To doubt that a big Coronation is actually what the public wants

It seems as if the press are now saying that people do want a big Coronation ceremony which surprised me - surely with people not being able to afford food and heating it all seems so OTT especially just after the jubilee. Makes me wonder how they got the information that this is what people actually want. I know there'll be the usual flag wavers but surely most people don't want or need money to be wasted on a big celebration?

What was it, £100,000,000? I’d rather see that spent on something useful. Like the NHS, or other public services. Not to see some spoilt fanny prance about in his ermines when so many people are struggling. It’s obscene when more and more people are turning to food banks to feed themselves and their families, a massive waste of money. If you want a bit of pomp and circumstance go watch the original coronation.

mynamesnotMa · 22/01/2023 21:59

We had a marvellous street party last time.
If we get time off I'm up for it.
Couldnt give a shit about Royal Family.

Thepeopleversuswork · 22/01/2023 21:59

Not sure I agree. I couldn't care less about it personally but I think people love all that pomp and circumstance.

sunflowersatdawn · 22/01/2023 22:01

I think many recently had street parties for the jubilee - do they want another one already?

I just think it’s extremely awkward. This isn’t the start of a long and glorious era for Britain. Charles is an old man and his short awkward reign sums up a lot about post-Brexit Britain.

I’m cringing. The funeral got global attention because the end of the Queen’s reign marked the end of an era in which Britain was hugely powerful and respected and world leaders came to acknowledge the past relationship with Britain. Charles’ mini-reign over an impoverished and directionless country won’t be our finest moment. Then William’s era will hopefully be when things are picking up again.

This…but I still support it because I’ll get a day off!

Yes

AdventFridgeOfShame · 22/01/2023 22:03

@CoorieInByTheFire yep £100,000,000 otherwise known as 0.29 of a Brexit week saving. Remember that £350,000,000 per fecking week.

Brexit could save us £350,000,000 per week. A coronation would use 2 days worth of that saving.

sobeyondthehills · 22/01/2023 22:05

I would be happy for a massive celebration to say I have seen a coronation and then abolish the monarchy as soon as Charles dies.

Or the day after the coronation, but that seems a tad unfair

Part of me is quite up for abolishing the monarchy, another part realises it would be replaced by Boris the Emperor.

I would love the say the British people are not that stupid, but then I look around

But you know when we are told to drink fewer Starbucks, have fewer takeaways and get rid of netflix to make ends meet... surely the £100,000,000 is of the same order for government... stop spending it on frippery and save it for the important stuff.

Redbushteaforme · 22/01/2023 22:13

After all we have been hearing about them and how they behave, why would we want to spend obscene amounts of money crowning one of them with all their hangers-on in attendance? They are no better (and possibly worse) than the rest of us, and a day of full-on kowtowing with days and days in advance of obsequious toadying is really not a great prospect.

Have a restrained ceremony, a public holiday and let people organise street parties if they want, but that should be the limit of it. And after that, we really need to think about ending the whole charade and moving into the 21st century.

DewinDwl · 22/01/2023 22:13

MargaritaRita · 22/01/2023 21:17

I don't care what they do, because my voice will not be heard if I object (which I do) anyway.

What I don't understand is how Charles and Camilla are not red with embarrassment at having to go through this medieval charade for the peasantry to gawk at. Imagine a grown man and woman wearing all those jewels and ermine cloaks and travelling in a Cinderella coach, and being anointed by a Bishop (the dirty adultering hypocrites 😂) It is all a bit bizarre to me. But they have thick skins and can count their money all day if they want to pass the time.

I refuse to be a sycophant. I am far better than them and that's no lie.

Amen!

A big coronation would be tasteless and tone deaf. Nothing new from the royal family I guess.

Theluggage15 · 22/01/2023 22:15

It’s a coronation ffs. You think it should be some registry office do? The government wastes money every day, no problem with it going on this. And not everyone is struggling anyway.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/01/2023 22:16

Bring it on, big as possible 😊😊 It might be the only one I get to see.

sunflowersatdawn · 22/01/2023 22:18

What is there really to see though? Someone who's already king having a crown put on his head basically.

Yep, on telly, like we can see the previous one.

SequinsandStilettos · 22/01/2023 22:25

Look, I'll be happy enough if I get the 1st and the 8th May off. Might be nosey about Harry's invite or not. But in terms of cost of living, it's misjudged. I thought the same about the Queen's free jubilee book as well.

sunflowersatdawn · 22/01/2023 22:26

God you sound so dull

Whereas I'd be a barrel of laughs if I queued overnight to doff my cap at some bloke being driven past in a gold coach. Okay.

OP posts:
alwaysraining123 · 22/01/2023 22:33

I do.

Celia24 · 22/01/2023 22:41

Agree with everything @SerafinasGoose said. I'm a republican and I think it's a disgraceful spectacle during a cost of living crisis. The monarchy should be over now Elizabeth has died.

People around the world laugh at us for having such an archaic tradition in place. We'll likely book a long weekend far away - mind you I live in Scotland in a city that didn't celebrate the jubilee, I didn't even see bunting during the whole celebration, so there probably won't be much going on anyway.

mynamesnotMa · 22/01/2023 22:42

Just looked at the line up The Three Degrees Leo Sayer oh my days.
Its a bank holiday anyway can't we have a day off.
It's beyond boring looking at an old bloke have a crown put on his head. No disrespect to Camilla bit Jesus neither of them can spout Christisn morals.

And the public wants what the public gets, but I don't get what this society wants ..

Nice one.

Swimmingpoolsally · 22/01/2023 22:45

I think it’s awesome. If there is one thing we brits do well it’s pomp and ceremony. The amount of tourism and global attention this will bring in will be huge. Billions will watch. London will be packed. All hospitality venues, retail outlets over run. And we get a bank holiday.

crack on I say. Fucking right. Do it and do it with style.
