I have a very unusual name which I dislike.
I know the names I am considering for DD2 are ‘common’ but I love them.

I love Florence and Flo/Florrie

I love Matilda and like Tilda / Tilly/ Matty

Love Penelope but not pen/penny/nelly

I do love Rose but wonder is it enough ???? I had considered Primrose but not sure !!!!!

What do you think?
please help as baby arriving asap!

I have always loved Emilia but worry there are too many!

What about Rosemary? Nicer than Primrose.
Elizabeth?
Martha

Thegirlwithnousername · 27/01/2023 19:34

I have a Matilda Grace, She refers to herself as Tilda (She's 3) so you would need to love Tilda too as I think Matilda is hard for them to grasp or has been for her and she's just used to Tilda now.

ViscountBiscuit · 27/01/2023 19:35

Primrose or Matilda. I know too many Florence’s and most kids I know called Penelope get it shortened every time, especially by their friends. Rose is very very popular at the moment.

ViscountBiscuit · 27/01/2023 19:36

In fact I prefer Primrose.

purplepencilcase · 27/01/2023 19:36

They're all lovely.

EsmeSusanOgg · 27/01/2023 19:39

Florence or Penelope.

IAmTheWalrus85 · 27/01/2023 19:39

It would be Matilda or Rose for me.

Penelope is one of those names that will always get shortened.

yoshiblue · 27/01/2023 19:41

Florence

I have a boy, Florian and his nickname is Flo!

SarahAndQuack · 27/01/2023 19:45

BigMadAdrian · 27/01/2023 19:16

Ah - that's interesting. I think I must have assumed it was after the city because of Florence Nightingale (who was named Florence because she was born there).

TBF I'm sure she made it much more popular! But if I were thinking of using it as a name, I'd want to be thinking about the original meaning, just because it's prettier.

Ooh, yes, Rosemary is a beautiful name. I'd love for that to come back.

Birchtree1 · 27/01/2023 19:49

We have a Matilda….Still love the name. But she is generally a Tilly but has recently decided (age 5) she wants to be a Matilda at school. School has been great to adjust so it’s Matilda. At school now but still Tilly at home (as she requested)

funnyoldonion · 27/01/2023 19:50

Well you put Florence first which makes me think it’s your favourite and it is beautiful. All of them go with Rose but don’t use up your two favourites in case one day she has a little sister :)

PenPenPen1 · 27/01/2023 19:55

@PenPenPen oh hello. I also have one of those names. Hmmmm..a mystery

"Spend a penny" was a popular one at school. Or "penny for your thoughts" or "lady penelope" from thunderbirds

I tried to get people to call me Nellie but it never happened

I didn't realise Penelope was making a comeback. I always felt my name was unusual at school but that was 25 years ago!

WinniePig · 27/01/2023 19:56

Florence and Rose are lovely.

MerryPenopause · 27/01/2023 19:58

Rose or Matilda for me

really dislike the other 2

DrManhattan · 27/01/2023 19:59

Are they all a bit common now, as in popular and over used?

PenPenPen1 · 27/01/2023 20:00

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 27/01/2023 19:16

Florence or Rose. I quite like Penelope but loathe Penny with a passion.

HEY.

You wanna say that to my face?

What kinda name is Pocket full of dog treats anyway?

😂

crosspusscrossstitcher · 27/01/2023 20:04

Matilda.

I think it means "battle maiden" or something similar.

I do like a strong female name.

mommatoone · 27/01/2023 20:05

I think Penelope snd Florence are beautiful names. You could use Rose as a middle name with these?.
Whatever you decide.good luck OP.

RoseBucket · 27/01/2023 20:06

I prefer my name Rose, my sisters are called Hyacinth, or perhaps you’d prefer Daisy or Violet?

Pemba · 27/01/2023 20:09

Rose is my favourite out of the 4 in your OP, but if you think it's not enough how about a longer 'Rose..' name, there are so many. Rosa (I prefer that to Rose, more unusual), Rosemary, Rosalind, Rosamund, Rosanna, Rosalie, Rosita, Roisin etc. Not that keen on Primrose though, it's a bit prissy.

I quite like Matilda. Emmeline instead of Emilia?

I would say, like others, probably don't choose Penelope since it's a long name and you seem to dislike all the short forms.

Tiredmamma8 · 27/01/2023 20:09

I love all these names.

my child has a long name and I didn’t like the nickname that’s most common with it. But actually it’s grown on me. Maybe because the people who say it say it with so much love. I still use their full name but I don’t mind so much if people shorten it.

Also I love Penny for a nickname. I think it’s cool.

OrangePomander · 27/01/2023 20:10

Florence is great

e323 · 27/01/2023 20:12

My daughter is Florence and I still love it. I think we got lucky when we named her as don't actually know any others with her name.

However it is getting popular again now I've noticed!

We nn to Florrie and I love it and she loves it. I don't like Flo tho🙃

MuchAdoAboutNiente · 27/01/2023 20:17

I think they are all great but I'm biased as my Florence is 10.

I love her name so much and when she was born there wasn't anyone else we knew with that name nor in her nursery or school year.

Fast forward to now and it's incredibly popular.

Rose is a beautiful name and I think will really stand the test of time.
