To see a psychic

TwentysixV · 23/01/2023 23:18

I’ve never believed in anything supernatural, am a scientist. I recently read a book where the main character went to see a psychic and it got me thinking. I read some reviews of a local one online and most of them were positive saying she was extremely accurate, mentioning specific names etc. she charges £40 which I can easily afford. I want to go partly out of curiosity and partly because I’ve been single all my life and want some reassurance that everything will be ok/I’ll meet someone in the future.
interested to know if anyone has any experience with going to see a psychic and if they were accurate or a total waste of time. And also what “reading” am I after-is it tarot cards or is there another name for where they basically tell you about your situation and what they think the future has in store for you.
I’m not that interested in replies saying it’s all a load of rubbish from people who have never been to a psychic though!
any insight would be interesting

Go, but wear a wedding / engagement ring (or one that could pass) and see what she says.

But you have to come back and update us.

Rene, I bow to your superior knowledge.

lol u mad

People have an absolute rage whenever this is ever mentioned.

I read tarot cards - for myself and my friends, for free. I have had readings done by professionals. I don’t care whether people think it’s ridiculous.

I would be wary, though, because while a good one isn’t necessarily exploitative (you have to remember that a lot of these people do believe in what they’re doing), there are ABSOLUTELY people out there who are just taking people’s money. They’re not going to tell you you’re going to die or you must do XYZ - tarot is about what could happen if you stay on your current path and you have the free will to change it. It’s also sort of like a mirror reflecting the situation back at you - it raises points and makes you think of the situation from different perspectives. It could be argued that it’s purely a psychological tool.

I wouldn’t go to a professional reader now I don’t think because I may as well just do it myself.

“A tall glass building,” you mean like an office block? Or a hospital, or a block of flats?

Yeah but the meeting was to resolve "an issue". How could the psychic possibly be more specific than that.

This isn't specific at all!

I say this as someone who has been given specific predictions.

Patineur · 24/01/2023 17:12

I've seen a psychic who tried to tell me a load of generic stuff that was either stuff that could apply to anyone, vague guesses or utter rubbish. Amongst other things, she told me that I was going to go travelling within the next few months. As this was mid March 2020, that one fell very very badly.

Talking about which, I wonder why no psychics foresaw the pandemic (waits for someone to come forward with details of all the psychics who claim (after the event) that they did)?

Patineur · 24/01/2023 17:16

xogossipgirlxo · 24/01/2023 15:28

I agree 100%. Btw. creepy😁Did you get scared when you saw the pregnant judge and you realised reading was true?

Loving the concept that a lawyer took it on him/herself to tell a judge that the judge was pregnant. I would definitely want to be in court to see that.

It’s tiresome when angry people feel the need to tell others that psychics are a load of rubbish, and just out to take your money.

It's much more tiresome when people accuse you of being "angry" rather than actually refute anything. Very lazy and just not very clever. Why would being angry mean you're not right?

But as it happens, I think a lot of us are indeed angry that a load of charlatans exist to exploit grief, fear and vulnerability, and to be told to accept it when not one of them has ever displayed the power under lab conditions. James Randi once had a million dollars in it for them but no.

The thing is, OP explicitly didn't want to hear those opinions. That's why it's arrogant. It's like being an atheist who has to bang on about it regardless of the fact no-one else cares.

The lawyer told the judge that she (the lawyer) was pregnant and would be unavailable at future hearings.

I'm not engaging further. Bored, angry people feel the need to spam a thread about something the OP was explicitly not interest in.

If you're all so interested in vulnerable people, go volunteer and stop giving your opinion where it's not wanted.

Didn't you post about the arrogance of atheists upthead @Puffin87?

While failing to clock your own arrogance in dictating to PP what you felt they were 'allowed' to post? Not even OP herself can do that. You know how discussion forums work, right?

The irony of you calling other people angry & arrogant from a stance of self-appointed prefect of what opinons are wanted is hilarious.

PS I was much more interested in@Patineur's opinion than yours.
But have I told you how you ought to post? Wowsers - I haven't! So who's the angry & arrogant party here again?

donquixotedelamancha · 24/01/2023 17:32

People don't tend to visit offices, or hospitals, or even blocks of flats, unless they have an issue to resolve. Even if the issue is as low-level as "my friend has moved to a new apartment building & needs me to help with her removals."

