To think nobody truly does this with their cutlery?

I've just seen a post on the "Very British Problems" Facebook page, which says that some people don't use a divider in their cutlery drawer, they just chuck everything in!

This can't be true.

YABU - Cutlery dividers are pointless and a cutlery free for all is the way forward.

YANBU - People who don't use a cutlery divider are disturbed and an intervention is required.

Mines very posh, antique and has the family crest on

OH they tried to offload silver onto me when we married. I said not yet. Thankfully they were burgled I thought at the time. Three months later so were we. So it was doomed either way

RobertaFirmino · 22/01/2023 18:43

I've got a tray but I couldn't give a monkeys about what other people do. Just as long as they call it cut-ler-ee and NOT cuttle-ree!

I fairly recently went to a fancy restaurant (Michelin starred) where they did not have the cutlery laid out on the table (like with the plates and all) but in a drawer in the dining table. the whole meal was spent saying things like 'Does anyone have a soup spoon?' to the other diners. In covid times.

It irritated me. Just give me a place setting. And cutlery dividers. We are not savages. (The restaurant subsequently closed).

Divide all the way here. I used to divide cutlery, but utensils just fended themselves in one big drawer. Bought a big divider and never looked back really; wood, tongs, plastic spatulas, knives...

PIL have several sets of cutlery, all neatly divided by type of utensil BUT they have all the sets mixed together including splitting between a seaside flat and home. The same mixed sets. So they could have two full sets at home and two full sets in the flat, plus some bits... but instead both places have 4 mixed sets plus bits. Digging around for matching items is a bit irritating.

Borderline feral behaviour imo.

Only borderline?

Cleethorpes · 22/01/2023 18:50

Please sit down before you read this...

My cutlery drawer divider, which came with the kitchen, goes front to back rather than left to right. Thus my cutlery has to be teaspoons, forks, knives, big spoons (from front to back) for accessibility. Terrible but you do what you have to do...

NumberTheory · 22/01/2023 18:51

I prefer dividers, but I have had the single drawer approach as a student and it wasn’t awful.

No, they go forks, knives, large spoons and then teaspoons in the compartment which runs along the bottom.

Agree. Once when I was newly married my mother rearranged my cutlery order.

I said nothing. (But subsequently discovered that the plastic inserts are fine in the dishwasher and that cleans off bloodstains rather nicely).

LakieLady · 22/01/2023 18:52

You have separate bra and pants drawers! do you arrange your socks and tights by colour in their drawer?

I don't sort socks and tights by colour, but I have a drawer for white & nude bras, and a drawer for black bras, and two drawers for pants, also nude/white and black.

S72 · 22/01/2023 18:52

My brother (early 30s) doesn't use one. He knows it winds our mum up when she pops round, so he leaves it as a running joke! He has lived near her for a year...waiting for the day mum shows up with one haha

SockGoddess · 22/01/2023 18:53

My exMIL, in her incredibly cluttered house, has a jumbled cutlery drawer with all the cutlery loose in it. To make it even more of a nightmare the drawer is really heavy and sticks, and there’s about 200 forks and 3 knives and spoons. Urgh! So wrong.

Tbf though I do have a jumbled area in my cutlery drawer, next to the divider tray. That’s where all the random things are like bottle openers and the pickled onion stabber.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 22/01/2023 18:55

Forks, knives, big spoons, little spoons.

This is the way.

Bra drawer below teeshirts drawer. Socks etc in a canvas IKEA fabric divider 24 cells in a drawer. Knicker drawer another IKEA fabric divider 24 cells.

Tried it with OH socks but they quickly get muddled up again. SLOB!!

Vitriolinsanity · 22/01/2023 18:58

This is the start of the end of civilisation IMO.

justasking111 · 22/01/2023 19:00

I fold OH nightshirts Marie style every day too 🙈😃

Riverlee · 22/01/2023 19:00

What a sheltered life I have led - I thought everyone had cutlery dividers!

lollipoprainbow · 22/01/2023 19:01

My other half got rid of my cutlery drawer, I was horrified at first but it kinda works !

Tyrozet · 22/01/2023 19:04

Sugargliderwombat · 22/01/2023 18:15

All of you are wrong !!!! Cutlery in a pot on the side. No cutlery drawer at all.

What do you put in the drawer if your cutlery isn't in it?

Do you have an extra crap drawer?

BankOfDave · 22/01/2023 19:05

I’ll take your cutlery draw and up you dishwasher etiquette. I have to line up all the forks, then spoons, then knives etc. in sets.

The method in my madness is I can fit more in and when it’s done can grab all the knives with one hand. Bosh. Drives my DP MAD, I just think it’s efficient! 😂

Simonjt · 22/01/2023 19:06

We don’t use cutlery a great deal, so its just shoved in our general utensil drawer, usually blocked shut my a potato masher.

BeyondMyWits · 22/01/2023 19:07

I have a pot on the side... 2 knives, 2 forks, 2 spoons, and a couple of teaspoons by the kettle.

I am not an advocate of everything out of sight.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 22/01/2023 19:09

Crossed knives?

<blesses self>

m00rfarm · 22/01/2023 19:10

I used to chuck everything in, but I now have large forks, normal forks, large spoons, normal spoons, soup spoons, steak knives, large knives and normal knives. They all look the same. So now I am fanatical about putting them in the right places. I have some of the Joseph cutlery organisers and they have changed my life. I can get loads more into the drawer and it is always tidy.
