I have a very unusual name which I dislike.
I know the names I am considering for DD2 are ‘common’ but I love them.

I love Florence and Flo/Florrie

I love Matilda and like Tilda / Tilly/ Matty

Love Penelope but not pen/penny/nelly

I do love Rose but wonder is it enough ???? I had considered Primrose but not sure !!!!!

What do you think?
please help as baby arriving asap!

I have always loved Emilia but worry there are too many!

Would you like Florence Rose? I rather like it.

PenPenPen · 27/01/2023 20:36

@PenPenPen1 👋🏻 to a fellow sufferer. I’m mid forties and have only ever met one other in person. I think we’re a pretty rare breed.

"Spend a penny" was a popular one at school. Or "penny for your thoughts" or "lady penelope" from thunderbirds How could I have forgotten about these?!

And @Pocketfullofdogtreats Yeah, what PenPenPen1 said! 🤨

Lostmyway86 · 27/01/2023 20:38

Florence all day long. Florrie is beautiful

highfidelity · 27/01/2023 20:42

I love Penelope (it's got such a lovely mouth feel when spoken). It doesn't need a nickname either, nor do any names for that matter, but maybe that's just me.

I honestly have never understood the whole need to consider a nickname when picking a name for a baby. As someone with a three syllable name, no-one has ever shortened it or used a nickname for me - I have always been called by my full name - my mother was always very insistent on this. Am mentioning this because I like that I have never been given a nickname even though there are several that my name can be shortened to.

MissWings · 27/01/2023 20:46

They’re literally all fab (definitely not Primrose though).

I love them all which is highly unusual on mumsnet. Some beastly names on here 🤦‍♀️.

ittakes2 · 27/01/2023 20:50

Two things

  • if you do a long name like penelope it will get shortened by friends and you don't llike the shortened version so consider that.
  • whatever name you choose will be used for them in school and on legal documents like the nhs letters etc. If you like the shortened name call them that. I had this for my daughter - didn't even tell her her techinical legal name as always called her by the shortened name. Until she came home from school at the age of 5 saying her teacher said her name is actuall XXXX not XX.
Mamai90 · 27/01/2023 20:51

Florence or Matilda. Rose is OK, I don't like Penelope, it's like

I do really like Emilia too though.

Mamai90 · 27/01/2023 20:51

*likely to get shortened.

StoneofDestiny · 27/01/2023 20:53

Florence is the most popular name of 2022 in England I believe, so there will be a lot of Florence's' around.........Rose is lovely. (Penelope - no). Matilda - not keen.

Timesawastin · 27/01/2023 20:55

Rose. Not Primrose as I think of Mrs Shipman...

Timesawastin · 27/01/2023 20:57

@Lostmyway86

Really? Makes me think "middle aged tea lady"

Infinitebows · 27/01/2023 21:53

Emilia Rose is such a pretty name. Florence is lovely too. Actually don't mind Matilda either but literally so many female dogs around my area are called Tilly it would put me off that one especially if people insisted on shortening it.

forageintheforest · 27/01/2023 21:56

Re Nel as an abbreviation for Penelope, I thought it was a shortened version of Eleanor.

incrediblehux · 27/01/2023 22:01

All lovely names but I have a 4 year old Penelope so I'm biased. She's not a Penny although sometimes a Pen (she's 4). Only one in the school. I'd recommend.

What sounds good with your family name?

Maybe wait and see what she looks like to you when she comes out.

PrincessPaloma · 27/01/2023 22:04

Flo or Tilda

EnglishMuffins · 27/01/2023 22:06

Florence
Rosalie
Iris
Phoebe
Willow

DoraSpenlow · 27/01/2023 22:13

Please not Florence. It is one of my middle names and when other pupils at school found out I was teased and called Florrie for the rest of my time there. I hate it and even now leave off of forms unless absolutely necessary.

My thoughts exactly. I was the bane of my school days being called Florrie.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 27/01/2023 22:19

PenPenPen1 · 27/01/2023 20:00

HEY.

You wanna say that to my face?

What kinda name is Pocket full of dog treats anyway?

😂

It's the name Penny I hate, not the person. Unless you're my former boss, Penny 😉

sevenbyseven · 27/01/2023 22:21

I love Rose and Matilda.

Not keen on Penelope but if you do go for that I how about Nell as an alternative nickname? 🙂

noworklifebalance · 27/01/2023 22:22

Florence & Matilda are very common names around my way.
Really like Penelope

GargleGargoyle · 27/01/2023 22:23

Emilia or Florence

Zanatdy · 27/01/2023 22:24

Definitely Florence. Not Penelope as someone will shorten to Penny, including herself maybe when older. So don’t chose a name you don’t like the shortened version of

Judijudi · 27/01/2023 22:25

I like Tulsa and Tilly none of the rest for me but it’s up to you anyway
