I do a bit like even today I’m thinking right what shall we do today and it’s so cold

It's the endless dark that gets me down. Sunrise was at 8.28am today and because it's cloudy means it'll be pretty much dark at 4ish.

Vinylloving · 21/01/2023 15:44

Over the years I have found it easier to realign my expectations of winter so as not to be so disappointed and low, so I'm half expecting bugs and nasty colds- if they happen focus on sleep, rest, nourishing food and drinks, think hibernation mode (obvs excepting work and school runs etc that can't be avoided!) But at all free time just take care, be slow, try and appreciate small simple things where possible. See it as a natural time to socialize less and stay at home. I appreciate that all sounds twee and not possible for everyone, but I used to dwell on all the lost opportunities and compare it to long summer evenings and what I'm missing, but that made it harder to bear

SpentDandelion · 21/01/2023 15:47

No, and l walk to work at 5.40am most mornings.
I just make the best of it, eat nice food, have hot baths, read, plan my garden order plants online. I still go outdoors for a nice walk most days. Spring is only round the corner. Winter is an opportunity to rest, just like nature does.

Muffinmctuffin · 21/01/2023 15:49

I love it!

Muffinmctuffin · 21/01/2023 15:50

Was still typing and it posted.

I love it, Sept to Feb is my favourite time. I hate March to July, find it so dull.

BotterMon · 21/01/2023 15:53

Days like today are lovely when it's sunny and dry and no work. Most of winter is struggling to do horses before work in the dark, struggling with frozen hoses or endless mud, lugging buckets of water to stables from house, a horrible commute, doing 10 hours in the office then rinse, repeat in the evenings. Finding the energy and motivation to ride. Walking the dog in the dark am and pm. Trying to get warm again. Hate the heat too - up to mid 20's fine but anything over that and I'm as lethargic as anything.
Not long until the clocks change. Wish we were on European time with longer evenings in both winter and summer.

charabang · 21/01/2023 15:54

I hate going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Especially as my office has very little natural light. I live for my one day a week working from home when I can sit by my patio doors and watch the garden birds. I'm a gardener so judge the year by flowers blooming. After Christmas I am eagerly anticipating the snowdrops, then the daffs, then the bluebells...can't wait!

From mid October I long for mid March.

From mid March I long for mid October.

Seriously...

Ohgoodyanotherone · 21/01/2023 15:56

Yes. I hate everything about it. The cold, the dark mornings/evenings and don't get me started on the snow. Bring on the long hot summer days.

chocolateismyjam · 21/01/2023 15:56

Love this, very good way of looking at things

SirenSays · 21/01/2023 16:03

Hate everything about it!

MeinKraft · 21/01/2023 16:07

Autumn and spring are my favourite seasons. I particularly love Easter time. January and February are pretty shit really. It's cold, dark and wet. If it were just me I'd love the whole cuddle up with a book thing but I have two young children who thrive on time spent outdoors and they're just not getting it right now.

Ihavedogs · 21/01/2023 16:08

I don’t mind the cold (notwithstanding the extortionate cost of fuel that we now have), but I am not so keen on the days that are dark, wet and windy. I am less keen on the days when the pavements are so icy that it is dangerous for older folks to be able to get out, or the winter bugs that can be lethal for some.

The last few days with blue skies and sunshine have been fabulous despite the cold. The nights are already starting to draw out, so we have got through the bulk of winter even if we may have further cold snaps, snow etc.

I can’t tolerate the heat and my skin is reactive to the sun, so if it had to be winter or summer, winter would win every time.

LadyEloise1 · 21/01/2023 16:18

Yes. I do find winter difficult.
I'd love a holiday bolthole in the winter sun. Not too far away so it would have to be the Canaries.

Summerhouse2013 · 21/01/2023 16:22

My husband works full time and finds this time of the year hard, he always feels quite low...reasons are he leaves at 6am in the dark and has a 45 minute journey to work, then when he leaves work it's also dark. Think the work week just feels dark for him, whereas he loves the summer.

Roselilly36 · 21/01/2023 16:26

Yes, I always find this time of year a challenge, we are counting down the days, until March.

I used to. I realised on mat leave that I was trying to lead my 'summer' life all year round and that was the cause of my unhappiness.

Since then I have tried to lead a seasonal life enjoying things in their season. This includes food, activities, books, etc. I try to follow more traditional 'rhythms' of the year. My life looks quite different in each season.

This month I have enjoyed these new things for myself: a chicken barley recipe by Nigella, Old Tom Rhubarb gin, reading The Cold People by Tom Rob Smith, 'dressing' the dining room table for January/Burns' with some new candle holders, finding a new local walk with the dog, etc.

I use Almanac type books to inspire me each month.

I hate winter but I just love everything about this.

Choconut · 21/01/2023 17:35

Once I have no kids in school I want to go to Mexico or Thailand for a couple of weeks late Jan/early Feb every year to get me through winter.

excelledyourself · 21/01/2023 17:51

Nope. I can be the hermit I was born to be, without much justification.

WaxOnBoreOff · 21/01/2023 17:53

I’m finding this winter particularly hard.
I have absolutely no energy or motivation for anything, work is a slog, the dark mornings are so hard.

Sonicetositdown · 21/01/2023 18:04

stopringingme · 21/01/2023 11:28

I hate the dark mornings and it gets so dark so early, roll on spring.

Can't wait for it to get warmer to get a decent amount of washing dry outside.

Oh this. Washing drying outside!
I miss summer so much.
Flowers and lovely warm mornings, being able to go places with the kids and not worrying about one of them falling in mud 30s after leaving the car (which happened last Sunday).
No cold wind in your face as you walk. Numb hands, cracked skin, no thanks.

ScoobyBooby · 21/01/2023 18:05

I’m hating it now and longing for those late spring summer nights.

doitwithlove · 21/01/2023 18:10

Dislike the winter, dark, cold and dankness.

Happy to see leaving work an hour ago, it was lighter. Gives me a glimmer of hope 👍🏻

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2023 18:11

No, I love it, I find the summer hard though.

MagpiePi · 21/01/2023 18:16

I hate the cold grey, damp, gloomy days. Yes, it’s nice when it’s sunny and crisp but those days are few and far between, and it’s still fucking freezing and dark at 4:30pm.
A friend living on the Gold Coast in Australia had to put a jumper on the other day because she was feeling chilly. It was 25 degrees.
😢
