Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?

There are 4 of us. Once a week we have lots of different types of salads with French bread and pate as our evening meal. We love pate. It gets eaten at breakfast on toast in the days afterwards.

We never managed to eat it all before we’re scared of it. Why don’t they sell it in usable portions?

Do you mean this one OP?

175g pot doesn't get eaten in a week?

🤣😂 this indeed is the center piece on a Saturday , along with lots of different types of salad i mean what does this even mean ?? 🤪 eating it on toast for days after 🤯 😂good work op this has cheered me up this morning . Really want pate now tho !

TheNoodlesIncident · 26/01/2023 08:59

The greying on the outside is the oxidising process. You could just scrape it off.

Alternatively portion it up before dinner and put the excess in the freezer, so it doesn't get wasted. It is very rich and flavoursome so maybe that's why you've got away with tiny portions for your dinners and breakfasts, but it isn't supposed to be eaten like that really...

WinterDeWinter · 26/01/2023 09:07

I would be fine with it as long as they pointed out to the kids the unbelievable horror of the fact that in 2023 human beings in one of the richest countries on earth are reliant on charity to avoid starvation. I think if we're to have a hope in hell of fixing this, that lesson can't come soon enough.

It's horrific, and we've allowed ourselves to be made blind to that fact.

maddy68 · 26/01/2023 09:11

I can eat it all by myself in one sitting

I've never liked pate but I never used to like mustard or coffee. Think I'll buy some to try.

Go for a mild tasting one like pork & mushroom. As it has pork products and not just liver, the taste isn't as strong.

Tesco currently do a ham hock and piccalilli patè which is amazing.

Most restaurant patè are liver, thyme brandy, cream and butter. So are stronger tasting (that's if they are made in house)

I make parfait every day for work, as long as it is topped (sealed) with either clarified butter or a jelly of sorts you can safely store for 5 days (I have eaten it at day 7 after taking some home at the end of day 5)

Perfectly OK to freeze as well

Op, you clearly arnt eating patè properly if 4 of you can't polish off a standard sized pot in one meal.

Beercrispsandnuts · 26/01/2023 09:15

Op, just to clarify, a serving of pate for a starter would be around 60 grams. Usually Paté pots do around 3 servings. That would he seem as quite frugal, as recommended servings usually are, and if you ordered pate in a restaurant for a starter it would be at least half a pot normally

there are many ways to eat it, but generally if in a restaurant, it’s put a portion on your plate, put a dollop on the end of your bread, eat that bite, then add another dollop to the next bit of bread and so on. The pate should be the largest component of the mouthful you are taking. Ie more Paté than bread. Of course just spreading it thickly all over or eating it on its own is also fine.

I’ve never heard of Paté being the centre piece of s treat meal, but I guess it could be if it was home made, with different types etc, accompanied by other things.

for us we generally go through about 3 pots a week for 3 of us. It’s eaten in toast, In sandwiches or on its own.

It is not a spread like marmite or butter, but much more thickly.

it also should be eaten within two days of opening.

chococherrychoochoo · 26/01/2023 09:15

Why do you find it tricky to spread a thick layer?

pornyshroudofturin · 26/01/2023 09:15

MissMarpleRocks · 26/01/2023 08:23

Whenever I have pate it never lasts longer than a day. I just keep going back to the fridge with a teaspoon. And a cracker. Bloody love pate. The dog tries to snog me whenever I eat it.

I don't blame him @MissMarpleRocks. Am so starving and craving pate that I'd probably try to snog you too right now

we as a family really like it - it’s literally the once a week treat centre piece meal with salad on a Saturday night. We look forward to it. We also eat it for days afterwards as I said in my OP. Eventually the outside is grey and the inside is pink and I’m scared it’s not safe based on the packet instructions but also my nose.

I’m really struggling with the concept of a ‘once a week treat’ that you have ‘for several days afterwards’. So surely there are only around 3 days a week that you don’t eat pate? That ‘once a week’ treat?

WinterDeWinter · 26/01/2023 09:22

lol - meant this for the food banks thread...

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 26/01/2023 09:30

@BarbaraofSeville homeopathic paste made me lol.

That's what OP and her family are doing - spreading a memory of a scraping of pate on their toast.

OP you need to layer it thicker than the toast and leave bite marks. Several cm high. Delicious!

I have some coop finest pate in the fridge and am going to have it for breakfast now. It'll be lucky to last the day! I can easily eat at least half a pack at one sitting.

StaceySolomonSwash · 26/01/2023 09:33

One pack of pate with buttered toast is one lunch for me and DH. No leftovers!

MaverickGooseGoose · 26/01/2023 09:33

This is one of the most bizarre threads I e come across!

One tub of pate as a treat on Saturday (odd in itself) with salad for four people. Then eat it for breakfast. Then still have enough left to be worried about it going off?!

Thank you! I honestly would not have known what to choose.

pyracantha · 25/01/2023 23:20

We buy the white tubs from the coop - it’s not from a pricey deli or anything.

We all like it very much as a treat. It sounds like people are putting it on as a thick layer on French bread rather than a spread? I’d find that tricky.

We have it on toast in the days afterwards

Once it’s gone grey in the fridge with a still pink middle I’m scared of it.

Yes. That is how you eat it. @pyracantha your family sound like you need lessons in food! 😂

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 26/01/2023 09:40

Yeah the OP's kids are going to be on Mumsnet threads in 20 years asking what weird things did your parents do and replying that they were only allowed to scrape a thin layer of pate on their toast instead of eating it properly and they are now scarred for life Grin

Dinodelight · 26/01/2023 10:00

I could easily eat a pack in one sitting with a spoon! What the hell are you doing with this pate? Sound like you spread it the way my mum spreads butter: put a load on then scrape it all
off again leaving the thinnest layer possible.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 26/01/2023 10:03

Why do I suspect that the OP is one of those lazy excuses for journos that put these type of posts in scummy media outlets.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 26/01/2023 10:05

Patineur · 26/01/2023 08:41

OP, could you post a picture of, say, a piece of bread with paté on to show how thickly you and your family normally spread it? How many pieces of baguette and paté would each of you normally have as part of a meal?

What do you mean by pieces?

Of course its only one small slice of baguette each, anything else is GREEDY.

That’s made me properly laugh.

Im on a fast day today & blooming craving pate so much 😖😜

Bonjovispyjamas · 26/01/2023 10:09

That's so strange 🤔 I live alone and always finish a packet before it goes off.

I'm struggling with the concept of cheap pate from the co-op being classed as a treat and a "centre piece meal"!

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/01/2023 10:25

I buy small portions of pâté in lidded pots from Aldi. It's never gone off before I've been able to eat it and it's just me! Are you only having a scrape each?

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 26/01/2023 10:26

Ok OP for some perspective. Here's my 160g packet of coop finest pate. This is how much I've used on my first slice of (quite large) sourdough bread. I'm assuming this is the same amount 4 of you must use at one meal. Grin

The person who talked about slicing on slabs of pate rather than spreading is right!

Surely nobody can eat a pack of pate?
WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 26/01/2023 10:27

Can't believe I'm actually this invested in a thread about pate on my day off!
