To relocate to Australia?

I've been offered a role in my company in Australia (I'm in north east England now) - same company, nearly double what I'm on now. I've just come out of (or at least tried to - it's been hard) a difficult relationship with addiction involved. I'm utterly broken by it. I have a son whose other parent is 50/50 but has said he's happy for me to go for a fixed period (between 1-2 years). I've stayed in his home town since we split to allow easy co parenting but I never meant to stay here long term.

Can I leave? All I want to do is run away and the job offer and quality of life would be amazing but I'm not sure if it's fair on my son. Everything I've seen says children have a fantastic life there. The job move is fantastic and will set me up for a much better one when I come back.

100% do it!

Fabulous news! You and DS are going to love it. So much to see and do. What an adventure for him!

pilates · 22/02/2023 06:40

I came on to say do it but can see flights booked. From what you have described I would definitely go for it. Is your son excited?

Codlingmoths · 22/02/2023 06:54

It sounds great for an 8 year old, a perfect time for a change. He wanted one anyway and let’s be honest active and sporty will make it much easier. We are Aussie originally, moved our london born dc here and they adapted seamlessly, I moved a lot when young and LOVED arriving somewhere new and settling in, it’s a huge adventure. We are also sufficiently better paid here that we are better off than we were in london, and it sounds like the op is in the same boat. Brilliant to have such a great coparenting relationship, he will look back and be so happy to have had these opportunities.

Oh wow, bloody brilliant, well done you!. I bet when you first started this thread you didn't imagine that in less than 2 months time you'd be starting a new life on the other side of the world 💐💐😊

BakedTattie · 14/03/2023 20:41

Well done you. You and your son will have the best time. Very jealous

Genevieva · 14/03/2023 20:54

Ask if you can visit and, as well as seeing where you would work, take the time to look at places you could afford to live in, find out what the local schools are like and even try to visit those. They should offer a proper relocation package that supports you with sorting all of these things out.

Dontevenstart · 14/03/2023 20:57

Do it. You will regret it if you don’t give it a shot. It’ll be scary, but absolutely do it.

Hop27 · 14/03/2023 23:09

@sadandconfused23 - How exciting, enjoy the flight and take it all in! Do you have a good cabin class if work are paying?! You should avoid the 35deg heat in Sydney thankfully, mid 20's next week - much nicer!
