To find DH's fawning over our cat irritating?

DH really fawns over our cat. It gives me the ick. He's really soppy about it, but not in a lively, upbeat silly voice way - more in a slow, serious, intense way. He uses a slightly nauseating 'soft' voice and strokes her really slowly with his head tilted on one side. I know IABU but.... bleugh.

I'm always fawning over our cat and my DH doesn't understand it at all!

Ludo19 · 28/01/2023 13:06

Complete songbook for my cats. I also made up film titles in the genre of James Bond.

Dr Purr
The cat with the golden harness
Stinkyclinker
From the vets with love
Catnipball
You only live 9 times
Catnip is forever
Live and let fur (fly)
The cat who loved me
Binraker
For your littertray only

You get the idea I'm bloody nuts 🤪

thanks for this, I just ordered it 😂 my songs are gibberish so I’m curious to see what “proper” cat songs are like 🤪

I am jealous of my husband with our cat
She likes him more

We have two female cats. My DH is obsessed with one of them and the feeling is mutual. As soon as she hears his voice she comes running, ignores the rest of us. She sits on his chest and gives me the evils. She lies between us in bed. He speak to her in a baby voice and I've noticed he gives her cat milk and her sister water. We all have a laugh about it.

Haha the cat milk and water thing

That's so funny and also mean

maras3 · 28/01/2023 13:12

When I was a child there was a popular song, carbon the copy cat by Tex Ritter, frequently played on Children's Favourites on the radio.
The gist of it was that the cat tried to impersonate other animals but 'It always came out mieow'
I adapted the words to use my cat's name (and they've been many over the years) in place of Carbon.
Still singing it over 60 years later. So are my kids and grand kids.

I make up songs about my cat and sing them to her. 😂

Me too. I also talk to her like she's a toddler and am more excited to greet her than I am my husband. I love cats.

all these people that are in love with their cats…

could you explain why?

yes they are cute looking but most cats are extremely self centred and only want to be around humans for food, they come and go as they please, and can turn and scratch at people for no apparent reason.

I admire and am bemused by this level of brass entitlement but it wouldn’t make me all goo goo ga ga over such an animal.

is there something I am missing when it comes to cats??

Where do I start?
Mutual love.
The queen was originally bought to replace DH's beloved cat who had to be pts, but in truth I was always her person. She's loved me from the moment we first met when she was a tiny kitten and when I left the room she used to hide under a cushion until I came back.

Sharing activities
I never sang her songs but during the 2012 Olympics, I made her little event costumes and took photos of her eg in a bikini at the aquatic centre, Hurdles, Gymnastics etc. She's older now but still challenges me to chase her round the house or play hide and seek. She walks without a lead and we have been to see the geese at a neighbouring farm and the cows in the field. She sleeps nestled against my shoulder and spends all day snoozing under my quilt if I'm not there.

She brings me so much joy. DC said that I need to get out more😁

You're misunderstanding me - 'silly' baby-voice soppy - absolutely fine. I do it myself with her all the time. This is not that at all.

@LizzieSiddal - no thank god!! 🤣

I don't understand. Does he sound like he's coming on to her, or something? Trying to seduce her?

picklemewalnuts · 28/01/2023 13:39

DH gets irritated by me and DS fawning over the dog. I hear him baby talking when no one's around though. In between calling him 'numpty' and 'stupid dog'.

To be fair the dog is both exceptionally adorable and remarkably stupid. Both approaches are perfectly reasonable.

picklemewalnuts · 28/01/2023 13:40

@wednesdaynamesep it'll be a cat register croon, I expect. Slow and purry 😂

BadgerHeed · 28/01/2023 13:41

Just be thankful that's the only other pussy he's stroking 😉

picklemewalnuts · 28/01/2023 13:42

@Notjusta it's probably a sign he's actually really relaxed, so a good endorphin type stress release thing. That's why we have pets, so that happens. Lowers blood pressure, relaxes us, and the pitch and speed of his voice lowers right down. Like when you get a massage.

ghostyslovesheets · 28/01/2023 12:30

@BlueKaftan yup I do this to all six of them - then I ask them if they liked it as I wrote it just for them - I get slightly offended if they don’t reply!
’ I like kittens they don’t wear mittens they have tiny toe beans and their claws are quite mean’

they also have different ‘voices’ when I talk for them - one sounded a lot like Borat - I miss him

i sound quiet mad!

My cats (I've only had one at a time though) have always had quite posh voices - a bit like Shere Khan in Jungle Book (voiced by George Sanders) - only female I guess. This clip at about 1m 36 is exactly how she is.

I think loving an animal that may treat you with barely concealed contempt is the sign of a true animal lover. They didn't ask to be domesticated but now we have done that then we have duty to take good care of them without that being contingent on them giving us anything in return. I really struggle to understand people who think pets owe them anything.

I'm really happy to see so many people singing to their pets, it really warms my heart.

Sexypyjamas · 28/01/2023 14:57

Animallover87 · 28/01/2023 10:48

It would make me more attracted to him.

This.
@BlueKaftan loving this!
I have never, ever disliked a cat person (or cats, or DH's that talk all silly to cats).
Even on MN, there's always more craic on the litter tray section it seems. Some of the funniest posts have been by people talking about their cats little bastards imo.

harrassedmumto3 · 28/01/2023 15:40

I talk to my Shih Tzu in a Chinese accent.
I am Scottish BlushBlushBlush

TCMolly · 28/01/2023 15:45

My husband is the same with our cats and so am I.
I thought it was normal, our cats mean the world to us.

DonkeyOatie · 28/01/2023 15:57

My ginger Tom hates being cuddled but pops downstairs for a "chat" most evenings. He is very vocal and I always ask him his opinion on whatever is in the news. He absolutely knows what I am saying and meows back.
I love him more than I have any human male.

To put it simply - you aren’t missing something, you are missing everything. Cats are awesome!

Furries · 28/01/2023 16:20

I sing to mine to.

Furry cat, furry cat, does whatever a furry cat does - sung to the tune of SpiderPig.

oakleaffy · 28/01/2023 16:22

Jealous?
It is possible for partners to be extremely jealous of a cat or dog.

Very True!

JudgeRudy · 28/01/2023 16:28

Where is there any indication that OP is jealous. We all have different internal boundaries where certain behaviours/mannerisms give you thr 'ick'. I friends brother used to eat his food in what l can only describe as a sensual manner. Another friend breastfed her school aged child. Adults calling their children Baby Girl...I'd imagine it's a similar feeling. Definitely not jealousy, more low level repulsion.
I get it

@BlueKaftan I make up songs and sing them to my dog.
Latest is “Sausage dog, sausage dog, sausaaage dooog, you are brown and you look like a log”. It sounds much better in real life than written down.

I'm singing this one to the football chant "Here we go, here we go, here we go"
