To see a psychic

TwentysixV · 23/01/2023 23:18

I’ve never believed in anything supernatural, am a scientist. I recently read a book where the main character went to see a psychic and it got me thinking. I read some reviews of a local one online and most of them were positive saying she was extremely accurate, mentioning specific names etc. she charges £40 which I can easily afford. I want to go partly out of curiosity and partly because I’ve been single all my life and want some reassurance that everything will be ok/I’ll meet someone in the future.
interested to know if anyone has any experience with going to see a psychic and if they were accurate or a total waste of time. And also what “reading” am I after-is it tarot cards or is there another name for where they basically tell you about your situation and what they think the future has in store for you.
I’m not that interested in replies saying it’s all a load of rubbish from people who have never been to a psychic though!
any insight would be interesting

You're a scientist, you say ..?

007DoubleOSeven · 23/01/2023 23:51

You are not unreasonable to be curious. I wouldn't pay to see one like that though. Go along to your nearest spiritualist church a couple of times, will satisfy your curiosity for much less.

007DoubleOSeven · 23/01/2023 23:52

And, I'm sure you know, that being a scientist and having faith aren't mutually exclusive!

SomePosters · 23/01/2023 23:53

Such a blatant wind up

ComtesseDeSpair · 23/01/2023 23:54

How would you feel if this woman actually was a genuine psychic and told you that you’ll never meet anyone and will be single and unloved until the day you die? Because if she’s genuine, surely that’s a possibility you have to be prepared for, rather than a reassuring platitude that your time will come and there’s a dark, handsome stranger whose name begins with T out there who will show himself to you in time? Wouldn’t you rather just not know?

Psychics and Tarot readers are not the same. Whilst some Tarot readers may be psychic, not all psychics will read the cards.

Tarot only shows a possible future though and that future may change according to any action you take.

As for psychics - I move in a lot of occult circles and have only come across 1 or maybe 2 people I would consider to have the gift. The vast majority do not. They may well believe they have though...

As for Tarot - it's reasonably easy to learn. I read Tarot myself but I wouldn't for one minute lay claim to being psychic.

My dd went to see one and had a reading, came back amazed at what the woman had told her about James. “Who’s James?” I asked, turns out dd thought her great grandfather was called James ( he wasn’t) and funnily enough the psychic did too and what is more had lots of information about him, equally inaccurate. They read people.

Ok - I’ll let you into a secret…

Many of my friends/ family would be very surprised at this, but I regularly ( couple of times a year) visit a psychic/ tarot/ medium.

Have been doing this for years.

not always the same one, but over the last twenty years I’ve seen a lot.

there are a lot of charlatans out there, cold readers etc.so do your research. Let’s face it, it’s an easy way to make money.

However, I have been to a few tarot readers and mediums who have been crazily accurate. I mean specific names, have predicted very particular events. Told me things about the past that are very specific.

I also have a couple of friends who’ve had very specific readings.

spiritualist churches are worth visiting. You can go to a clairvoyant service for a small donation to see a medium do a demonstration/service. It will give you an idea of how good they are. You can then book a private reading.

where are you based?

Coasterfan · 24/01/2023 00:06

I went to see one in 2005. I was married but it was all wrong and I was in love with someone else. I was young and I basically wanted her to tell me everything would turn out ok and I d end up with the one I was in love with. She told me I was struggling with a decision (a good guess as that’s why most people go!) and everything would work out how I wanted it but it would not be immediately. She also knew my husband’s name and there was absolutely no way she could have found that out, there was no social media and I was not linked to her in any way.

I left my husband summer 2006 and got with the man I was in love with shortly after. We are still together and have a 13 and 15 year old.

I was sceptical and I think a lot of what she said was just lucky guesses but to this day I have no idea how she knew my husband’s name.

