To doubt that a big Coronation is actually what the public wants

It seems as if the press are now saying that people do want a big Coronation ceremony which surprised me - surely with people not being able to afford food and heating it all seems so OTT especially just after the jubilee. Makes me wonder how they got the information that this is what people actually want. I know there'll be the usual flag wavers but surely most people don't want or need money to be wasted on a big celebration?

And the public wants what the public gets, but I don't get what this society wants ..

renonovice · 22/01/2023 20:21

They are telling people want they want so some will believe they do want it!

I thought it was a common thing in the past to distract the "peasants" with a Royal celebration

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 22/01/2023 20:22

Opinions vary. Some people on a tight budget will resent the extravagance; others will see it as 'free' entertainment; others will take the view it's bringing wealth into the country. Ultimately, Charles will do as he likes.

Grumpybutfunny · 22/01/2023 20:24

Tourism = income = tax = public spending the key will be to balance what the royals pay and what it costs the tax payer vs what we get back. To be honest I'm looking forward to the extra bank holiday weekend

MelchiorsMistress · 22/01/2023 20:24

Enough people want it that it should go ahead properly. People will complain either way. At least if they carry on with it enough people will enjoy it that they will be able to claim a success.

Bubblebubblebah · 22/01/2023 20:24

It's a coronation and well overdue. I say go all out! Partaaaay
Bet you next one will be toned down.

I am not even British and I am "ooooh" about it🤦 Probably the only time I eill be somewhere for coronation in my life!

LottoLaura · 22/01/2023 20:26

Less than 25% of people are struggling with the COL crisis

People on here often forget that, a minority of the population are struggling to heat their homes and feed their kids.

So yes I can quite believe most people want a big coronation.

bellac11 · 22/01/2023 20:26

Im grateful for the extra day, we've booked a long weekend away because of that, going to watch it on the telly on the Saturday though, cant wait. Not specifically a royalist but if its going on, I want to be entertained and I want lots of sparkle and razzle dazzle thank you very much

A perfect example of understanding. Hopeful the majority of the public will realise

RobertaFirmino · 22/01/2023 20:29

It doesn't matter what I want, I'm not the one being crowned! It's King Tampon's do, he can have what he wants.

Inextremis · 22/01/2023 20:34

I want it - and I want it to be big, and exciting, and meaningful. Most of us (me included) have never experienced one before -it's an historical event, I love the continuity of the monarchy, the connection with the past, but with adaptations to fit the present. I wouldn't wish being a royal on anyone I cared about, I think it's a shit 'job', but I do enjoy the pageantry and ceremony. The cost of it all is something else, but does anyone honestly think that all the money would be diverted to the NHS or social welfare if the coronation was cancelled? Me neither.

kitsuneghost · 22/01/2023 20:35

I read earlier it is costing £100m. That money would be well better spent giving each of us £1.50 toward our cost of living increases.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/01/2023 20:35

Hmmm, dunno. It was bad in 2012, not long after the start of the 2008 global recession but people definitely loved the Olympics, they definitely loved the Platinum Jubilee so I suppose they will love the Coronation. I’m a republican but even I don’t think the Royal Family are the worst thing about this country atm so maybe it is a good thing….maybe….

Ffsmakeitstop · 22/01/2023 20:36

The amount of money that will be spent is obscene as was the money wasted on the funeral. I'm not naive enough to think it could have been used elsewhere because it wouldn't have been. But seriously what a waste.

UWhatNow · 22/01/2023 20:36

Everyone will bitch about it but then when it rolls around they will either be glued to the tv saying ‘doesn’t this country do pageantry well?’ or the dull republicans will carry on being the Debbie Downers they always are whilst sneakily enjoying the extra bank holiday.

Mylaferret · 22/01/2023 20:38

Who are all these sycophants who want millions spent on some over privileged tosser getting a crown put on his head?

Time to abolish the monarchy.

Zanatdy · 22/01/2023 20:39

We aren’t going to see many coronations in our life so let’s go all out. I’m going to camp out.

SherbetDips · 22/01/2023 20:40

I want a it all big! Pomp and circumstance, it’s going to be a very historic day.

orangeoyster · 22/01/2023 20:41

I think that after the Queen died, a lot of people realised that they do see at least some value in our royal family and what they represent.
So, while I was surprised at how widespread those feelings were at the time, it doesn't surprise me at all now that many would like to see their King's Coronation.

Meanwhile, I am anyone's for a bank holiday :)

Well most will see at least 2, as Charles won’t be in post long due to his age

Just because people aren't personally struggling themselves doesn't automatically mean they want a big coronation.

We're not struggling, bills are getting paid. Still think a big coronation is absolutely obscene.

wheresmymojo · 22/01/2023 20:43

I'll be abroad but if I was here then yes...I'd like a big coronation.

I like all the pomp and ceremony, I like learning about all the weird little quirky things that happen at these kind of things that go back to previous times and I see these kind of events as a quintessential part of being British.

I also think they act as a great showcase of the UK for tourists and to go some way to reminding people that we aren't just the horror of Brexit negotiations and BoJo.

wheresmymojo · 22/01/2023 20:43

Most of my circle of friends feel the same way as we discussed it the other day...

Correct, but that’s what the OP has used to indicate why it’s less believable that the majority are pro coronation.

Goodness me. It’s called context

LolaSmiles · 22/01/2023 20:44

I'm not a royalist but don't mind a smaller affair for the coronation whilst we still have a monarchy.

I don't like the hours of coverage and sycophants waxing lyrical about how they knew he'd be a great King when they once saw Charles shake hands with the person 6 people in front of them when a leisure centre was opened in 1992.
