To think the Rishi seatbelt nonsense is just tedious?

Not a Tory voter, never have been.

But seriously all this over the fact he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt? Anyone would think he’d been exposed as a sex offender or a user of Class A drugs 🙄

It’s one of those ‘crimes’ that is so incredibly minor that virtually everyone has done it in the past couple of months

Eh ?
Speak for yourself.
I haven't.
No-one I've been in a car with has.

But as has been pointed out - he wasn't just reaching for something or any of the other reasons you've suggested, he was purposefully making a video.

If you are stupid enough to film and publicise yourself breaking a law, then it isn't unreasonable that you then get charged with breaking that law.

Iam4eels · 21/01/2023 00:02

These are the exemptions to the seat belt law. Travelling under protection isn't one of them

You can probably expect it to be sneakily added sometime soon...

Scurryfunge12 · 21/01/2023 00:03

The longer we keep excusing shitty behaviour from the powers that be, the longer they will treat the public with the contempt that they do and think it’s okay because the public by and large stupid enough to keep them in power regardless. Have a word with yourself.

LoveBluey · 21/01/2023 00:03

I doubt very much he unbuckled just for a moment to film it, I think it's more likely he doesn't ever wear it when being driven around under protection. Would seem strange to think I'm about to be filmed, let's take off the seatbelt. More likely it just didn't even occur to him to put it on as he's not in the habit of doing so.

Iam4eels · 21/01/2023 00:04

I've never done it, everyone I know never does it, and pretty much everyone I travel with has a car that will start beeping at you if the seatbelts aren't fastened and should be.

havemybreakfastthen · 21/01/2023 00:12

I wear my seatbelt every time and insist my passengers do too.

Some people don't care - however to blame it on being a Tory is just ridiculous.
Whipped up frenzy by the left perhaps? Sounds familiar....

ChungusBoi · 21/01/2023 00:14

There’s something contrived about this. The news story is a distraction from the utter shitshow that the UK has descended into due to a decade of Tory corruption and mismanagement.

To see to a small child in the back, because the driver pulls away before you’ve had the chance to do it up, to reach for something on the back seat, sometimes I do so I can inject my stomach on a long trip if I need to (diabetic)

Oh.
Was Sunak doing any of these things, or similar?

DelphiniumBlue · 21/01/2023 00:19

I don't care at all. But if we expect everyone in public office never to have committed even a minor infraction, there'll be no one left to run the place.
Let those without sin be the first to cast stones etc.
Boris throwing parties in lockdown while people were dying alone is one thing, being a passenger in a car without a seatbelt for short amount of time is different. I'm annoyed at the waste of police time in investigating this trivia while people are being mugged and worse on our city streets with no visible police presence at all.

Stable doors and horses spring to mind.

people will pick up on anything to tear down whoever is in power.

Iam4eels · 21/01/2023 00:32

being a passenger in a car without a seatbelt for short amount of time is different

But literally two months ago the Conservatives said on record that not wearing a seatbelt is a serious matter and that they are looking at introducing harsher penalties for people who don't. They didn't say that it's okay if it's only for a short amount of time, by the governments own figures not wearing a seltbeat was the cause of 30% of collision fatalities in 2021. How many of those people do you think thought it was fine because "its just for a minute" or "it's just a quick trip"?

About 20 years ago now, my cousin popped his seatbelt off to someone in the backseat. They were rearended by another vehicle and crashed. He died. His facial and cranial injuries from going through the windshield and then hitting the road were so severe that he had to be identified using his tattoos and birth marks. It was only for a second but it only takes a second.

I was in a serious car accident at 70mph, hit by other vehicle like my cousin. I was wearing a seatbelt and survived, as did the other three people in the car.

Yeah but it means there'll be an exception in place for when it happens again.

Not to never have committed one, but certainly not to do so while in office!

Return2thebasic · 21/01/2023 00:36

It's a symbol, isn't it? He's frequently showing himself as so detached to ordinary people and oridnary life. This "sans seatbelt" incident just reinforced that image, in my own view. He has something in his mind makes him think he's not ordinary people. At least, this is my view.

Yep, that’s right, so that they can carry on going around doing as they please, and this time without consequence. Why bother with laws at all, they just change what doesn’t suit them.

grumpycow1 · 21/01/2023 00:45

The tories increased the fine for not wearing one and then he records a video in a moving vehicle not wearing one - pretty tone deaf. I’m glad he got fined but it’s nothing to him, small change.

I think it’s wrong because a lot of people will see it and subconsciously think it’s not that important to wear one. It is! And I’ve never been in a car where someone didn’t wear one either.

WalkthisWayUK · 21/01/2023 00:45

Public Health has a hard enough job as it is! And Public Health is a public body, government funded and directed.

Things like road safety are literally their jobs to uphold, fund and manage.

TBF when the doofus films himself doing it and puts it on social media, it probably didn’t take them too much investigation 😀

Happened very near us yesterday. Male driver pretty much ok, female passenger severe head injuries and may lose a leg, had to be cut out of the car and airlifted to hospital.

Emergency teams (multiple ambulances, fire engines, collision investigators, an air ambulance, and many, many police) arrived really quickly, but it took a long while before the two occupants were taken away and the wreckage was only removed five hours later.

The cause of the accident isn't yet clear but one senior police told me he didn't think it was a matter of speeding. The reason the female passenger's injuries were so severe was that she wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

I always have worn my seatbelt as it's been drummed into me and after what I saw and heard yesterday I can assure you I will always, always wear my seatbelt going forward, irrespective of how minor or tedious or whatever else it may be deemed by others.

Those are the pictures published by the relevant fire and rescue service yesterday.

@Cuppasoupmonster
