Daughters birthday and one friend is vegan

My daughter 9 yes old wants me to order a vegan cake for her birthday party for a friend that is vegan?? I'm going to spend a fair bit on this cake and honestly I'm not vegan neither is anyone else, just one of he friends is. What do I do? buy some vegan cupcakes separately? Should that be rude?

I am going For vegan cake. Reason I asked is most coming aren't vegan but yes my daughter is very very considerate like that.and did ask for vegan cake. She isn't vegan herself and isn't fussed herself but she does consider others. I am aware more people are vegan now and I will be looking into a vegan cake that everyone hopefully likes 😅

If you're handy with baking I can recommend you a really easy recipe. The decoration, of course, may be another issue! :)

If it's made properly, nobody will notice. I've hosted many events where I've provided vegan cake. Nobody has ever realised.
(The reason I do this is because I invite vegans to the events and it's easier to start with their requirements and then add things in if necessary, food-wise)

I'm going to need your receipes then because ones me and my family have tried have been terrible, haha. They've come out like bricks. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Although my Mum did make some lovely cupcakes once 😋

People truly will notice the difference 😁

I don’t think they will. I’ve made vegan & gluten free cakes for birthday parties and they come out perfectly normal tasting.

Dramaalpacas · 30/01/2023 22:06

Your daughter wants her friend to be included in the cake eating and cutting and not handed a separate cupcake. That is lovely. Just go for a vegan cake!

GimmeBiscuits · 30/01/2023 22:07

@Clara84 if you DM me I will gladly give you a recipe. Recently gave it to someone to make ginger cake with and they gave it to several friends (one is vegan, the others are not). The vegan was very happy and the others did not notice any difference.

Mymews · 30/01/2023 22:10

@Blueflag22 your daughter sounds so lovely and considerate. You should be really proud of her. Hope she enjoys her birthday and her vegan cake!

saraclara · 30/01/2023 22:12

I love vegan 'grown up' cakes, because I'm a sucker for ground almond and polenta based Italian-style cakes. But they're not to most nine year olds' tastes. The only vegan cakes I've had that are made to be like normal sponge cakes, have been disappointing.

Tellmeimcrazy · 30/01/2023 22:14

Of course, people can tell the difference between non vegan and vegan cake. Whoever says otherwise is full of BS. I would give your daughter the option of having a regular cake and buying a couple of vegan cupcakes. She probably hasn't even thought of that option. If she insists on vegan cake after that, then get it. Unfortunately, if she is then disappointed, then it's too bad.

rampila · 30/01/2023 22:14

Your daughter sounds lovely wanting to accommodate her friend. I think vegan cakes taste different, the eggs (lack of) make a difference... but honestly who really cares, isn't it about enjoying yourselves, blowing out candles with nearest and dearest etc?!
We have paid £100 for cakes for some birthdays and bought others from Asda. Just depending on how much we have and how far in advance I remember Blush

RampantIvy · 30/01/2023 22:15

vegan cake is vile!

Bad vegan cake is vile.
Good vegan cake is delicious. You just haven't tasted a good one.

Oh yes, and this. Polenta cakes, olive oil cakes, dark gooey brownies.... all delish. But not butter creamy and birthday ish for 9 year olds

Hoedowndom · 30/01/2023 22:16

It's easier to just do one vegan cake than something separate I would think.
If you're buying ready-made these two from Asda are really nice.
Alternatively just use any Betty Crocker mix and replace all the wet ingredients with 300ml of coke or lemonade, depending on the cake flavour (the red velvet one made with coke is amazing) then cover with Betty Crocker icing.
Lots of doughnuts and yum yum are also vegan.

If you can get a vegan one , why not? Then you do a nice thing and make her feel included. If you can’t get one, that’s different.

MajorCarolDanvers · 30/01/2023 22:17

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 30/01/2023 20:48

People will definitely notice a vegan cake. Get separate cupcakes or an apple.

They are 9 year olds. Not sophisticated foodies. Of course they won't notice or care.

Your child is very considerate in asking for a vegan cake.

I wouldn’t be ordering a vegan cake. If she’s made the choice to be vegan she can learn early the consequences of doing so.

Quite right! No cake for the vegan child!

Let's hope the OP also helps the other non-vegan children understand the consequences of their "choices" by slaughtering a pig in front of them to make some sausage rolls.

Fucking hell, that's a bit harsh! Plus at her age isn't it likely it's the parent's choice.

ItsNotReallyChaos · 30/01/2023 22:30

I haven't RTFT so someone else may have pointed this out but if anyone does just get a vegan cake for a whole party, be aware that vegan cakes often contain nuts/soya/chickpeas which are all along the 14 common allergens so others might need to be warned about the cake.

jtaeapa · 30/01/2023 22:34

If your dd has asked for a vegan cake, then I'd just get a shop bought vegan cake.

I do think it's a bit much though - a more normal approach would be to get a cake that your dd would have chosen and put some vegan cupcakes with it.

Is she trying to impress the vegan friend?

LuciferRising · 30/01/2023 22:36

Maybe learn from your daughter?

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Unless the child has a serious MEDICAL reason for having to follow a vegan diet, I would not be pandering to her. Naturally if the is coeliac/lactose/gluten intolerant or had a nut allergy, I would make sure there was something for her.

Nope. Get the cake you want. Order a vegan cupcake.

This

Absolutely. Ignore the birthday girls wishes. Its clearly actually all about you.

soboredtonight · 30/01/2023 22:43

I started the new year vegan with a view to cutting out dairy products and meat completely.

As it is, I'm eating some dairy, no meat but at leastabout 75% less dairy than I was.

I've stopped eating eggs aswell, as in boiled, scrambled, fried, poached etc but I will still eat it cake if it's got eggs in it, I'm choosing g vegan where available and an option. Can honestly say I think it's just as nice.

RampantIvy · 30/01/2023 22:44

I am gobsmacked at some of the nasty and ignorant responses on here by @Mariposistaand @GreaterStickle who want to punish a nine year old for being vegan Shock

Just spiteful.

And I'm not vegan, just broad minded and accepting of other people's dietary choices.

You say consequences like its a bad thing. If a 9 year old has made the choice to be vegan because they care about the planet and the animals on it. I would applaud her for her intelligence.
