Dad was a big Nat King Cole fan. Mum chose "Autumn Leaves' & I chose 'Smile' to be played at his funeral. The former at the start and the latter as everyone was leaving. I only need to hear the strings at the start of Autumn Leaves & I start tearing up - and he died over 20 years ago!

Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran. Only first heard this song just after my Mum died, it caused proper sobbing from me 😭 also Those Were The Days Of Our Lives by Queen. My Mum wanted that played at her funeral so I can't listen to that now without tearing up.

Illegally18 · 22/01/2023 17:52

I heard 'dance with my father' for the first time 5 years ago while queueing up at a supermarket till, I broke down and had to sit down.
But the one that really breaks me up is'you have been loved' by George Michael. That voice, and it makes me think of my dead brother

Wires by Athlete - my boy was a teeny little preemie.
He’s a perfect 8 year old now, but it still
gets to me.

Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. It reminds me of a university boyfriend who died a few years ago. We'd had no contact since uni but when I heard he'd died far too young and all alone, it just broke me.

OoooohMatron · 22/01/2023 19:03

Great thread, I’ll get the tissues! 😭

Look Mummy No Hands - Camille O’Sullivan version (I first heard this live and was in floods) Song from a daughter to a mother at different life stages “I used to dismiss you, now I just miss you”
m.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu-6PSindzA

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack (makes me think of the first few hours with my newborn children)
m.youtube.com/watch?v=VqW-eO3jTVU

Slipping Through My Fingers - Abba (though I actually prefer the Mamma Mia version): m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe2m1wxb5_w

ElfineHawkMonitor · 23/01/2023 22:16

Also Dolly Parton The Story - makes me think of my mum who lost my dad in an accident 20 years ago, he was the love of her life, they’d been together since they were 16.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=zi_XPQ4tq40

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true, I was made for you

Yesiamtiredactually · 24/01/2023 16:15

Wild horses by The sundays
Full of Grace by Sarah Mclaughlan
Africa by Toto.. that one is because one of my very closest friends and I used to send each other the lyrics to Africa as a text message for reasons I can no longer remember and sadly he is no longer with us and so I can’t ask him. Still can’t make it through the first verse without having to turn it off as it just gets me 😢
