Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?

There are 4 of us. Once a week we have lots of different types of salads with French bread and pate as our evening meal. We love pate. It gets eaten at breakfast on toast in the days afterwards.

We never managed to eat it all before we’re scared of it. Why don’t they sell it in usable portions?

If you think about how much pate you get in a restaurant as a starter...

We don't get through a packet of meat pate easily as it's just me who eats it really, DH will have a bit with toast - so I rarely buy it. But if there was four of us eating it - it would probably go in sitting - maybe two...

Mackerel or kipper pate one of us can finish in one meal....

Mamette · 26/01/2023 12:00

You say love pâté but you are clearly spreading it .05mm if it lasts that long between 4 of you.

Eat it properly! Live a little! Be free from fear!

wendywoopywoo222 · 26/01/2023 12:06

Yep I can easy.

Four slices or toast and that's it gone.

Fine bedtime snack 😊😊😊

What a weird post.

Are you honestly saying a family of 4 can't use up one pack of pate over a week or so?

Is this the new Mumsnet chicken?!

😂😂

Rhythmisadancer · 26/01/2023 12:22

I would like to vote twice for YABU, as not only are clearly out of your mind for not spreading it an inch thick adding cucumber and lots of salt and pepper, but your post made me leap out of my chair and drag the dog up to our local Coop craving pate, and they didn't have any, so I bought a horrid hoisin duck wrap, which was minging, and now you've ruined my day!

we as a family really like it - it’s literally the once a week treat centre piece meal with salad on a Saturday night. We look forward to it. We also eat it for days afterwards as I said in my OP. Eventually the outside is grey and the inside is pink and I’m scared it’s not safe based on the packet instructions but also my nose.

But surely every time you go into the fridge once it's open you slice a chunk off and eat it , without bread or crackers, whilst standing in front of the fridge - is that not the law? That is where you are going wrong.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/01/2023 12:28

It’s pate not marmite, you don’t need to smear it lightly. Slather it on so thick you leave teeth marks.

AdelaideRo · 26/01/2023 12:54

I"ve just used one pack of sainsbury's pate to make 6 rolls for lunches (I freeze them) and two slices of toast for lunch today.

The portions on my toast today were generous as I wanted to finish it but I'm slightly incredulous that six of you can't manage to eat in across two meals (dinner and breakfast/ lunch the next day).

ChristmasKraken · 26/01/2023 13:05

Has the word pate lost all meaning now to anyone else? Pate pate pate pate...

OP says for "days" afterwards, so at least 3 meals... including a "centrepiece" meal which she describes a treat.

So, they must just be marmiting it on their bread and toast.

GideonSmideon · 26/01/2023 13:15

I don't get how it can last so long. (But I'm odd and like pate and strawberry jam sandwiches)

Slowingdownagain · 26/01/2023 13:16

One packet of pate does you for a family meal and so many days afterwards that it goes grey? How little do you use on your bread? This is veyr strange unless you are buying huge packets of it.

00100001 · 26/01/2023 13:20

I'm going to do an experiment when i get home and work out how much a scraping of pate is on a normal slice of bread and work out how many slices I could get out of 2/3 of a tub, to work out just how much or little OPs family are eating...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/01/2023 13:30

Maybe they all just gaze at it longingly.

You know what surprises me the most. That 10% of the votes are YANBU. Loons.

BertaHoon · 26/01/2023 13:44

Gather round, gather round my children.

We'll be feasting speshul tonight on the pat-ay.

Steady now. Just a sniff. That's right.

Eat yer porridge.

BertaHoon · 26/01/2023 13:48

Someone tagged me in a cembert ? Camembert salad recipe - thank you. I shall seek it out again and look forward to it!

Pimp my salad. Not with pa-ay though.

BarrelOfOtters · 26/01/2023 13:51

how to eat pate

Within the realm of bona fide patés, there are certain rules that it is imperative you observe:

Bacon-wrapping a paté always gives it an unfortunate leathery exterior.

Dried fruits are never welcome in a savoury dish.

Stick to traditional French herbs and spices of the garlic and thyme ilk, none of this mulled nutmeg, cloves and ginger nonsense. This is not a Christmas cake.

Ideally, confine yourself to one boozy ingredient and use it sparingly. That Grand
Marnier or port should be a seasoning. This is not a meat-flavoured shot. It should not ignite near a naked flame.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/01/2023 14:04

Why not make it in the quantities you'll actually eat?

Either that or get a cat. You'll be lucky to get one meal out of it then.

melj1213 · 26/01/2023 14:38

JFC how can a family of four not get through a 175g pack of paté in the course of a meal?!

I've had bariatric surgery so I can only eat tiny portions as I physically can't eat more and I have 40g of paté with some crackers as a snack or twice as much if I'm having it as a meal ... 4×40g = 160g so even I'd manage to eat a whole pack in 4 days (with 15g left over for the occasional dip into the fridge where I just scoop a bit out with my finger) even if I only had it for a snack once a day. Four people having it as the "centrepiece" of a main meal should easily manage a single tub in a night, of you're not then you're doing it wrong.