Singsong60 · 24/01/2023 00:07

I went to one when I was in a very bad place in my life and she really helped me. She was very accurate with very specific details. I wrote everything down as she talked and 8 things happened including 4 major life changes that at the time looked impossible. Two things she said never happened and she gave a much shorter time line than the length of time it actually took for the events to unfold. She also gave me advice about a close relationship that opened my eyes and I would never have seen on my own.

RustySwitchblade · 24/01/2023 00:09

I’d also add that I’m always surprised by the hostility these kind of threads get.

if people believe in it, where’s the harm ? No different from going to church.

i get the charlatan aspect - but I view it as helpful as a therapy session. And if you can afford £40 on half an hour of entertainment- why not? People spend more on fantasies and things that make them feel better. No worse than paying a fortune for a handbag/ anti ageing face cream/ diet books!

Don't you think that, as you've seen many, it is just luck that some of them got some stuff right.

So the ones who guessed incorrectly are charlatans, but the ones who guessed correctly are genuine.

I have accompanied friends on several occasions. Every time, my friends come straight out with a big long list of predictions and so on, dozens of them. Gradually, over time, they forget all the stuff that wasn't true or never happened, and focus on the fact that they did indeed meet a significant person whose name began with J (or whatever).

I think it's an awful, exploitative career choice and I would never pay money to people who are either deluded or laughing at my gullibility.

MsPavlichenko · 24/01/2023 00:27

You’re not a scientist if you are even asking this question.

Superhanz · 24/01/2023 00:34

I saw one in 2018 after being a complete skeptic my whole life. She was so accurate it knocked me for six. I'm a lot more option to the super natural now. I'd gone through infertility and ivf, she knew about this and said I'd have a fair haired (im dark) baby daughter naturally, a Christmas baby and in 2021 i got just that.

ThreeLittleDots · 24/01/2023 00:56

Before you book, change your name on social media profiles, lock them all down. Google your own name and email address, and delete anything that comes up.

Amazing how much info is out there.

RustySwitchblade · 24/01/2023 08:40

@donttellmehesalive i think you raise a really good point - the answer is I’m not sure.

I know that, logically, I’m just as likely to be fooled as the next person and it could be confirmation bias, but I have been told things specific to my job ( which is very niche), exact names, scenarios etc.

also been told by a medium very specific things that happened in my family before I was born. It was only when I spoke to my dad that he said that was exactly what happened. So cold reading wouldn’t work there.

I think it can be a bit like counselling if you get a good one. I do feel more positive when I have a good reading. ( I know that sounds sad, but if it gives you comfort…)

but agree most are fakes.

I had my Tarot cards read back in 1977, I was single but dating casually as I had no interest in getting married. With two older sisters already divorced, it didn't appeal to me at all.

The Tarot reader told me my life would change dramatically in June, and I would have a long and happy marriage.

I met my DH in June at a random sports event I wouldn't have normally attended. We were engaged that Christmas, and married at Christmas 1978.

Shunkleisshiny · 24/01/2023 09:12

And still very happy!

BloodAndFire · 24/01/2023 09:14

You are not a 'scientist'.

But the fact you thought that might sound remotely plausible doesn't indicate very good critical thinking skills.

BloodAndFire · 24/01/2023 09:15

MsPavlichenko · 24/01/2023 00:27

You’re not a scientist if you are even asking this question.

They're also not a scientist because there is no scientist in the world who would describe themselves as 'a scientist' (rather than a molecular biologist, an epidemiologist, an astrophysicist, a marine zoologist etc.)

You will meet a tall dark stranger and shag him and live happily ever after. I accept PayPal

If they say that to everyone, a good % will feel that it came true.

They met a significant partner, had a car accident, were burgled, booked a major holiday, suffered a bereavement, changed jobs.

Frabbits · 24/01/2023 12:10

It's bollocks, of course it's bollocks. It's all completely explainable as to what they do to produce readings that give the impression that they are telling you things they couldn't possibly know.

But, it's not just "a bit of fun".

It's harmful and it's exploitative. Please do not encourage these people by giving them money.
