Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?

There are 4 of us. Once a week we have lots of different types of salads with French bread and pate as our evening meal. We love pate. It gets eaten at breakfast on toast in the days afterwards.

We never managed to eat it all before we’re scared of it. Why don’t they sell it in usable portions?

Anyone else really want pate after reading this thread? I actually walked to the shop solely to buy some for lunch today after seeing it this morning. Half the pack gone already and I imagine the other half won't see out the end of the day!

potniatheron · 26/01/2023 15:18

I'm not going to comment on your judgement as to what constitutes a reasonable amount of pate for a main meal, as others have already done so, fulsomely. I'll just say that you mustn't be frightened of two tone pate. It is not sentient, it won't jump out the fridge and hit you. It won't even laugh at you for eating such miserly portions of it. I eat wekk old two tone pate all the time and I'm alive. Well, I do have diarrhoea at least once a week, but nevermind that.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/01/2023 15:23

I haven't read the whole thread, @pyracantha - but you can freeze pate.

I feel like this about soft cheese which seems to grow mould while you look at it. Which is why I buy the individual serving packs of Philidephia.

Doesn't last long enough here!
I have it on bagels thickly and then use it up stirred into sauces or as a spread instead of butter on sandwiches/rolls

Obviously OP works for the Pate Promotion Marketing Board (PPMB) and has been charged with ensuring all Mumsnetters are filled with longing and desire for this tasty treat!

Her bonus is definitely in the bag; sales are up already today as intrepid women make a beeline for the baguettes, crackers, salads of many varieties, olives, pardon peppers, Camembert etc, etc that must accompany the delicious centrepiece.

For vegetarians, can I recommend Tartex pâté in a tube for that 70s vibe!
For a special occasion try the M&S organic mushroom pate, I love it, so obviously my local M&S has stopped stocking it as they do with everything I particularly like.

OP I think one of these vegetarian suggestions could really spice up your Saturday treat spread. Note that the pate is piled high in the serving suggestion for Tartex! Enjoy!

I love the stuff and nobody else here does, so I've been freezing part-used packs for ages. Just ordered two packs for my next delivery as I couldn't choose between Brussels and Ardennes. Mmmmm.

OneTC · 26/01/2023 15:55

When we go on holiday in France we always buy a pack or two a day to eat while we're cooking dinner.

I actually went and bought some off the back of this thread, was walking through borough market earlier when I first read it.

It's already finished Grin

Iwantmyoldnameback · 26/01/2023 15:57

I don't think the OPs family like it really, it reminds me of the people who feel they have to drink wine on holiday so the hotel label the bottle and bring it out every night.

I love pate and wine but I'm a greedy bitch. It's not a main meal though.

ShowsLikeThese · 26/01/2023 16:34

Ah OP, you're getting a hard time. Very entertaining, mind!

I'm in your camp - we really enjoy pate, but not in large quantities. This family of 5 eats it with crackers as a starter or for part lunch with other meats and cheeses. We wouldn't finish a full pack between us either.

zingally · 26/01/2023 16:39

I can easily demolish half a packet with one of those par-baked baguettes!

liveforsummer · 26/01/2023 16:43

I have this issue but I'm the only one in the house that eats it. Morrisons do small portions of it in their deli section for as little as 40p

Snowybeach · 26/01/2023 16:50

I don’t buy a whole pack to myself but Morrisons do a teeny tiny pack in the deli for 50p.

I am careful with pate after the time I left it in a hot conservatory for the afternoon and came back and ate it. 🤮

FlorencenotRatchet · 26/01/2023 17:05

I have been fancying pâté since this thread started.
Just bought some and demolished a third of it with some crusty bread!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/01/2023 17:18

If I recall correctly...

Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled pate.
A pack of pickled pate Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled pate,
Where's the pack of pickled pate Peter Piper picked?

One must assume he ate the whole pack of pate!
(Recollections may vary.)

Same. I think this is a reverse psychology thread by Big Pâté to make us all go and buy pâté.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/01/2023 17:24

Depends on the size of the 'pack'.

Whycanineverever · 26/01/2023 17:27

I'm now really missing the sainsburys pigs in blankets pate they only bring out at Xmas.

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/01/2023 19:09

For the benefit of all, and to avoid paté fear.. here is a pictoral guide for correct quantities.

Please note: I have used butter here to indicate incorrect paté dosing. This does not mean I am suggesting you must apply butter this way. You apply it as thickly as you like.

Also note: I have used vegetarian mushroom paté because it is all I had available.

Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 19:16

@PatriciaHolm I think you mean August, these days!

Dingdong90 · 26/01/2023 19:28

My partner is the only one in the house who eats pate and be can finish a packet in 2 days, one if he shares with the dog 😂

Whycanineverever · 26/01/2023 19:43

@PatriciaHolm it's amazing. I was so happy to see it back this year. The little jelly layer on the top is cranberry.....

StridTheKiller · 26/01/2023 19:48

I can easily eat a whole pack in one sitting. No bread mind, just pate.

CavalierApproach · 26/01/2023 19:57

I bought pate today for the first time in probably fifteen years.

MrsRonaldWeasley · 26/01/2023 19:58

Is this for real??? 🤣🤣🤣