This isn't specific at all!

Christ on a bike. If you go into settings you can check a box so MN will highlight all the ironic posts for you.

I'd ask how PPs know the state of mind of anonymous people based on a few simple lines of text but obviously it's because they are psychic.

There's nothing arrogant about answering a post on a public forum.

If anything, it's arrogant to post on a public forum and attempt to dictate the responses.

Frabbits · 24/01/2023 17:41

dayswithaY · 24/01/2023 16:59

Frabbits if you care to read my post, I do clearly state that I have no proof that psychics exist.

Out of interest - if anyone cares, I was just stating that I have had a reading where the psychic knew certain facts that were very specific and she could not have known. This is my experience, I’m not here to promote psychics, but this experience did happen to me. That’s all.

You said that it's arrogant to merely point out that psychics are not real.

It's not though, it's just fact.

ALL of them out there taking money in exchange for readings are fraudsters. Every single one of them.

And that is the issue. I wouldn't give a monkeys if people weren't making money out of it, but they are, and they are doing so often by exploiting highly vulnerable people who should be getting professional medical help, not being sold false hope by some prick saving up for a new Audi.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/01/2023 17:52

Don't underestimate the power of showmanship too.

If I told you in the course of normal conversation that I heard you had a connection with Canada or the US (because about 95% of people have), you'd just ask how I knew or who told you. Come to my tent full of incense and candles while I breathily tell you I know this about you, and you'll find it much spookier and more inexplicable.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/01/2023 17:53

Hey, all you people who saw a psychic at home...did they have doorbells?

Snapdragon123 · 24/01/2023 17:55

My earlier comment seemed to have been ignored by Mumsnet.

I suspect OP is thinking of visiting some sort of psychic.

What I was trying to say was. If you do see one. Please look after yourself. Please don’t make a decision after the guidance of a psychic that could negatively impact your life.

ThreeLittleDots · 24/01/2023 18:01

But I’ve been to two that spoke specifically about someone who had died, with names, dates and details that they could not have known. This was pre social media and they only had my first name

I think your friend would have told the psychic this info. Or they knew of you some other way.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/01/2023 18:06

This shit long predates social media and there's all manner of ways they can get personal info.

If they can talk to the dead, they should be on murder investigation squads.

BloodAndFire · 24/01/2023 18:07

Shame that the tall glass building amazing magic foresight lady didn't bother to warn any of the several thousand people who went to work in the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.

Or any of those who took the tube to work on 7 July 2005.

Or any of the women murdered and abducted by strangers on their way home.

You'd think you'd want to use that sort of amazing special magic gift to make the world a better place, rather than scamming credulous/desperate people out of a few quid.

BloodAndFire · 24/01/2023 18:10

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen there is one person who has mentioned 'sky fairies' on this thread. You.

Oh, now there's two. Me also.

And no, it's not 'fear of the unknown'. Alison from Bromley telling me my son will one day own a pair of black shoes and that a kettle will feature in my future isn't a terrifying prospect.

Snapdragon123 · 24/01/2023 18:11

@ReneBumsWombats

have you been reading the Doris Stokes books?

This made me laugh. I saw a psychic about five years ago and gave a fake name - well, the name of another friend who couldn't go. He gave me a load of accurate information about 'my' life that had presumably been lifted directly from the Internet.

Another friend on that same visit was told 'when you meet a man whose name begins with k you must trust him with all your heart.' For ages she prioritised dating men whose names started with k. Positively dangerous to give someone information like that.

PP ask why some people feel the need to mock it all. It's because it's obviously, demonstrably untrue whilst preying on vulnerable and gullible people. I'm not sure if it's theft exactly, but a scam that sucks people in and takes their money.

No, but I've read some Derren Brown ones and others.

Should I?

donttellmehesalive · 24/01/2023 18:19

AFAIK the million dollars offered to any genuine psychic in the 1960s by the James Randi Foundation is still safe. Anyone who you find convincing should be directed that way.
