All the Pat Butcher comments reminded me that Pam St Clement, the actress who played Pat, was one of the founders of Stonewall, back in the day when it campaigned against Section 28 and for LGB rights. Somehow, thinking of her and her work - well, it just diminished Smith that little bit more.
I have now seen the whole video. And it was - dull. Derivative. Unoriginal. The opening bars, as he sings 'Everybody's looking for somebody' - I can't be the only person who hears Shalamar's 'A Night to Remember', can I?
The big pink thing he needed help to move in, being lifted by men in black suits and coloured sashes, riffing on Madonna's 'Material Girl' (which itself played with Marilyn Monroe's 'Blondes Have More Fun').The corset just looked like he'd done his back in, the nipple-covers like he had nipple burn from couch to 5k. Sequinned gloves to stop him scratching (elbow length to stop you removing them). And yes, the entrance hall is lined with gold urinals. Swinging on the chandelier (such a 1970's phrase!) echoing Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball'.
And frankly, if your video is supposed to be a sex party, I think I'd rather go to Prince's . That was a man who played with the stereotypes whilst also being sex on legs.
