Ohhhhhlalala · 27/01/2023 16:16

I have a very unusual name which I dislike.
I know the names I am considering for DD2 are ‘common’ but I love them.

I love Florence and Flo/Florrie

I love Matilda and like Tilda / Tilly/ Matty

Love Penelope but not pen/penny/nelly

I do love Rose but wonder is it enough ???? I had considered Primrose but not sure !!!!!

What do you think?
please help as baby arriving asap!

I have always loved Emilia but worry there are too many!

OP posts:

rose!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/01/2023 19:06

I think naming her Matilda, Rose, or Florence comes with the risk of her being one of 3 or 4 with the same name in her class when she starts school. It certainly would where I live.

I don't know any baby Penelope's but if you don't like the nn's then it's not worth it

CoffeeChocolateWine · 27/01/2023 19:06

Love Florence, Matilda and Penelope. Not so keen on Rose.

I wouldn't go for Penelope if you don't like the shortened forms. I know a few Penelopes (including my DSis) and they ALL get shortened to Penny or Pen.

I think Flo is a lovely nn for Florence. I'm not sure about Florrie or Flossie (which I've also come across as a nn).

I would pick Matilda (and I did as my DD's middle name). I think Tilly or Tilda are lovely too.

Good luck OP!

harrassedmumto3 · 27/01/2023 19:08

Primrose is godawful. Rose is fine. Florence is nice but I hate the twee shortened versions. Matilda is boring. I like Penelope too.

It's not from the city. It's from the Latin for 'flourishing'.

(FWIW, the city name has also been anglicised like that for centuries, so you might as well complain the OP is using 'Matilda' rather than the properly Germanic 'Mathildis').

😮did not know that.

PenPenPen · 27/01/2023 19:11

I’ve name changed for this. I’ve got one of those names, take a wild guess which one.

There isn’t a snowball’s chance that it won’t be shortened to Penny or Pen. Do you have any idea how many ‘jokes’ there are about this name? Any man old enough to remember pre decimalisation (it’s always men for some reason) will call her tuppence and will get very offended if she ever rolls her eyes, yawns or sighs at them. Adults will sing Penny Lane and Penny Lover at her. You’ve got Penelope Pitstop, Pennies from Heaven, Bad Penny, Bic, Biro and Fountain Pen, every denomination of coin (she’s not worth that much etc), and that’s without people pronouncing it Pen-e-lope. It is so incredibly tiresome. And everyone thinks they’re being totally original. I would give you my house if you could come up with something I haven’t heard a million times already.

Don’t do it!

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 27/01/2023 19:11

Penelope, just call her that or P don’t like Penny or Pen .
Matilda is lovely but I know quite a few under 5s named that .

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2023 19:12

I have a Mathilda who has always used her full name or Tilda. Suddenly, on the cusp of adulthood, she's Mattie which I rather like.

OoooohMatron · 27/01/2023 19:12

Rose or Matilda. I don't like the other 2

SarahAndQuack · 27/01/2023 19:13

CrimsonPostBox · 27/01/2023 19:08

😮did not know that.

It's nicer, isn't it?!

There are Roman Florentias and Florentiuses before there was a city called Firenze. It just becomes 'Florence' from 'Florentia' because it's common for a Latin 'tia' sound to soften into an English 's' sound. Like Constantia and Constance or Gratia and Grace.

Ah - that's interesting. I think I must have assumed it was after the city because of Florence Nightingale (who was named Florence because she was born there).

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 27/01/2023 19:16

Florence or Rose. I quite like Penelope but loathe Penny with a passion.

reddwarfgeek · 27/01/2023 19:16

Florence and Matilda are lovely.
Penelope ok but will get shortened.
Not keen on Rose as it's a shortened version of my name and I always thought it was old fashioned.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2023 19:20

Rose is great.

Matilda and Emilia are really nice.

Florence is a bit twee

Don’t pick Penelope if you don’t like Penny

Primrose is freaking awful

Rachaelrachael · 27/01/2023 19:21

Love Matilda and Rose!

Pipsflik · 27/01/2023 19:22

Florence.

Hesma · 27/01/2023 19:22

I know all of these from my girls school. Rose and Penelope are the least common where I live

LCforlife · 27/01/2023 19:22

I love Florence and Matilda.

LCforlife · 27/01/2023 19:23

Also love Primrose, much more than Rose.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 27/01/2023 19:24

Rose. The others are really common and rose can be short for lots of different names like rosalind, rosita, rosemary, etc

Babynamehelp626 · 27/01/2023 19:25

I think Rose is beautiful

Maybe don't pick one where your don't like the nicknames as others might use them without thinking and your kids might end up preferring the nickname!

wishing3 · 27/01/2023 19:26

All lovely but Rose is my favourite.

iwasthewalrus · 27/01/2023 19:26

I‘m not keen on Penelope but love the others. Have you considered Flora or Rosa? They both have a similar vibe to your list.

MaryShelley1818 · 27/01/2023 19:28

Love Florence and Primrose.

Matilda and Rose are really common/well used.
Not keen on Penny so wouldn't use Penelope.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 27/01/2023 19:29

What about Rosemary? Nicer than Primrose.
Elizabeth?
Martha
