To think nobody truly does this with their cutlery?

I've just seen a post on the "Very British Problems" Facebook page, which says that some people don't use a divider in their cutlery drawer, they just chuck everything in!

This can't be true.

YABU - Cutlery dividers are pointless and a cutlery free for all is the way forward.

YANBU - People who don't use a cutlery divider are disturbed and an intervention is required.

And what's worse, they don't put them in knives, forks, spoons order, left to right.

mine start in the middle with the main forks next to the main knives (left and right respectively), then the starter knives, etc. That way, when I lay the table I can pick them up with my left/right hand and don’t have to cross over when laying on the table! I basically set my cutlery draw like it’s a place setting. Shaves at least 2s off laying the table 😂

ChristineCagney11 · 22/01/2023 17:23

I went my entire life without one until I dated someone last year who said "WTF" and bought me one along with a trillion bins.
Can't say it's changed me though as a person...I don't separate the cutlery though they sleep where they wish

PureBlackVoid · 22/01/2023 17:24

I bought adjustable drawer dividers so I could actually customise the spaces, can’t imagine just throwing it all in.

I have my knives forks and spoons in a pot on the bench or an a shelf. It means they don't need sorting and don't sit in bits of food and grub that always seem to accumulate in cutlery drawers. I wash the pot out fairly often. So I suppose I kind of do what you describe but for solid reasons!

Me too! I did this when i moved and was yet to get a tray and couldn't face just leaving them loose in the drawer - and it stuck! So much better and no weird collection of grime that somehow gets in the tray!

Floralnomad · 22/01/2023 17:29

I have a divider , my sister just chucks it all in a drawer - neither are right or wrong .

Tsk

The correct order is (L to R) teaspoons, spoons, forks, knives

Phillistine

No, they go forks, knives, large spoons and then teaspoons in the compartment which runs along the bottom.

Soakitup37 · 22/01/2023 17:33

me, I’m the minority- Chuck it in. I’ve got my cutlery in a drawer too small to get a tray. Not forking out (haha) on some “fancy” dividers.

it’s actually liberating when cleaning up in a hurry! Nobody has suffered as a consequence!

MargaritaRita · 22/01/2023 17:36

I organise the cutlery compartment in the dishwasher FGS! Only one sort in each holder, then when washed, put all the spoons into the spoon part of the cutlery tray in the drawer, followed by.... well you get the drift.

But sometimes I just shove them all in any old way. Menopause the musical.

BiggerBoyMadeMeDoit · 22/01/2023 17:38

Order left to right:

Teaspoons, knives, forks, spoons.

Bunnynames101 · 22/01/2023 17:38

MONSTERS! To live with out a cutlery tray.... Just how...!

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 22/01/2023 17:41

We stayed in an absolutely gorgeous holiday apartment last year, perfect in every way. Except the cutlery was loose in the drawer. There were no dividers but I had to put things in groups and straighten them out before I felt settled in.

AgentProvocateur · 22/01/2023 17:44

I have two dishwasher cutlery holders. I take the full, clean one out and put it in the cupboard. I put the empty one back in the dishwasher and the cycle continues.

swapcicles · 22/01/2023 17:45

I have one stupid tiny drawer in my kitchen so all the other crap has to go in there too, tin openers, peelers, bag clips, you get the gist! All the cutlery is in one small tray though, mixed and messy

^This!

ThinWomansBrain · 22/01/2023 17:51

I can't bear soup spoons mixed up with desert spoons.
sadly don't have enough compartments, so pastry forks have to live with dinner forks.
Correct order is L>R K-F-SS-DS- long misc compartment at the end
Tsp have a horizontal compartment at the bottom.

kimbob100 · 22/01/2023 17:52

YANBU - I am having heart palpitations just thinking about not having a cutlery drawer divider!

RosesAndHellebores · 22/01/2023 17:52

Oh dear when my kitchen was designed the cutlery drawer was made specially: forks, desert forks, dinner knives, steak knives, dessert spoons, soup spoons. The drawer below has fish knives, fish forks, pastry forks, tablespoons, salad servers and coffee spoons. The man measured the cutlery to make sure the space was used as efficiently as possible.

Next to the cutlery drawer is the implement drawer: skewers, egg slice, cake knife, potato masher, whisk, etc.

If you put the cutlery into nominated compartments in the cutlery basket unloading is simple pimple. It is essential to put it in pointing down.

The posh cutlery is still kept in the canteen and has been for 32 years.

Cocolapew · 22/01/2023 17:52

I just throw them in the drawer, much handier.

Our cutlery has thick handles so doesn't fit properly in a divider.

I dislike my undivided drawer. I fantasise of a custom made divider....

AttentionAll · 22/01/2023 17:57

People do it differently. When I was young I did not have a cutlery divider. I also only had 4 of each items so it was not really an issues. Now I have a cutlery divider and have a lot more cutlery.

Spinninggyro · 22/01/2023 17:57

I have used a divider for years but one day last year the dividers need a wash so I just tipped the cutlery baskets from the dishwasher into the drawer. It’s wonderful, I put the sharp knives in the knife block and everything else is just lying in the large drawer and so easy to find. Highly recommend it!

The very first thread I ever posted on on here was
Knives Forks Spoons.

Forks spoons knives
Little spoons.

ShaunaTheSheep · 22/01/2023 18:02

We had cutlery hanging on stands. I got so sick of it I chucked it all in the divider drawer, and DH would hang it all back up again. So I donated it all and bought new.

Oh and it's spoons forks knives in this house.

How can they be easier to find without dividers?
