to order a vegan cake for her birthday party for a friend that is vegan?? I'm going to spend a fair bit on this cake and honestly I'm not vegan neither is anyone else, just one of he friends is. What do I do? buy some vegan cupcakes separately? Should that be rude?

People will definitely notice a vegan cake. Get separate cupcakes or an apple.

An apple 🤣🤣🤣

I think the nine year olds will just notice the sugar.

@IScreamAtMichaelangelos I'd like your recipe please

Did you know ... a lot of supermarket doughnuts are naturally vegan.

People happily eat them, no questions asked.

However, if you buy an almost identical doughnut that is labelled 'vegan', a proportion of people turn their noses up and act like big babies refusing to eat the 'vegan food'.

That it true. I was like this myself before I tried being a vegan and lots of things are naturally vegan. Dark chocolate is usually

I wouldn’t be ordering a vegan cake. If she’s made the choice to be vegan she can learn early the consequences of doing so.

This is such a bonkers response to a child choosing to be vegan!

You'd think they had chosen a life of crime!

But back to the question, most bakers can now make amazing vegan cakes, we often get them as DH is dairy intolerant and they are just as good or better.

However, when this situation has cropped up in our school's group, parent and child have been very happy with cupcakes and just pleased someone has gone to the effort. One mum I know always offers to bring a vegan alternative for their child so the pressure is not on birthday mum but it has never been necessary.

Well done your daughter for considering others and being a thoughtful friend!

YABU.

If it's your daughter's party and she wants a vegan cake I don't see why you wouldn't. You're already going to spend money on a cake, why would it make a difference?

Vegan cake is suitable for vegans, vegetarians and omnis alike, so it's fine for everyone. Seems the more straightforward option. If your DD had asked for a nonvegan cake then that would be fine too and you could just get some vegan cupcakes, but if she wants a vegan cake it seems a bit daft to die on this hill of insisting that no, the cake has to be nonvegan.

Reindear · 31/01/2023 10:37

You can get amazing vegan cakes- you’d prob be able to get a lovely one especially if chocolate flavour. But Yanbu to get vegan cupcakes if you want a standard cake. I’m not vegan but I have family members who are and I’ve been surprised by how good the vegan cakes are

How're people so confident that they would be able to tell if a cake was vegan or not?? My (non vegan) friend had a vegan wedding cake and didn't tell anyone and no one knew. The only issue is when you get a bad quality vegan cake then people will know it doesn't taste good but the same applies for a bad quality non vegan cake. Plus they're 9 I'm sure as long as it's a cake they'll be happy!

They're just being snide, that's all. Some nonvegans love to pretend that they only ever eat nonvegan food and would be able to tell if it was vegan.

like that moron on a breakfast show recently who was waxing lyrical over a vegan sausage saying how they could absolutely tell the difference and how meat sausages taste better, only to find out it was a vegan sausage and try backtrack... embarrassing.

KILM · 31/01/2023 10:46

Starting to wonder if I live in a weird place - we are semi rural but a nice town and loads of places do fantastic vegan cakes etc - yes, if you compared a regular chocolate brownie side by side to a vegan brownie you might notice a difference but if you aren't looking for it, you would definitely miss that it was vegan. And its all delicious, and im not vegan! Are people just living in places with bad cake provisions???

Intrepidescape · 31/01/2023 11:21

In my city vegan cakes are very easy to come by - there’s a chain of cake shops that sell them. I think it’s because so many children have egg & dairy allergies.

Buy a vegan cake if the vegan RSVPs.

Disagree with this.

If you have an allergy so severe it will put you in hospital you have to let the host know that. It's not up to the host to disclose the basis that everything is made. the vast majority of people have no issue with the ingredients in a vegan cake.

Disagree too. If you have an allergy you let people know regardless. I'm not vegan and eat chickpeas.

Besides, vegan food isn't some non food stuff. Vegan food is as unprocessed or processed as non vegan food. It's not like vegans are slipping you poison.

No, no, no!

