To doubt that a big Coronation is actually what the public wants

It seems as if the press are now saying that people do want a big Coronation ceremony which surprised me - surely with people not being able to afford food and heating it all seems so OTT especially just after the jubilee. Makes me wonder how they got the information that this is what people actually want. I know there'll be the usual flag wavers but surely most people don't want or need money to be wasted on a big celebration?

It seems to be a constant refrain on here that people can’t afford to heat or eat.
Now if you look at photos from the 1930’s when people genuinely couldn’t eat everyone is little and skinny.
If people aren’t eating now how do we still have an obesity crisis?

It’d have been a lot quicker just to write “I know nothing about A) poverty and B) modern mass produced food.

This is a ridiculous post. You dont actually know what the public wants. You only know what you want.

Quite @SleeplessInEngland

Why is it ridiculous for the Op to post what she thinks? Actually there are many many people who agree and are against these coronation plans, however inconvenient their views may be for other individuals who support it.

What is ridiculous is being told by the media that 'the public' all support a lavish coronation, with no regard for how mixed the public's views actually are.

MargaritaRita · 23/01/2023 11:18

The optics are just all wrong with this over the top, very costly medieval nonsense.

But if there is no Coronation, there is no publicity and their raison d'etre is gone.

Marcipex · 23/01/2023 11:20

I think Charles is looking a bit rough tbh

Florenz · 23/01/2023 23:45

Have the Coronation on Coronation Street to save money, and work it into the storyline of the show.

Coasterfan · 23/01/2023 23:48

I don’t care about the coronation but I m looking forward to the extra bank holiday and hopefully a camping weekend away! For those of us who get bank holidays off it’s two long weekends in a row!

Less than 25% of people are struggling with the COL crisis

People on here often forget that, a minority of the population are struggling to heat their homes and feed their kids.

So yes I can quite believe most people want a big coronation.

Where are you getting this stat from, out of interest?
I know it hasn't hit everywhere yet but

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 24/01/2023 00:10

I'm paraphrasing what I heard someone else say, but the 'Royal' family are nothing but a self perpetuating propaganda machine.

Without them doing shite like this and the press mass reporting every tiny detail of what they are doing, they would be nothing.

They HAVE to churn out these grand gestures - world tours, dignatories visiting, coronations, weddings etc., and the press HAVE to report on it to keep the propaganda machine going to perpetuate the myth that they are important to the country.

When in reality it is absolutely vulgar. A flashy show of wealth and privilege.

harrassedmumto3 · 24/01/2023 00:18

I am wondering if I'll get the day off work. This is all I care about.

Curious too.

It’s strange too that @LottoLaura assumes that a majority of people will support a big coronation because a majority are not struggling with the cost of living. Even if the country had a sovereign wealth fund like Norway’s, or the oil wealth of Saudi Arabia, and I was a billionaire, I’d still abolish the monarchy. They are dated and an embarrassment to the UK.

Florenz · 24/01/2023 00:22

As opposed to our politicians who are renowned the world over for their competence and dignity...

You revealed so much about your character with this post. But not in a good way.

Perhaps you could explain the science behind someone actually starving and not losing weight? Surely if you need 2000 calories to survive and you only take in 500 (aka starving) your body will use up fat?
I think that’s basic science but I’m happy to learn if someone has discovered a new way of harnessing energy.

Nobody is claiming that people in this country are literally starving, just that poverty can cause ill health which may sometimes lead to obesity. This is for complex reasons, there is a wealth of info out there so I suggest you educate yourself first before you show yourself up further here.
