To think nobody truly does this with their cutlery?

I've just seen a post on the "Very British Problems" Facebook page, which says that some people don't use a divider in their cutlery drawer, they just chuck everything in!

This can't be true.

YABU - Cutlery dividers are pointless and a cutlery free for all is the way forward.

YANBU - People who don't use a cutlery divider are disturbed and an intervention is required.

Oh God. I am close to divorcing DH because he puts forks in the knife section. Grrrr!

PurpleEmpress · 22/01/2023 18:04

Canteen of cutlery, that’s the way to go. All nicely arranged. Only problem is it’s silver and needs cleaning regularly

Advicerequest · 22/01/2023 18:06

I didn't even find out cutlery drawers were a thing till I was a very old adult (40s)
mu my doesn't have a cutlery divider and I have adhd

MuchTooTired · 22/01/2023 18:07

I have ocd and one of my obsessions was having all of my cutlery in the correct order in the liner, with all teaspoons pointing the same way.

I’ve had cbt now, and my cutlery drawer has no liner at all (very small drawer) and they are all chucked in together in one mess - I smile every time I see it and even sometimes congratulate myself quietly in my head for coming so far.

We did this once, it was actually very efficient as you just dumped the entire cutlery holder from the dishwasher in there.

The minimal time taken to fish out what you needed was less than the time saved from sorting it into sections.

I miss my free spirited approach to cutlery now that I'm confined to an insert tray.

Do the sorting when you put the dirty cutlery in the dishwasher, then you can grab from the sections and straight into the right bit of the divider in the drawer.

And it's definitely knife-fork-big spoon with teaspoons across the front.

Advicerequest · 22/01/2023 18:08

Presumably you are all the people who slide the cutlery into the little spaces on the cutlery section of the dishwasher? (I just wham it all in any old how)

I don’t think it’s possible to function without a cutlery tray. I’m astounded there are people out there who live like this!

Our cutlery has thick handles so doesn't fit properly in a divider.

I dislike my undivided drawer. I fantasise of a custom made divider....

You can get adjustable dividers. some cheaper than others, but I got similar to the ones linked. Love it, looks solid and built in, and a lot deeper than regular cutlery trays.

All of you are wrong !!!! Cutlery in a pot on the side. No cutlery drawer at all.

Where does it end though @ortonym?? Before you know it my bras are in my pants drawer and I’ve done an arson!

Namechangeforthis6 · 22/01/2023 18:21

It also has to be

knives | forks | spoons

You have separate bra and pants drawers! do you arrange your socks and tights by colour in their drawer?

Even aged 21 choosing cutlery wedding present I went for Oneida Mozart. I knew then I was too lazy to polish silver 😃

Exactly this.

It takes little effort once you’ve decided the order of placing cutlery in the dishwasher rack.

Couldn't deal with rifling through to find what I needed when I could immediately find it in an ordered tray.

Mines very posh, antique and has the family crest on

Tsk

The correct order is (L to R) teaspoons, spoons, forks, knives

Phillistine

But where are your coffee spoons, grapefruit spoons, soup spoons, fruit spoons and so on, I could use a cutlery tray with many secions just for spoons!

justasking111 · 22/01/2023 18:26

I actually Enjoy filling the canteen of cutlery. I bought two more boxes over the years because we inherited stuff. I'm OCD about the mug cupboard too 🙈

Stomacharmeleon · 22/01/2023 17:10

They never stay in their compartments so perhaps it's the way forward...

Mine do.

You shouldn't have cutlery if you aren't prepared to train it properly.

It isn't hard - 5 minutes a day, make it fun, and give them plenty of treats. Forks especially are really good at picking stuff up!

JudgeJ · 22/01/2023 18:28

Howtonamechange · 22/01/2023 17:19

My mil does this.

I can't stand it. I tided it once and it was messy again the next time I went.

Drives me bonkers.

What gives you the right to reorganise someone else's drawers? Would you accept this from your MIL, reorganising your kitchen to her taste?

Yes! Cake forks, fish knives and forks. Cupboards to hold all your different wine glasses, mustn’t mix up the ones used for white and those for red wine, champagne glasses, sherry glasses. The list goes on and on

Lots of empty cutlery boxes on eBay.

Wine glasses, yep keep those together too

Interestingly, and believe me I have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing all the options, the socks are arranged in a seasonal rotation system and the tights have their own area but not a drawer per se. But now you’ve got me thinking they need their own drawer…

KindergartenKop · 22/01/2023 18:38

We have a separate section for SOUP SPOONS.

Phos · 22/01/2023 18:38

We don't have one because our cutlery drawer is silly and narrow and we can't fit one in.
