I’m an hour in. it’s a struggle.

I’m baffled at all the Oscar nominations.

Help me. I want to turn it off.

I enjoyed it - though thought the butt plug bit wasn’t particularly funny or necessary. But I think if you go expecting sci-Fi multiverse genre you’ll be disappointed. It’s quite clearly a film about a menopausal woman who is on the verge of a mental breakdown as she has to do everything everywhere all at once whilst dealing with elderly parent, troublesome teen and useless husband. The multiverse is her imagining all the other lives she could have lived “if only”. Even the sausage fingers universe had a certain alternative appeal.

Yy this.
I didn't cry but I thought it was interesting and sweet. I loved all the film and tv references and thought the cast were amazing.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 29/01/2023 17:14

Loved it. I thought it was inventive, funny, poignant, playful and a was a bit tearful at the end. So much wasted time and energy failing to connect or be happy.

I can see it’s not for everyone but I loved it far more that Parasite, which the world went crazy for.

unclebuck · 29/01/2023 17:17

I thought it was utterly and completely brilliant. I am a first generation immigrant with a teenage daughter and my god, it made me laugh, cry, I LOVED it.

RaininginDarling · 29/01/2023 17:41

There's a really good film in there somewhere struggling to get out. Could have been an hour shorter - and would have benefitted immensely from a damn good script edit. Cast were great though

Got through it but hard slog.
Yes, it reminded me of Turning Red.
It also reminded me of Scott Pilgrim vs the world, which annoyed the hell out of me.
I like the idea of it being about menopause.
Accepting daughter being a lesbian/letting go/coming to terms with meaninglessness or drudgery/finding reasons not to kill yourself...happy, happy, happy. Laid on thick with a trowel.
As for ratatouille, suicide by bagel, butt plugs, sausage fingers and dildo fights...nope.
The only bit I liked was Alpha-Waymond, who I hoped Evelyn would end up with.
I didn't cry about rocks or acceptance. The part where she confronted her father about him just letting her go/going NC resonated. The fact that her husband basically just wanted her to be nice to him resonated.
But whoever did the trailer deserves a Star It made it look far more accessible than it actually was and made me want to see it. It just didn't pay off for me as much as it did for others.

SequinsandStilettos · 05/02/2023 22:23

If they finished shooting in 2020, they had a long time to edit it. It could have done with being a lot tighter and less of a jazz wank in places. The bagel of doom joke remains unfunny.

SequinsandStilettos · 05/02/2023 22:28

Although I could do with an everything bagel right now with ham and cream cheese.

Backstreets · 05/02/2023 22:29

Same OP, I love sci fi, Michelle yeoh, martial arts and even the directors’ previous effort Swiss army man.
absolutely hated this though. Wanted to leave when they were still explaining the plot an hour in but wasn’t alone at the cinema so saw the whole thing (friend loved it and was absolutely baffled at how much I disliked it, but said she knew something was up as I kept checking my watch haha).

Fairislefandango · 05/02/2023 22:32

Ah, the first 'My Opinion And Actual Fact: The Difference Between The Two' fail of the thread.

Did you miss the fact that the poster started that comment with the words 'I think...'? I'd call that a pretty clear statement of opinion rather than fact.

Anyway... I thought the film was ok. Certainly not up to the hype though. I thought it was a lot less clever than it clearly thought it was.

fretaway · 05/02/2023 22:50

It’s a real mixed bag of a film.

The performances of the central characters were excellent and can see why the actors were nominated for awards.

There were some brilliantly funny moments and obviously written with the intention of making the audience think WTF. Some of it was too absurd for me - I couldn’t get over the hot dog fingers! and it was definitely way too long, could have done with a lot more editing and you get a sense of too much self indulgence going on. At one point it got quite tedious.

As said upthread there’s a really good film in there struggling to get out. Overall there were more parts I liked than didn’t.

Luckydip1 · 19/03/2023 18:22

I thought it was pants.

AllOfThemWitches · 19/03/2023 18:24

I enjoyed parts of it but overall found it boring and hard to follow, I think it was too clever for me.

glasshouse · 19/03/2023 18:46

I went to watch it on Prime after reading the comments, only to find I had already watched it earlier in the year - obviously made a great impression on me!

WoolyMammoth55 · 19/03/2023 18:51

I really liked it. I think being in the cinema helped, it's quite a "movie" - big screen and loud sound helped sell it, I can it imagine it not working on a plane! The best films don't IMHO :)

Minimummonday · 19/03/2023 18:53

I didn’t enjoy it. I like sci-fi and independent films etc but found it really meh.

Jewel1968 · 19/03/2023 19:02

I think the problem with it is that it isn't really science fiction and the story about a menopausal woman and her relationships is lost in a sea of absurdity.

DashboardConfessional · 19/03/2023 19:06

It really reminded me of Scott Pilgrim, and I am now too old and cynical for Scott Pilgrim.

WhoAmIWhoAmI24601 · 19/03/2023 19:06

I’ve tried twice to watch it, turned off twice.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 19/03/2023 19:07

Absolutely LOVED it - totally got the message about regrets and what ifs! Thought it was beautiful ❤️

Cherrysoup · 19/03/2023 19:07

Baffled me.

WhereIsMyRefund · 19/03/2023 19:08

I stopped after 40 mins. My adult son did 1.5 h. My husband struggled to the end. What an emperor’s new clothes of a film.

Capturetotalelotion · 19/03/2023 19:17

I used to live in Asia and have lots of Chinese and BBC friends and they all loved it and understood it on another level. I found it hard going but then I didn’t get the Banshees either. Absolutely loved AQOTWF and Living though. Oh and Top Gun Maverick and Avatar. Very pleased Hollywood has survived the pandemic.

mrswhiplington · 19/03/2023 19:17

I'm half an hour in and I've given up. DH and DD are still watching. I don't get it at all. Really wanted to like it.

Ireallydohope · 19/03/2023 19:19

I just fell asleep halfway through it and can't understand why it won so many Oscar's
