Bloody parking charge

I went to a car park and my 4 year old went batshit on the way in. I quickly parked and got her out and calmed her down. I looked at the car, and one wheel was on the white line. Tbh I couldn't be bothered with putting DD back and reparking so I just dashed into the shop. Came out 5 minutes later and found a ticket on my car for £100.
I got home and appealed it but got a standard letter back saying appeal has been denied, but with no rationale. I assume they send the same wording to everyone. There's no way of contacting them.
My options are pay for the fine now or appeal to the ombudsman but run the risk of paying more if that's denied.
If it's any use, it's Excel parking. And the car park is in cramlington.
Would you appeal or just (begrudgingly) pay?

I'd pay - and in future check your position before you turn off the engine and take your daughter out of her car seat.

Obviously I don't know how much room there was in this particular car park but I have often had difficulty in finding parking spaces because of careless/selfish parking by other drivers.

KillingLoneliness · 26/01/2023 16:53

I didn’t know you could get fined for that, seems over the top, especially if you weren’t even over the line!
You should see the parking at my local Tesco, the amount of cars that are left taking up two spaces or just parking in front of the store but I’ve never seen anyone get a ticket for it.

Singinghollybob · 26/01/2023 17:23

I'd do some research and look on moneysavingexpert and pepipoo forums first. I contested a private parking charge a couple of years ago on a technicality after they refused my appeal, but it took me a lot of hours work looking into it all.

Depends how much time and motivation you have to try and fight it, but if you want to try you need to do it properly and formally, using correct defences.
Do not just ignore and not pay.

malmi · 26/01/2023 19:04

Wish more car parks enforced this tbh

I always thought the rule was you could park on the lines?

As long as any part of your tyre is touching the line, then they cant give you a ticket?

Or is that just the council?

Might be tennis you're thinking of 😂

turquoisegem · 27/01/2023 10:51

I think in this instance you just have to pay it but it does make me angry when you read things like that elderly gentleman who had innocently put in a (o) instead of (0) when entering his number plate and his appeal was rejected just because technically they could still have him for that.

Hillarious · 26/01/2023 16:17

How many of us have had to drive past a potential parking spot, because the poor parking doesn't leave you enough room to get your car in there?

My thoughts too

Dbank · 27/01/2023 11:03

I know it's irritating, but if you wouldn't do it again, you can see the point of the fine.

DDivaStar · 27/01/2023 11:05

You were fined because you were parked on the white line because you were parked on the white line, not sure what you're appealing.

Brefugee · 27/01/2023 11:08

play stupid games, win stupid prizes. You took a gamble and lost, OP, so you now have to decide if you'Re going to spend more time/money fighting it or cough up and park better in future.

For pp who said it's a non-issue, actually it is. When one person parks like this, it forces the next and the next and the next car to park slightly over. And the car park owners can't know who the first one was that forced the others to park incorrectly, so they are the only winners.

GoodChat · 27/01/2023 11:09

You knew you'd parked badly and you couldn't be arsed to move. It's the risk you take.

To the poster telling you to ignore it: even if that was sound advice (it isn't), you've already interacted with the company now so the advice doesn't stand.

purplecorkheart · 27/01/2023 11:10

I am not sure on what grounds you could appeal. You were aware you parked in the white line and you chose not to move. The fact your child was upset sadly is not their problem.

balloontrip · 27/01/2023 11:13

I got home and appealed it but got a standard letter back saying appeal has been denied, but with no rationale

Surely it's because you have no grounds to appeal, because you were incorrectly parked?

Brefugee · 27/01/2023 11:14

How many of us have had to drive past a potential parking spot, because the poor parking doesn't leave you enough room to get your car in there?

this gives me the absolute rage. I had to drive out of a car park once, because the sensors indicated spaces, but bad parking rendered them unusable. and then my exit ticket didn't work because they wanted me to pay. I actually walked round with the attendant and he let me out.

As a result of this (and because they went to the expense of slightly widening the spaces to accommodate newer cars which are wider) the car park now charges double for cars that mean the space next to them can't be used. This is widely signposted, and i have seen people arguing the toss with the staff, but in the end they have to pay. The longer they argue, the more they pay because the increments in that car park are 10 minutes.

User1794329709 · 27/01/2023 11:15

i would pay it as you were in the wrong and took a gamble, is it less if you pay quickly.

Mammma91 · 27/01/2023 11:17

£100?!? Wow! I have a bloody cheek to still be bitter over my £35 parking charge I had to pay a few months back!! (Completely 100% my fault I was parked incorrectly but I had to stop to dispense emergency medicine for my DC) but I was still liable to pay because I wasn’t parked properly.

Sorry op, I think you may have to grit your teeth and pay it - I’m shocked it £100 though!

Coffeellama · 27/01/2023 11:18

Its very petty and annoying, but you have no right to appeal that I can see. You parked on the line and new it but took a risk, stupid as it is you have to pay.

turquoisegem · 27/01/2023 11:21

is it less if you pay quickly.
Yes its cheaper if you pay straight away or they fine you more if you try to appeal to try and get you not to.

Adrieeeeenne · 27/01/2023 11:54

That’s so annoying for you, especially when you see the truly awful parking/driving others do. I’d say pay this one from the annual ‘idiot tax’ allowance (as per Josh Widdicombe). The idea of having X amount of money allowed each year for totally self-inflicted things - like parking tickets/lost keys/forgotten to cancel subscriptions - set me free from agonising over it. These things happen to everyone (except the always amazingly unsympathetic and presumably perfect Mumsnetters 😂)

Chickenly · 27/01/2023 11:58

BabyOnBoard90 · 26/01/2023 14:43

Private car park company? Oh you definitely don't have to pay and can tell them where to stick.

I spanked Euro Car Parks in court a few months ago

This ridiculous bollocks is trotted out in every thread about parking fines. They can take you to court and get a CCJ to make you pay it. You did the thing, you knew the rule, you chose to continue. I also don’t know how you got out and got your DD out before realising you’d parked on the line.

The rationale behind the fine was that you did do the thing they say you did .
Not sure about the rationale for appeal though.

It’s crappy OP and it might seem unfair but unfortunately you were in breach of the rules and the fine is legally justified. It is also very annoying in a busy car park when one of the few spaces left is inaccessible due to bad parking
As for anyone who says ignore it it’s not them who will face the consequences if it’s bad advice are they?

Oh bollocks is it? Lol just say you couldn't do it and move on. Don't be a hater just cause someone else has the brains to combat what you cannot.

That doesn’t show why it was dismissed though