As a few of us have already explained in this thread, vegan thread is not always suitable for vegetarians or omnivores due to the presence of random vegan substitutes. Many people with allergies can eat 'normal' cake as they're not allergic to those ingredients. It can take us by surprise if you use something weird without warning us, as it could be an allergen.

I frequently get caught out by coconut oil. Another poster here has said they have problems with aquafaba.

I do make an effort to accommodate vegans, but I never assume foods are interchangeable and I make all ingredients used crystal clear.

You wouldn't expect chickpeas in a Victoria sponge, so you wouldn't expect to have to communicate a chickpea allergy unless someone explicitly told you the food was vegan.

I disagree with those disagreeing!

You don't want a full list of what I'm allergic to. It's as long as your arm, you'd get bored and I'd get embarrassed.

Instead, I communicate allergens that are likely to be relevant to the situation.

SleeplessInEngland · 31/01/2023 11:34

Just get the cake your daughter wants.

RampantIvy · 31/01/2023 11:37

All this nonsense about vegan cakes not tasting as good, being expensive, filled with dodgy substitutes is just a load of judgy twattish bollocks.

I agree. The ignorance on this thread from a minority of posters is mind boggling. Also, we don't know why the friend is vegan. It could be because she is dairy and egg intolerant.

The vegan cakes I have made don't have weird ingredients. The baking powder is activated by acid so recipes will have jam or apple sauce or even vinegar to help make the cake rise.

@Blueflag22 I would also get some Oreos as they are vegan.

JustFrustrated · 31/01/2023 11:39

Just to say, I choose to make vegan cake over none vegan most days.

Every recipe I've tried has had a better finish and taste than a standard cake.

The oil makes them denser and more moist. Which in my opinion, is exactly how chocolate cake should be.

I wouldn’t be ordering a vegan cake. If she’s made the choice to be vegan she can learn early the consequences of doing so.

The consequences being that some people are irrationally unpleasant about vegans?

The OPs daughter has asked for a vegan cake. It is lovely of her to include her friend in that way. If the cake isn’t very nice (which if it comes from someone who makes cakes professionally is very unlikely) then she will know for next time.

At 9 she is is very unlikely to have made the choice herself much more likely to have controlling parents unable to put their child's needs first. But the vegan cake op and be proud your daughter cares more about others than the adults in her life.

🤣

Or maybe she’s just a compassionate child who is trying to minimise, as much as possible, her contribution to the suffering of animals.

Who knows!

mindutopia · 31/01/2023 11:56

I used to have a colleague who brought in a vegan cake every Friday to share around the office. They were amazing. So good that I got the recipes and made them instead of all the rubbish cakes I'd normally make.

How kind of your daughter to think about her friend and wanting her to be included. The friend's mum hasn't messaged demanding a vegan cake. You should praise that kindness in your daughter and support her wishes to make it a happy day for all of her friends.

Cileymyrus · 31/01/2023 11:56

being new to the vegan world due to a recent egg/milk allergy diagnosis I have been taste testing a lot of treat food.

my immediate observation is most supermarket/mass produced vegan food tastes shit because it’s not just vegan, it’s “free from”.

by the time you’ve taken egg, milk, nuts, wheat, gluten and every other fucking allergen out of a cake or whatever it’s basically sugar held together with god knows what.

and that is most people’s experience of “vegan”

make a cake with margarine instead of butter, and find a recipe that omits eggs- use oil, apple sauce, jam or similar. Then no one need panic about chickpea allergies…

faffadoodledo · 31/01/2023 13:20

Not a vegan. But I am always taken aback at how angry the concept seems to make some people!

If you have a severe allergy which puts you in hospital surely you would be checking every food stuff vegan or not. People put all sorts of stuff in cakes and other food stuff whether they are vegan or not.

XenoBitch · 30/01/2023 20:46

A vegan cake won't hurt the non vegans. I can guarantee they wont even notice the lack of eggs or dairy in it.

I've never had a vegan cake that tasted as nice as a non-vegan one though and I've tasted loads.
