To see a psychic

I’ve never believed in anything supernatural, am a scientist. I recently read a book where the main character went to see a psychic and it got me thinking. I read some reviews of a local one online and most of them were positive saying she was extremely accurate, mentioning specific names etc. she charges £40 which I can easily afford. I want to go partly out of curiosity and partly because I’ve been single all my life and want some reassurance that everything will be ok/I’ll meet someone in the future.
interested to know if anyone has any experience with going to see a psychic and if they were accurate or a total waste of time. And also what “reading” am I after-is it tarot cards or is there another name for where they basically tell you about your situation and what they think the future has in store for you.
I’m not that interested in replies saying it’s all a load of rubbish from people who have never been to a psychic though!
any insight would be interesting

You realise that the million dollar prize offered to anyone who could prove mediumship or any other kind of paranormal power was never won?

I did actually hear a tape of someone's reading once, years ago. There was a lot of babble but the guy was smooth. He got a few things right. There were indeed some yellow flowers in the garden and something red that was significant to the deceased. Had to think a bit about the Isle of Wight connection but apparently he'd gone once as a young man. Yes, the family had an old barbecue set.

A lot of babble. Not much hard stuff for a 45 minute reading.

I'm reminded of all the Mumsnetters who can't let us know they have two kids, a dog and a husband who cycles because it's so outing.

EmmaEmerald · 24/01/2023 19:58

I think of stuff about the deceased as being more about mediums than psychics. Mum asked me about seeing a medium after her sister died. I told her she could do whatever she liked but politely advised against that and said I wouldn't accompany her.

Have you not seen Derren Brown in action? These people are fakes. Don't waste your time or money.

You realise they stalk you right, when you book. That's how they know details.

"It's all about personal interpretation and belief"

It's really not.

It's bullshit. All of it.

My friend lost her ds 3 years back and she visits a psychic. Her other ds wanted to visit to check it out and he was deeply disappointed. But I don't know what he expected. If my friend found some peace through the visits, was it not her choice? I understand the money side but is it simply paying for a service, exploitative in some eyes or not.

I visited one when I was young. She did not take money, you just took her something eg flowers, chocs everyday items. She told me "You turn the key at number three", why does your brother live away from home and who is the man in uniform? That was just the start. I lived at no. 3, my brother left home following a family fall out over lifestyle and my dad was the local policeman. I gave no name on booking. Maybe just good luck I suppose but how do you read that knowledge?

TeaAndToastx · 29/08/2023 09:45

I went to a medium a couple of years ago, recommended locally by word of mouth. She asked if the name Charlie meant anything to me and I was gobsmacked as this was my grandfather’s name. He died in the 90s and no mention of him on social media. She also mentioned some other things which didn’t mean anything to me personally, but when I went home and told my mum she was shocked and said the woman was talking about my great-grandmother. My husband who was a massive sceptic couldn’t explain how the medium would know these details.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 29/08/2023 10:26

I'm also science based, facts etc but have been once to see a psychic, along with my sister and some of her work colleagues (all work in a hospital) Someone dropped out and I stepped in literally last minute.
I enjoyed it. Lots of stuff was generic, but lots of people's lives are so can make guesses. She mentioned the hopsital but she 'knew' I didn't work there but had been going for 'gynaecological 'reasons. Noone , and I mean noone except my husband was aware this was happening as we were having difficulty in conceiving. We were doing ivf treatment but hadn't mentioned it to anyone, told.me.we would have 2 more kids (we eventually fostered and eneded up with 2 kids)
Some other stuff appeared to link to events /people for me but I realise many things can 'fit'. This was about 14yrs ago. My other sis has just booked for us to go in 2 mths to see a different one.
I found it interesting, I found it strange she knew some certain stuff that she couldn't have known but was very precise to fit to me, would not have been accurate for the majority of the population. Do I believe?? Prob not. Did I enjoy it? Yes? Is it hurting anyone? No ....AS LONG as you don't act on it, expect it to be true ( I can see that some people could be damaged by it)

Frabbits · 29/08/2023 10:49

"Is it hurting anyone?"

Absolutely it is. These people are frauds and scam artists, no better than any other type of scam artist. Not only do they scam people out of money they offer false hope and bullshit to often very vunerable, desperate people.

You’re not a scientist if you are even asking this question.

Oh give over. There's plenty stuff that science doesn't yet know or fully understand. Science and belief aren't mutually exclusive. I'm a qualified scientist with 25 years experience and I know we can't explain everything. And yes, I go to church too.

FarmGirl78 · 29/08/2023 11:09

BloodAndFire · 24/01/2023 09:15

They're also not a scientist because there is no scientist in the world who would describe themselves as 'a scientist' (rather than a molecular biologist, an epidemiologist, an astrophysicist, a marine zoologist etc.)

Honestly, sometimes we just say Scientist. Because generally no-one knows what a red cell immunohaematologist is. It might be that we've trained in one branch but then ended up working in another branch that we're not directly qualified in. You don't speak for all Scientists.

Arghhhhh not only a Zombie thread, but a Zombie thread awakened by spammers. 🤬 Shoot me now. I didn't spot it. 🙈
