To doubt that a big Coronation is actually what the public wants

It seems as if the press are now saying that people do want a big Coronation ceremony which surprised me - surely with people not being able to afford food and heating it all seems so OTT especially just after the jubilee. Makes me wonder how they got the information that this is what people actually want. I know there'll be the usual flag wavers but surely most people don't want or need money to be wasted on a big celebration?

It will be the only one any of us have ever seen . I want gold coaches the Crown Jewels and Brian May popping up on the balcony.

Tsk tsk

Brian May belongs on the roof

I just think it’s extremely awkward. This isn’t the start of a long and glorious era for Britain. Charles is an old man and his short awkward reign sums up a lot about post-Brexit Britain.

I’m cringing. The funeral got global attention because the end of the Queen’s reign marked the end of an era in which Britain was hugely powerful and respected and world leaders came to acknowledge the past relationship with Britain. Charles’ mini-reign over an impoverished and directionless country won’t be our finest moment. Then William’s era will hopefully be when things are picking up again.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 22/01/2023 21:33

I want a big coronation. I will be watching it and heading up to London before it to feel the atmosphere.

gogohmm · 22/01/2023 21:33

I think there is a happy medium - televised ceremony with 2000 attendees, 90 minutes or so long (half the length of the last one) with processions before and after, wave on the balcony with fly past, reception for a modest number of guests, perhaps this element is paid for by the royal family.

Concert next day is planned then extra day off. I think it's quite balanced

What's your job? Are you anything useful like a plumber or an electrician? Cos I'll pay you to do some jobs while I'm at my street party if that helps?

I think I'm useful, work in a pharmacy. (But I might get arrested if I "do some jobs" on the side )

You do sound a bit like you are, actually. Sorry. 🤷‍♀️

Impressive abilities you’ve got there and why apologise, you’re obviously not sorry just rude.

WinnieTheW0rm · 22/01/2023 21:37

I don't think it'll be a "mini-reign"

There's longevity in the genes on both sides of his family, so I think we could be looking at 22-25 years

Midi reign. Mini was less than two weeks wasn't it

bizzywiththefizzy · 22/01/2023 21:40

I'm not particularly royalist I'm not going to attend a street party (my part of the country doesn't do royal street parties ) . I am interested to watch a Coronation though . I will most likely not see another . So for that reason I will watch and go back to life not really giving a toss about the royals .

JanusTheFirst · 22/01/2023 21:41

Really looking forward to it.

Well, then, to be fair, we're both rude. I'm just less so because I tried to soften it. 😄

I want it - and I want it to be big, and exciting, and meaningful. Most of us (me included) have never experienced one before -it's an historical event, I love the continuity of the monarchy, the connection with the past, but with adaptations to fit the present. I wouldn't wish being a royal on anyone I cared about, I think it's a shit 'job', but I do enjoy the pageantry and ceremony. The cost of it all is something else, but does anyone honestly think that all the money would be diverted to the NHS or social welfare if the coronation was cancelled? Me neither.

This, this this!
Sums up everything I want to say😊

No. You are rude, I am opinionated. The two do not compare.

MarshaMelrose · 22/01/2023 21:44

SerafinasGoose · 22/01/2023 21:28

2022 saw enough of this family's ostentatious pageantry to satisfy even the most ardent monarchists' desires. They were displays the country could ill-afford, having already seen our economy decimated through a protracted lockdown period from which some sectors have still to recover, and others won't at all.

Why in the hell anyone would want to throw more good business after bad to celebrate - of all things! - hereditary privilege, has me beat.

These tedious, uninspiring people are absolutely bloody everywhere. I never participated in a solitary second of it, and am still Windsored out.

Nope, my ardent desire to see more is still burning. 🔥

BeyondMyWits · 22/01/2023 21:45

How about instead of taxpayers paying for it... a fair few of which will be republican, the coronation is paid for by his loyal subjects... have a whip round, a public lottery or whatever it is called. Maybe it could entitle participants to an entry in a draw to attend... how many "ordinary folk" will be inside at the ceremony?

You said the words, not me. If it's not rude to say them about Charles, it can't be rude to say them about you. 🤷‍♀️

One is an opinion about a public figure on a post specifically about them, the other is personal. It would only compare if I were rude about you, which I haven’t been and won’t be. Because I’m not like you.

Livingtothefull · 22/01/2023 21:50

The thing that REALLY sticks in my throat is that the UK is in the middle of a cost of living crisis - for those who aren't suffering from this, congratulations you are in the minority. I & my family are OK though feeling the pressure, but I still manage to care about those many who aren't OK. Evidently the Royals and their supporters don't care, otherwise they would be embarrassed to plan an event like this.

These muppets have also decided to make it a Bank Holiday (no doubt to ensure a good turnout to make them look popular). It is going to damage the economy and waste so much money, hot on the heels of the lavish Jubilee and funeral last year, and just how little do they care.

sunflowersatdawn · 22/01/2023 21:50

They can hardly do it on the cheap. It's not like they have to buy new crowns and stuff. Most of the budget will be for security.

Cheap would be a televised crowning I guess. Lavish is the gold coaches, processions, thousands of guests, concert etc.

You say people wouldn't care about the £1.50 but I think we should be given the choice of the coronation or cash value or let's say 3 Cadbury creme eggs each Wink

Livingtothefull · 22/01/2023 21:55

Bread and circuses are just what we need I suppose.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 22/01/2023 21:55

@sunflowersatdawn three cream eggs is guaranteed anaphylaxis for me, I'll go for the coronation.

Bubblebubblebah · 22/01/2023 21:56

say 3 Cadbury creme eggs each

Have you had them in last few years😔
I am sure if you licked Charles's face it would taste better than that chocolate on them

smileladiesplease · 22/01/2023 21:57

The hospitality industry suffered more than any other during covid lockdowns!!!

Far more than the public sector who are now all striking so yes they need this.

Bread and Circuses is what we get. The circus costs less than the bread.

Just keep an eye out for what the clowns decide to bury on a good news day.

Whoops-a-daisy I forgot to pay my taxes
