I have a very unusual name which I dislike.
I know the names I am considering for DD2 are ‘common’ but I love them.

I love Florence and Flo/Florrie

I love Matilda and like Tilda / Tilly/ Matty

Love Penelope but not pen/penny/nelly

I do love Rose but wonder is it enough ???? I had considered Primrose but not sure !!!!!

What do you think?
please help as baby arriving asap!

I have always loved Emilia but worry there are too many!

Rose, beautiful, simple and classic. No need for anything longer.

ReadtheReviews · 27/01/2023 17:08

I like Rosie as a nn for Rose.
Matilda you don't have any objections to, so why aren't you sold on it? It's lovely and pref to Amelia. Not as common and without that 'meal' sound.
Penelope I love and like Nellie as a nn.
What about similar classic not common:
Ginevra nn Ginny
Clarissa nn Lissy
Colette nn Letty

Well my eldest is Matilda so I’d obviously go for that one, I think it’s a lovely name and (like you) I like all the possible abbreviations. Also have a friend who’s daughter is Florence - it’s quite a popular name round here.

Rose is beautiful and classic but maybe a bit overused? Penelope is also lovely but I’d steer clear if you don’t like the nicknames as it’s likely to get shortened. Good luck!

PumpkinDart · 27/01/2023 18:49

I love Matilda, Rose and Florence. Less fussed on Penelope. There's a Florence in my son's class and she's such a little sweetie, none of the class shorten her name though she's Florence to them all.

DingDongDenny · 27/01/2023 18:51

I like Florence and Rose, also together

Emelene · 27/01/2023 18:52

I have a little Florence, I still love it!

Matilda and Rose were on my list too, I think we have similar taste. I don’t think you can go wrong.

Shampern · 27/01/2023 18:52

Lovely choices. I like them all.

SarahAndQuack · 27/01/2023 18:53

I think Penelope is really pretty. FWIW, my DD has a name that has nicknames DP and I really dislike. We know DD may at some stage decide she loves them! But we figured it was worth the risk. So far, DD is 5 and is absolutely clear that her name is her full name and she's not keen on nicknames. If she changes her mind later full power to her, but maybe she won't.

Humptydumptyfellapart · 27/01/2023 18:54

My DD is Florence/flo and I literally love it.
Matilda was a close second

They're a good selection of names though. But if you don't like the shortening of penelope. Probably best to drop that one 😊

I love Matilda, Florence & Penelope. Much prefer Primrose to Rose.

Cherrysoup · 27/01/2023 18:54

I hate Penelope.

CrimsonPostBox · 27/01/2023 18:54

Florence annoys me because it's the Anglicised version of a foreign city. Silly of me I know.

BigMadAdrian · 27/01/2023 18:54

All are good. Penelope is my favourite.

Suzi888 · 27/01/2023 18:55

Emilia Rose

I’m not a fan of Florence, knew a bloke named Florence so perhaps that’s why!

JamSandle · 27/01/2023 18:55

Penelope

SarahAndQuack · 27/01/2023 18:56

Oh, sorry, and I meant to say - I like Rose; I think Primrose is a bit twee. I think Emilia is a beautiful name (I would have thought about as common as Florence and sorry, for me, Florence is too aunty-ish and period-ish). Emilia makes me think of Shakespeare and it has nice associations with an early women writer (Aemilia Lanyer).

I like the name Florence, but do agree with this! Firenze is so nice too, no idea why it needed to be anglicised (although I guess it would be more of a boy's name).

Glances to the children to my right. Sees Penelope & Matilda….

I’d go with either of those Grin

I would Matilda but only became im currently addicted to DCI Matilda Darke series lol

TheKeatingFive · 27/01/2023 18:58

I love Emilia. Florence is okay. Not keen on the others.

Topsyturveymam · 27/01/2023 18:59

I like Florence and Matilda the best.
My friends shortens her daughters name to Floren, which is sweet.

It's not from the city. It's from the Latin for 'flourishing'.

(FWIW, the city name has also been anglicised like that for centuries, so you might as well complain the OP is using 'Matilda' rather than the properly Germanic 'Mathildis').

Greysofa · 27/01/2023 19:00

Matilda

W0tnow · 27/01/2023 19:00

Matilda followed by Bethany.

Overthehill123 · 27/01/2023 19:01

If you like Emilia go for that one, where I am all of these names particularly Rose, Florence are more popular for babies now than Emila. Personally I think Matilda is nicest😊

IhearyouClemFandango · 27/01/2023 19:01

Rose. I only know one who has it as a first name, all the others are middle names so it isn't hugely over used.

Also like Florence, but veeeeerrrry popular. I know a few Matildas too.
