I've only listened to Slipping Through My Fingers once. Decided that was something I didn't need to live through again!
Just listened to the Tim Minchin one. Jeez. That touched me. I currently have a whole raft of songs, mainly by The Jam that I can't listen to, having lost my brother.

notforonesecond · 22/01/2023 11:40

Ronan - Taylor Swift knocks me out at the first mention of plastic dinosaurs but the “what if I kept the hand me downs you won’t grow into” line makes me ugly cry every time.

holierthanthou73 · 22/01/2023 11:42

Just the way you are - Barry White
I have always been a PITA but my mum used to say I love you just the way you are 😥

Giveaschitt · 22/01/2023 11:46

Gary Barlow - let me go.
The Tim Minchin one mentioned earlier gets me too - just thinking about it is choking me up!

Starmaker - Kids from Fame
Wires - Athlete
A Million Dreams - Pink
Away in a Manger
Forever Autumn - Justin Hayward
Fields of Gold - Sting
Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head -BJ Thomas
Puff the Magic Dragon

All remind me of people I have lost or the passage of time.

At my daughter's funeral last year we had "The Sound of Silence" sung by Disturbed. It is very bleak, but stunning. When we got her phone back from the police the last song she had listened to before she took her own life was "The Doctor Said" by Chloe Adams. I have only managed to listen to it once...

I'm so sorry for the devastating loss of your beautiful daughter x

Letter to a John
Ani DiFranco

Trigger warning

"I was eleven years old,
He was as old as my dad.
And he took something from me
I didn't even know that I had"

I can't even think about this lyric without crying

autienotnaughty · 22/01/2023 14:40

Wind beneath my wings
Because you loved me
Love is all around (played at a funeral)

stealersmealdeal · 22/01/2023 14:56

I'm not generally a big musical fan, but went to see Everyone's Talking About Jamie. Knew nothing about the song He's My Boy - but my god, hearing it for the very first time, I was struggling to suppress massive shoulder-shaking sobs, in the quiet theatre.

I have a Pavlov response to the opening bars of Jealous of the Angels, by Donna Taggart. Instant tears.

TheNoodlesIncident · 22/01/2023 15:52

Ooh yes, agree about Sufijan. All The Trees Of The Field Will Clap Their Hands really gets me too.

His Christmas albums have some sublime treasures. Some his best stuff is his Christmas music.

A song I hadn’t heard before last night while watching Queens of Country. Dolly Parton sang A Coat of Many colours. She had written it about her childhood where her mother had made her a coat out of so many rags of all colours, hence the name. They were incredibly poor, she wore it to school the next day and the children laughed and made fun of her. She tried to tell them that she was proud of the coat because her momma had made it but she said they just didn’t get it. I must admit I did have a little cry. It really touched my heart.
The other song is Fix You by Cold Play. We had played it at my mother’s funeral. She was absolutely riddled with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and she was crippled with it. We couldn’t fix her and she was such a lovely person, never moody. I used to call her my little sunny mumma.
she’s been gone 17 years and I still can’t hear that song without it bringing on the tears.

Seasons in the sun by Terry Jacks

Chocolatefrenzy · 22/01/2023 16:41

Bright eyes by Art Garfunkle...... cry, every time I hear it

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 22/01/2023 16:45

Del Amitri - nothing ever happens.

Takes me back very viscerally to early covid days, just after I dropped the kids at my (rather recently) ex's and was driving completely empty roads to my empty home with no plans and nothing to do and nobody to see. I was so broken by that.

notawittyname1954 · 22/01/2023 16:50

Out here on my own Irene Cara

OoooohMatron · 22/01/2023 16:51

Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross has me wailing. I wouldn't mind but my dad's still alive!

LadyLolaRuben · 22/01/2023 17:00
