To see a psychic

TwentysixV · 23/01/2023 23:18

I’ve never believed in anything supernatural, am a scientist. I recently read a book where the main character went to see a psychic and it got me thinking. I read some reviews of a local one online and most of them were positive saying she was extremely accurate, mentioning specific names etc. she charges £40 which I can easily afford. I want to go partly out of curiosity and partly because I’ve been single all my life and want some reassurance that everything will be ok/I’ll meet someone in the future.
interested to know if anyone has any experience with going to see a psychic and if they were accurate or a total waste of time. And also what “reading” am I after-is it tarot cards or is there another name for where they basically tell you about your situation and what they think the future has in store for you.
I’m not that interested in replies saying it’s all a load of rubbish from people who have never been to a psychic though!
any insight would be interesting

Mum was visited by a lady selling 'lucky heather' my 8 month old brother was in mums arms. The lady told mum that he would grow up and wear a uniform.
He went into the army.

He presumably also went to school.
And could have picked one of a million careers that requires a uniform.

Before FB etc I was with friends in a town over 150 miles from home.
We saw a psychic and he told me that I was going to have a big connection
with Canada.
A few days later visiting mum and was telling her about this reading we were laughing as there isn't any reason to have a connection. My older brother came to mums house as well to let us know he was going to Canada for 6 months.

Two examples which show precisely how these people pretend to be able to predict the future by coming out with incredibly generic predictions which sound like they are far more unlikely than they actually are.

dad's oncologist used to read her star sign is she not a scientist?

I bet she didn't use it to diagnose cancer.

😂😂😂

Except between 21st June & 22nd July.

Hollowgast · 24/01/2023 16:35

Please do the Ghostbusters quote:

"I sense a name beginning with P"
"Hey, back off man. I'm a scientist".

Pandor · 24/01/2023 16:36

“Grow up and wear a uniform”. Dear god. Not just school, but Beavers, Cubs, Scouts…you just can’t lose with that one!

And you remember them because, out of the many people your medium scammed read, in these 2 incidences, her broad & nebulous "predictions" coincided with what panned out in your family's life.

You didn't witness her "predicting" the same to 20 other families that week, who will have forgotten all about it, because it didn't "come true".

I also had a reading that said I would go to an important meeting in a tall, glass building to resolve an issue. That someone at the meeting would be pregnant.

I sued a company and the court hearing was in a tall, glass building. At the final hearing the lawyer for the other side informed the judge she was pregnant. The issue was resolved after that.

You can be a logical person and spiritual or religious.

“A tall glass building,” you mean like an office block? Or a hospital, or a block of flats?

Yeah but the meeting was to resolve "an issue". How could the psychic possibly be more specific than that.

You will see a pregnant woman in a glass building.

You will wear a uniform at some point.

You will have some sort of connection with Canada.

These are not rare situations. They all fit me.

Before you book, change your name on social media profiles, lock them all down. Google your own name and email address, and delete anything that comes up.

Amazing how much info is out there.

Or surely it would be a lot easier to just give a false name?

dayswithaY · 24/01/2023 16:44

It’s tiresome when angry people feel the need to tell others that psychics are a load of rubbish, and just out to take your money.

I believe OP said they weren’t interested in people telling her it’s all fake, but they turned up and said their piece anyway.

I have been to several psychics over the years, not looking for answers or reassurance but mainly accompanying a friend and just out of curiosity. I’ve had mediocre readings and readings that were just waffle.

But I’ve been to two that spoke specifically about someone who had died, with names, dates and details that they could not have known. This was pre social media and they only had my first name.

You have no proof that all psychics are charlatans, just as I have no proof some are gifted.

We cannot understand the complexities of the universe, just let people do what they want and dial down the arrogance.

People don't tend to visit offices, or hospitals, or even blocks of flats, unless they have an issue to resolve. Even if the issue is as low-level as "my friend has moved to a new apartment building & needs me to help with her removals."

ReneBumsWombats · 24/01/2023 16:48

It’s tiresome when angry people feel the need to tell others that psychics are a load of rubbish, and just out to take your money.

It's much more tiresome when people accuse you of being "angry" rather than actually refute anything. Very lazy and just not very clever. Why would being angry mean you're not right?

But as it happens, I think a lot of us are indeed angry that a load of charlatans exist to exploit grief, fear and vulnerability, and to be told to accept it when not one of them has ever displayed the power under lab conditions. James Randi once had a million dollars in it for them but no.

Bluekerfuffle · 24/01/2023 16:49

There seem to be a few talented psychics on this thread if they can tell you with such certainly that you are not a scientist.

So what made him decide to become a soldier rather than a police officer, fire fighter, paramedic, surgeon, nurse, dentist, supermarket shelf stacker, butcher, lifeboat crew, train driver, pilot, astronaut, football player, cricketer, sailor, traffic warden, bin man, vicar, jockey, House of Commons attendant, clown, ringmaster, trapeze artist or professional cyclist?

It's not arrogant to point out that:

  1. Nobody has ever proven any sort of psychic ability that cannot be explained by rational means.

  2. We know exactly how psychics can trick people into thinking they know things "they cannot possibly know".

You have no proof that psychics are real. That's the long and short of it; I don't need to prove they are not as much as I don't need to prove that the moon is made of cheese. Some things are just obviously not real.

If it was the case that these people just did it as a game, then that would be fine. The problem is that any "psychic" who charges money for their lies is by definition a scam artist and fraudster, and every time someone encourages someone to go along to them means these fuckers have someone new to prey on.

LakeTiticaca · 24/01/2023 16:54

If you can afford 40 quid, why not?
I'm sceptical about these things, nobody can predict the future, if they could why are they not foreseeing tragic events and warning people?
Nobody can speak to the dead. They are dead and cannot answer

If you're so clever, don't use arguments that aren't. And "y u mad bro" is not a clever argument.

I haven't seen any responses that are angry, except in the sense that they disapprove of frauds exploiting vulnerable people. Maybe that doesn't make you angry, but it should.

dayswithaY · 24/01/2023 16:59

Frabbits if you care to read my post, I do clearly state that I have no proof that psychics exist.

Out of interest - if anyone cares, I was just stating that I have had a reading where the psychic knew certain facts that were very specific and she could not have known. This is my experience, I’m not here to promote psychics, but this experience did happen to me. That’s all.

We've heard those stories and it's well known how it's done, and the psychological elements in the mark's experience and retelling too. Don't you think at least one of these people would have managed it under lab conditions by now?
